That she was not herself of imperial descent, not bornto the purple (porphyrogenita), but a niece of the man who hadtaken over the throne in a coup (John Tzimiskes), was a source ofdisappointment to some when she married the son of Otto I. ButTheophanu had been educated to play a role in an imperial court. She was personally impressive and intelligent and she participatedin her husband’s government, traveling with him — the court hadno fixed center — even on military campaigns.(1) They had fivechildren, of whom four survived: Otto III, Adelaide (abbess ofQuedlinburg), Sophia (abbess of Gandersheim), and Matilda (whomarried the count palatine Ezzo). When Otto II died in December983, Theophanu served as regent for their son, Otto III, at firstsharing the regency with her mother-in-law, empress Adelaide, buteventually taking over on her own. Through the regency, she wasformally associated with her son in his documents and actions, andforeign rulers negotiated with her. She is called imperatrix orimperator in official documents. Though she had differences withher mother-in-law, empress Adelaide, some of them inherited fromher husband,(2) the two worked together to secure the throne forOtto III from his cousin, Henry II of Bavaria (“the Wrangler”), whohad proclaimed himself king. Theophanu died in 991, still in her30’s.Biographical notes: (1) According to Karl Leyser, Theophanu intervened 76 timesduring the lifetime of her husband, often making grants that sheinitiated, Communications and Power in Medieval Europe, TheCarolingian and Ottonian Centuries, ed. DE NUGIS CURIALIUM on Meridiane and Gerbert by Walter NAAAAAAP this is kinda most of most jevel i found by this day

19:25 Jun 03 2021
Times Read: 153

One day Gerbert left the city at noon as if for a
walk — all the while grievously tormented by hunger
— and, with all his thoughts far away, strolled deep
into a grove. There, in the very heart of the forest,
he found a woman of wondrous beauty, sitting upon
a great cloth of silk with a huge heap of money
before her. He tried to slink away undetected,
for he feared a phantom or a trick. But, calling
him by name, she bade him trust her, and, with the
appearance of pity, promised him the present sum,
and as large a store of wealth as his heart could
desire, if he would only disdain the mayor’s daughter
who had spurned so haughtily his suit, and would
attach himself to her, not as to a sovereign lady,
but as to a mistress of his own rank. She added :

Meridiana by name and born of the best stock, I
have ever strivgn above all for this, to find a man
in every way my peer, so that I could count him
worthy to pluck the first flowers of my maidenhood ;
but, until thou earnest, I h§.d discovered no one
who did not lack something of what I craved.
Therefore, as thou pleasest me at every point, do
not delay to taste all the joy which God in the
Highest, thy master and mine, raineth down from
heaven upon thee. Unless thou provokest me to
just wrath, thou wilt be blest with all bounty of
money and rank ; only, when thou fully blossomest
forth once more through my care, thou must repel
thy lady disdain with the same scorn by which
she has made thee wretched. For I know that
she will repent and will turn again to what she
once despised, if she have the chance. If she had
shrunk from thy love through mere maidenly in-
stinct, her conquest of thee would have redounded
to her credit. But this alone was the reason for
her insolent rejection of thee, v r ho, by general
opinion, wert the most lovable of all (her suitors),

that she might smile on others without exciting any
distrust, thus veiling Aphrodite with the false robe
of Minerva. Under the cover of thy repulse others
marched on to mastery. Alas ! Pallas is driven
away and under the shield lurketh a Gorgon. Thy
obvious overthrow hath given a shelter to the foul-
ness of a wanton ; if thou shalt with proper spirit
declare this creature for ever unworthy of thy
embraces, I shall make thee pre-eminent among all
the lofty ones of the earth.

Perhaps thou fearest
a cheat and thou art trying to shun the craft of
the sucubus demon in me.

Footless is this fear,
for those whom thou fearest are also on their guard
against the tricks of men,

and they entrust them-
selves to no one unless ample security iff given;
and never do men bring back anything but sin from
those demons whom they have deceived.

For if
indeed, as seldom, the. demons bring success or
wealth — these (seeming blessings) pass away in such
futility and vanity that they are -of no account, or
else they lead to the distress and destruction of the
deceiver.

But I exact from thee no security, for
I have learned to the full the nature of thy sincerity.
Nor am I trying to be made secure, but to make
thee secure.

I am glad to give thee everything,
and I want thee to carry all this (money) away
before our union, and often to return for more
until thou shalt prove by discharging all thy debts
that it is not fairy gold, and thou shalt not fear
to make just return for the outlays of true love.

I desire love, not sovereignty, nor indeed do I wish
to be thy equal, but thy maid-servant ; in me thou
wilt find naught which will not to thy senses smack
of love ; true judgment can detect in me no token
of enmity.’

