Untitled story 1 (chapter 1)

This is a story I am thinking of having published on day, but I want to see what people think of it so far. Likely my layout and characters will change as I rewrite it, but as I have it now, I hope you like it.

chapter 1:

In a hospital room, there sat a woman in a bed. There was a man next to her and a small baby in her arms. The baby was calm, motionless. The mother, having been previously nervous, was now serene due to a new understanding.

"Elven babies do not misbehave.I wasn't quite sure that a half-elf would react the same as a full-blooded, but it would seems so." The speaker was the woman's husband, Burlar Klinsworth, a full-blooded elf.

"That's understandable, I guess." Elfriede Klinsworth said, watching her almost motionless husband as he watched the baby.

Burlar laughed. "You're getting used to my ways. Is that a good thing?" He laughed more heartily. "She really is quite beautiful."

Elfriede noticed his mouth twitch, but he remained calm, no sign of the distress she expected to see. Elfriede knew what he was thinking. Burlar had already expressed his opinions on wanting a son. All elves wanted boys to pass their names onto. It was only during Elfriede's fifth month of pregnancy that the doctors told her it would be her last. If she were to try to have any more children, she could die.

A nurse walked into the room, staring at the man in front of her. Burlar was gorgeous. His hair was long and black, his blue eyes looking straight past the nurse as she was staring at his body, which anyone who looked at him could tell he was not quite human. "Sorry if I am interrupting anything..." she said, stopping short, looking at the two to go on. "I was, uh, wondering if you had chosen a name for a child."

Burlar nodded, his wife looking surprised, yet not. She had known for a long time that it was traditional for Elven father's to chose the name for the child. Burlar spoke clearly, vocalizing the name with such clarity and tones that just seemed magical. "Loana Portia Klinsworth."

The nurse nodded and wrote down the name. She walked out, taking one last look at Elfriede's husband. Elfriede had to wonder if he had really even noticed the nurse at all, because for sure she had noticed him and his good looks.

"Loana." Elfriede said the name, testing it out. The name really was quite beautiful and Elfriede had to wonder how he could come up with a name like that off the top of his head. Not once had they discussed a name.

"It was my great-grandmother's name." Burlar responded, as though he could read her mind, although she wasn't quite sure he couldn't. He walked over by the little child and places a hand on her head. "My daughter."

As soon as he had said that, he looked down and if Elfriede hadn't known better, she could almost see the tears in his eyes, but elves didn't cry, at least not in front of others if at all. As she watched him, he began to walk around the room, his hand went up to his neck, slightly touching the red stone on his necklace, which had been passed down generation to generation, to the first son in each Elven family.

Loana made little noises as she began to fall asleep in her mother's arms.

"Burlar" Elfriede said quietly. He looked into her eyes, slightly, his brows raised questioningly. She smiled discreetly, without moving the sleeping baby. He walked over and took her hand as he smiled slightly, matching his wife's happy gaze.

"I am so happy honey." Burlar said to his wife.

"Oh!" He turned slightly to where Elfriede had noticed a man in the doorway. He had long brownish hair and a slightly dark complexion, much like her husband's. His face was contorted in disgust. The man walked into the room taking long, perfect strides, stopping about five feet from her husband. Burlar glared at him, slightly and she caught a slight exchange between their eyes. Burlar took a step forward and Elfriede noticed the man take a step back in turn.

Burlar grinned slightly and stood still. "Hello Hershal." He held out a hand, but Hershal stood motionless. The two continued to glare at each other.

"Burlar." He said, pulling the name through gritted teeth. He pulled out a scroll, sealed with a stamp, the same looking red as the necklace worn around Burlar's neck. He held out the scroll without moving forward. Burlar took it. He swiftly broke open the seal and opened the scroll.

"Burlar, you are hereby informed by this letter scripted by the Yurishi elders, that your human wife is not allowed in the village of Yurishi. If she breaks this law it will ultimately result in her death." Burlar stopped reading and glared at the man. "Hershal, how could you do this? I have no doubt you were placed in the council after our father's death, but how the HELL did you agree to this?"

"That would have been your spot on the council had you stayed." Hershal crossed his arms. "Besides, it wasn't my final decision on the matter, but I wasn't against the council's decision either."

"Go away." Burlar growled fiercely. "I have no brother."

"Hm, that's the same thing I said when I found out about her . Guess it's pretty much mutual then." Hershal grinned. "Good thing I don't because I'm guessing that child in her arms would have been my niece and there is no way I would have a half-human niece." He spit on the floor and turned. "Good thing I don't have a brother."

Burlar glared at his brother with disgust. "Yes, good thing. You do realize I can't allow you to go back now. You'd be the perfect messenger to tell them of this news." He looked over at his daughter and wife. "I will not allow you to ruin the happiness I have found."

"Oh, no worries there. There is no way I'd mention such a thing. A halfling !" Hershal shivered. "I can't believe my own brother would do such a thing. Of course, after you married that human..."

"I have a name!" Elfriede said, her anger getting the best of her. She was more than slightly annoyed with this man, her own husband's brother and how he was treating her and her husband. "And I am more than just a human."

He looked at her with raised brows, crossing his arms, an impatient and annoyed look on his face.

"I am a wife, and a mother. I am someone who loves and cares. My name is Elfriede."

"Hm, I will make sure to forget that." Hershal said as he turned to leave the room.

"The nerve of him!" Elfriede glared behind her husband at the door the elf had just walked through. "I can't believe he is related to you! His attitude... he's a perfect jerk!"

"I can believe. That is how some elves are." Burlar looked down and didn't say anything more. He was looking out the door his brother had just gone through. The image wouldn't leave Elfriede's mind, because if she didn't know better, he almost looked regretful.

A couple of weeks later, while the couple was sitting at home and the baby was sleeping in the bassinet in their bedroom, Elfriede heard a thump on the door. She went to look. A pamphlet lay on the doorstep. Unlike the scroll that Burlar had received from his clan, this pamphlet was yellowish and had a cheap look. The words though, were even worse.

What are the creatures doing to us humans?

It seems that elves, goblins, verixens, have become close to us humans. Without our consent they have moved in among us and have begun to take over our establishments. Just the other day I noticed a human and an elf walking amongst one another like it was nothing. Such am enchanting creature, the human must have been under some sort of spell.

WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

Not only is this an outrage, but this is making many of us angry. We shall make sure this is stopped. Take a stand, make a call, and get those creatures out!

"What a disgraceful messege!" Elfriede said as she crumpled the pamphlet up. She threw it in the trash and walked away.

Two days later a scream was heard in the streets. A few more were heard in different parts of he city. Elfriede ran out, and Burlar came out behind her. In front of them were some people in red coats that had their faces covered. In the middle of them stood a young male goblin. He was all bloody and the blood was running down the swords of those in the red coats.

"Burlar, inside!" Elfriede said quietly, and with much haste, she forced him back in. There was much terror all day, many many individuals being killed. The Nachtgruppen, as they were calling themselves, were making themselves well known. The red coats were revealing of what they were doing. A symbol of all the blood.

In a few short days the Nachtgruppen had gotten their words across and all the magical creatures left. All except for Burlar. And only because he felt the need to stay with his wife and daughter. And soon a law was passed. A law forbidding all magical creatures from Chikan.
