I am reminded of one of my old pharmacy stories.

We had this lady customer who was a giant freak about her diabetes. She claimed to test 8 to 12 times A DAY, which is A LOT. Well, this one time her blood glucose monitor device somehow got left in her car and her son took the car and wouldn't be back for like 8 hours and she was FREAKING out.

I asked her if she could reach her son on his cell phone and she said no. I asked her if she was familiar enough with her own body to know if her blood sugar might be "off". Well, I tried to settle her down for like 20 minutes, but nothing I said derailed her from her one thought: I need to get a new blood glucose monitor NOW. Despite my many attempts to reassure her about not testing for 8 hours for one day should be okay if she's careful about her food and water intakes, etc, she still demanded a new monitor. HOWEVER, she OF COURSE did not want to have to PAY for it. I could see she was clearly distressed and went about doing everything in my power to get that monitor for her. I had to convince the doctor to write a new prescription for a new monitor despite the fact that she already owned a perfectly good one. I had to get special authorizations to get it covered by her insurance, but, hey, three hours of my time later, I'll be damned if I didn't get her a shiny new monitor. I called her to let her know she was good to go at a cheap 10 USD insurance copay, but she didn't answer so I left a message.

If you're wondering whether or not this lady thanked me nicely for doing all of this rigmarole for her, the answer is no. And this, my friends, is because: SHE NEVER CAME TO THE STORE TO PICK IT UP. Yes, after bitching and moaning about "oh my sugars!" and "oh I'm going to wind up in the emergency room!" etc and three hours of horrifying leg work on my part to accommodate what I assumed was a person in need, turns out she was just fine after all. I held onto that monitor for at least 10 days and she never came in. She didn't even called to say "nevermind."

And THAT was the day I became riddled with cynicism.