Meridiana said these and many things to like
purpose, although needless, for Gerbert, greedy for
the things that he had lost, snatched her with hearty
assent almost in the midst of her words, eager to

escape through plenty the thraldom of poverty
and to enter with speed into the pleasing peril of
Venus. Hence the suppliant promised all, and
plighted his troth and — what was not asked —
joined to his oath kisses, leaving inviolate all else
that pertaineth to chastity.

Gerbert returned heavy-laden, pretending to his
creditors that he had received a remittance, and
he cleared himself of his debts slowly, to prevent
rumours of treasure-trove.

From now on, free
(from embarrassment) and abounding in the gifts
of Meridiana, he grew rich in chattels, he increased
his staff qf servants, he heaped up stores of clothing
and coins, he filled his cellars and larders, so that
his plenty at Rheims was like the glory of Solomon
in Jerusalem.

Moreover, the full delight of his bed
was no less, though the great king was the lover
of many and he of one.* Every night he was
taught by her, who had full knowledge of the past,
what to do during the day.

These were nights like
those* marvellous ‘ noctes ’ of Numa, in which
Romans feigned that sacrifices were made and that
colloquies of the gods were in men’s ears, inasmuch
as he worshipped one (goddess) from whose teach-
ings he secretly sweated wisdom in nightly study.

Gerbert profited to the full from his double instruc-
tion, both of the bed and-of the benches, and he rose
in glorious triumph to the highest pinnacles of fame ;
nor did the lore of the lecturer in his lesson advance
him less than that of the lecturess of his liaison —
the second in winning his way to heights of fame,
the first in acquiring those arts that produce sweet-
ness and light. In a short time he became every
one’s master, distancing all men — the bread of the
hungry, the robe of the needy, and the ready re-
demption from all oppression — and there was no
city that did not envy Rheims.

When the ‘ wretched daughter of Babylon ’ who,
through her pride, had brought him into the depths
heard and saw these things, she awaited with
eager ears the wonted messages and marvelled at
and chid the delay ; and when at length she
realized that she was spurned, then she, for the first
time, ‘ glowed with fierce fires ’ which she had
scornfully repelled. Now she lived more cleanly
and walked more meticulously and met him more
modestly and spoke more reverently ; and because
she felt that she had altogether fallen into contempt
and dejection, she quaffed malice of mind from the
very beaker in which she had given her lover frenzy
to drink. She madly seized the bit, caring not
whither the reins guided or drew, but r obedient
throughout the whole course to whatever spurs
urged her ; and she strove to lure him to her hook
with the devices with which he had' once tempted
her — that is, with every known bait. But in vain
did she lay her snares,* stretch her nets, cast her
hooks. For the avenger of old hatred and flatterer
of new love denied what love is wont to give and
cast at her what hatred is wont to inflict. Having
wasted all its efforts, the woman’s love grew to
madness, and her bitter anguish exceeded her sense
of sorrow ; and just as the stupor of the limbs
admitted no medicine, so the spirit of exhausted
hope felt no solace. An old woman living near
Gerbert aroused her one flay, just as if she were
bringing the dead to life, and, through a hole in
her cottage wall, pointed him out walking alone
in his little orchard during the heat of the day after
his meal. In a little while they saw him lie down
under the shade of a branching oak and compose
himself in sleep. She could not compose herself,
but, casting aside her gown, she gave herself wholly
to him under his cloak in only her smock ; and,
though veiled, excited him with kisses and embraces.
From the man, full of wine and food, she easily
obtained her wish; for the heat of youth and of
the season, and the warmth of wine and the fullness

here came together to one banquet of Venus. In
such wise, forsooth, Apollo and Pan, Ceres and
Bacchus, ever attend Venus, but, from the notable
gathering of these, Pallas (goddess of wisdom) is
ever excluded. The woman loaded Gerbert with
kisses and caresses, and, though sparing of words,
she bestowed flattering blandishment, until he re-
called Meridiana in the confusion of shame and
with the trepidation of a mighty fear. Wishing
ashamedly to escape (the amorous girl), he left her
with a promise to return, and in the accustomed
grove sought at the feet of Meridiana pardon for
his fault. She haughtily disdained him for a long
time, but finally she demanded and obtained of
him homage for security, because he had been
found wanting, and he safely continued in her
service.

