The smoked turkey was very audacious. Mostly because we used such a big bird.
Everyplace I looked for information on smoking then roasting to finish a turkey stated that it should not be done with a bird over 15 pounds. Ours was 25.
My husband went with hickory, I understand now why people tend to use apple wood and a sweeter rub rather than a savory. I still prefer spicy savory.
I think he smoked it a little hot because we were worried about temp. Temperature was not an issue so next time I think we can lower the temperature a little bit.
Anyway, it turned out well but did not pair well with my daughter's ham because there was no balance. That part is kind of sad.
The adventure started at 6:30 this morning.
Some say it can't be done but we shall see.
Smoking/roasting a 25 pound turkey.
Edit update: It worked.
Yesterday I showed the grandkid how to puree pumpkin with a food mill.
She had fun turning the crank until her arm got tired and I could finish it up.

I'm happy you're teaching her so much. You'd be surprised how many kids and young adults lack basic skills.
Just finished my weekly shopping trip.
I am beat on my feet so I will sit on my butt.
My last Thanksgiving in Oregon, in 2006, was epically bad.
Ever since then, every year we celebrate survival and family.
No matter how hard our year is, or how little we have.
This year I am really blown away because I didn't realize how strong what I built is.
It is small but I hope it will be enduring.
Every year since my granddaughter was born me and my daughter have collaborated on Thanksgiving.
This year my contribution is going to be a collaboration between me and my husband.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
Scrolling through movies on YouTube. Little kid sees a creepy clown and starts laughing her ass off.
Wants to watch the clown. Poltergeist 2015. Never knew it existed, so I swallow my loathing of remakes and we start watching.Really quickly I saw that it was bullshit but we kept watching because she is 4 and doesn't know the movie is bad.
Her mom get here to pick her up right after the scene with the tv.
I finished it anyway and yeah, it sucked.
Over the weekend my granddaughter's minnow died, leaving her Betta friendless.
So yesterday we went back to Pet Smart where she selected another Betta and a frog.
Her grandpa selected a third Betta for her tank because he liked the color.
All the fish are female.
She just loves talking to them.
Survived the birthday party. It was tense at first but we got through cake and presents.
I was getting ready to see my way out, when the chaos walked in, with more presents.
From there a rather drab party became quite animated and I ended up staying longer than planned.
Grandpa of the birthday child walked in and announced his pleasure at the recent election. Daughter in law told him not to talk politics; she wanted to leave the country but it is harder than she thought. Grandpa ignored her and then told her to shut up.Then we all just had a lovely conversation for about an hour while angry people stormed out and then back into the house.
No blood was shed, no police called, no one barred from the family for "voting wrong".
It is how I hope Thanksgivings and Christmas's will go.
Oh, to be 4 years old with a desire to wash windows at 8am.
Yesterday I received an invitation to a birthday party for a child.
The history is long, I won't go into it. My granddaughter has been friends with these kids since she was born. The family is in chaos and the chaos spilled over into my family. I haven't addressed it with them and I am not looking forward to Saturday.
I am not.
But I will go because it is not about me or them, it is about the kids and the community.
I will not bring chaos with me. I will make every attempt to be stoic.
I always wondered what my dogs would do if someone they didn't know well, or at all, tried to enter my house. Now I know.My daughter's boyfriend came alone to pick up the grandkid today and they would not let him inside. He actually feared getting bitten.
My Cricket has bitten me 3 times. I know he will bite.
Don't let his name fool you; he is a big boy. I named him Cricket because as a pup he hunted crickets.
According to my son(an employee of Aldi)picking the losing horse in a race gives people carte blanche to treat retail employees like shit.

I feel stress sometimes but I do not focus on it. It is poison and it always makes my life harder than it has to be. Instead I focus on the path.
I am a little tired. Hopefully grandkid lets me nap a little today.
I watch politics, not sports, so last night was my super bowl. I only stuck around for the final score. It was an entertaining match.
People think it's hard to use fresh ingredients.
I poached a chicken breast and used the broth to make chicken cream gravy for a casserole.
Yes it takes more time than opening a can but it is healthier and delicious.
Friday I made chicken broth for the grandkid.
I use a whole chicken so I had chicken left after. Saved the carrots and the meat.
This morning I made chicken salad for husband's lunch.
I seem to have caught the little kid's cold so I decided to make dinner easy.
Leftover chicken salad and carrots into a chicken a la king; no effort.
Now I just need to get through the worst of this damn cold.
Nausea and maybe a fever then it is done.
Last night we spent hours watching old Mtv videos on YouTube.
It is crazy when you consider how positively cringe today is compared to the 80's.
Little kid fever went down so we decided to do trunk or treat at the local Methodist church and then look at fire trucks next door.
She was still feisty so we did a neighborhood trick or treat after. This year's Halloween night costume was Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtle Raphael and she was a hit, a real super star.
The route was about 2 miles and she covered it like a champ but when we got home her fever was back up.
Today is a total do nothing and rest day, though she has no idea how to do that.
Candy except suckers is shelved until later and hopefully she will feel better in time for her mom to come and get her on Sunday.