In the meanwhile it happened that the Arch-
bishop of Rheims came to his end, and Gerbert, as
the reward of high repute, was enthroned in his
stead. Some time after that, when he was staying
in Rome in connection with the business of his
newlv-found dignity, he was made by the Pope,
Cardinal and Archbishop of Ravenna; and after
a little while, upon the death of His Holiness, he
mounted by public election to his chair. During
the whole time of his priesthood, he did not once,
at the giving of the sacrament, partake of the Lord’s
body and blood (either because of fear or reverence),
but by dexterous stratagem pretended to do so.
Meridiana, however, appeared to him in the last
year of his papacy, assuring the pledge of his life
to him, until he should celebrate mass at Jerusalem ;
he thought to escape by his vow of biding at Rome.
But it came to pass that he was celebrating mass
in that church where, by popular report, was placed
that beam which Pilate had fastened upon the top
of the Lord’s Cross, inscribed with the record of
His passion — hence the church is called to this day

Jerusalem — and lo, he beheld opposite to him
Meridiana clapping her hands, as though in joyous
expectation of his next coming to her. Having
grasped the meaning of the vision, and having
learned the name of the place, he called together
all the cardinals, the clergy, and the people, and
made confession, leaving unrevealed no fault of
his whole life. He moreover decreed that to clergy
and people the mass should be given in the presence
of all men. Hence many celebrate the mass on
an altar reared in the midst, while the Pope in his
chair partaketh with his face fixed on the faces of
them all.

Gerbert made truly holy the short remnant of
his life by constant and earnest repentance and
reverently made his last confession. He was buried
in the Church of St. John Lateran, in a marble tomb
which perpetually sweateth, but the drops do not
unite into a stream unless as a prophecy of the death
of some wealthy Roman. Men say that, when the
parting of a Pope is at hand, the stream floweth
to the ground, but when the death of some noble,
it poureth out even to the third or fourth or fifth
part of the other, as if indicating the dignity of each
man by its smaller or larger flow. Although Gerbert,
on account of his avarice, may have been long held
fast by the glue of the devil, yet he ruled with
splendour and with sureness of hand the Roman
Church; and it is said that some of his wealth
so hath endured to the times of all his successors.

We have heard that Pope Leo initiated the con-
ditions under which the heirs of Peter Leonis, by
disinheriting St. Peter, still possess Castellum
Crescentii (Castel San Angelo). This Peter Leonis,
a Jew, was converted to our faith by the work, of
Pope Leo, and took from him the name Leonis ;
and Pope Leo eagerly endowed him with revenues
and estates and entrusted to him the guard of the
aforesaid castle, to his great glory and honour.

The construction of Spanish necromancy: twelfth-century astrology and the case ofGerbert of Aurillac

Understanding the place ofastrologyin the intellectual world of the central middle agesposes interesting challengesfor the historian. Its practice was sometimes encouraged and sometimes frowned upon by medieval writers, who were not always consistent in their attitudes. Insofar as medieval scholarssaw astrology as part ofthe arts of the quadrivium, it was regardedas a legitimate practice.1As such, its learning was encouraged as part of the study of disciplines such as medicine, weather-forecasting and the computus. However, if astrology was used for the prognostication of political or private events, its practice was not as easily justified for it raised complex theological questions.2This whole situation gave rise to a complex scenario in which astrologers were not always seen purely as men of learning by medieval writers. Twelfth-century chroniclers in particular, present an image of the astrologer that is dangerously close to that of the necromancer –thus reinforcing the perception that this was a problematic and potentially hazardous discipline. As an example of the various and complex attitudes of non-expert well-educated churchmen towards astrology, and its relationship to necromancy, this article will examine the Black Legend of Gerbert of Aurillac and its evolution through the eleventh and twelfth centuries, particularly in the work of the English historian William of Malmesbury (c.1090-c.1142). Exploring the posthumous reputation of Gerbert of Aurillac (c.946-1003), the future pope Sylvester II, presents a unique opportunity to evaluate what medieval writers thought of the relationship between occult knowledge and science at the time. Accused of necromancy shortly after his death, Gerbert’s reputation as a magician grew parallel
2| P a g eto his standing as a scholar of the quadrivium. However, despite being widely acknowledged, these two aspects of Gerbert’s posthumous career were not systematically associated until William of Malmesbury’s account of the legend in his Gesta regum anglorum (c.1125-6). William wrote his chronicle at akeytime, when England was a pioneering centre for the reception of newly available Latin translations of Greek and Arabic astrological material. Thus, it is relevant that William is the first to establish a clear connection between Gerbert’s astrological expertise, purportedly acquired under suspect circumstances in Muslim Spain, and necromancy. Representationsof Gerbert as a necromancer and as a scientific medieval innovator have been the subject of extensive study; however, the relationship betweenthe two has only been alluded to in passing, until recently. In an article published in 2012, E. R. Truitt looked in detail at the connections between Gerbert’s Black Legend and his intellectual pursuits.3Truitt’s argument develops around the assumption that Gerbert’s academic activities were associated with his reputation as a necromancer at an early stage, during the eleventh century. He also argues that William of Malmesbury’s discussion of Gerbert’s Black Legend in the twelfth century reflects William’s positive attitude towards astrology. Furthermore, for Truitt, William’s belief in the harmlessness of future foreknowledge is proven by the fact that William credits Gerbert with using the science of the stars to devise a talking head which providesanswers to his questions about the future. This Truitt sees as indicative of more general attitudes towards astrology in the twelfth century. It is true that some individuals held positive attitudes towards astrology in the central middle ages, but these were varied and complex –not least because the arrival in Latin Europe of increasing amounts of new material of Arabic and Greek origin needed to be understoodandalso carefully evaluated before its incorporation into the corpus of accepted Christian knowledge. This was an exciting and positive process for the elite group of scholars

Gerbert, the Pope Who Secretly Shunned the Eucharist Walter Map and Gerald of Wales both recount another episode in which the principal figure avoided receiving the Eucharist for years on end. But in this case, the individual was not an ambiguous supernatural bride, but a learned man of the Church, Gerbert of Aurillac, who became Pope Sylvester II (999-1003). As a young man, Gerbert had traveled to Spain and lived at a monastery where he studied mathematics and astronomy. His exotic travels and knowledge quickly attracted rumors of necromancy.266 The legends of his league with a devil appear in the middle of the eleventh century and are retold throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.267 265 A result of Lateran IV’s prohibition of clerics administering the trial by ordeal was the further division of secular and sacred justice (Elliott, Proving Woman, 16; Bartlett, Trial by Fire and Water, 99). These stories maintain interaction between the two spheres by placing the priest alongside the secular rulers and nobility in the church. The secular rulers are those who initiate the testing of their wives, and they force the confrontation in the presence of the sacred Host, perhaps in spite of the priest’s wishes. The sacred and secular together confront the supernatural and witness that the consecration of the Eucharist is all that is required to drive away the demon. 266 Ann Lawrence-Mathers and Carolina Escobar-Vargas, Magic and Medieval Society (London: Routledge, 2014), 23. 267 The first written reference to his unorthodox behavior appears eighty years after his death, in Hugh of Flavigny’s Chronicon Virdunense (c. 1085), which describes Gerbert’s strange habits and associates him with the term 86 The first detailed account appears in William of Malmesbury’s Gesta regum Anglorum in which William writes that Gerbert learned necromancy under a Saracen master in Spain and then made a pact with a demon to bring him safely back to France and advance his church career. William also claims that Gerbert created a mechanical head animated by a spirit, which told him that he would not die until he celebrated Mass in Jerusalem.268 Walter adapts certain elements of the legend, such as Gerbert’s affiliation with a demon and the prediction of his death, but Walter’s is the first known account which introduces a supernatural lover and describes Gerbert’s avoidance of the Eucharist. Both Gerald and Walter chose to write about the life of Gerbert, but Walter recounted the story in much greater detail in De nugis curialium. 269 Walter tells of a youth Gerbert, a brilliant young student at Reims who is struck with love for a maiden who does not return his affections. The agonies induced by unrequited love lead Gerbert to wander out of town, hungry and forlorn. Gerbert, like Henno, walks into the woods at noon and finds a beautiful woman sitting in the shade of the trees. But unlike the distress feigned by Henno’s love, this woman is composed, and sits before a heap of money. Gerbert’s first instinct is to flee, “fearing phantom or delusion.”270 But the lady calls to him by name, introduces herself as Meridiana, and promises him wealth and success if he will be her lover and pledge allegiance to her alone. She speaks directly to his fears: “You fear, perhaps, an illusion, and are meaning to evade the subtlety of a succubus in my person. You are mistaken.”271 She assuages his doubts and uses devout language, implying that praestigia, suggesting a connection with the forbidden arts. Lawrence-Mathers and Escobar-Vargas, Magic and Medieval Society, 23. 268 William of Malmesbury, Gesta regum Anglorum, ed. and trans. R.A.B. Mynors, R.M. Thomson, and M. Winterbottom (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1998), 279-95. 269 De nugis, 351-64; Gemma, 28. In known accounts of Gerbert’s life, only Walter and Gerald directly address his refusal to celebrate the Eucharist. One cannot help but speculate whether the two of them discussed the story and the ramifications of his avoidance of the sacrament. 270 “…fantasma siue prestigium timens” (De nugis, 352-53). 271 “Times forsitan illudi, et sucubi demonis in me uitare tendis argucias. Frustra” (De nugis, 354-55). 87 she is a bearer of blessings from God himself. Meridiana urges Gerbert not to hesitate but to “accept all the prosperity which the Most High is raining upon you from heaven—his creature am I as much as you.”272 Her insistence on her orthodox identity does not raise Gerbert’s suspicions, or if it does, he is careless of whether she is truly a devout or demonic being. He leaps at her offer, accepting her love and her wealth with greedy zeal, careless of later consequences.273 Gerbert enjoys prosperity, popularity, and dazzling success in Reims, all due to the influence of Meridiana who not only provides him with wealth, but also exercises minute control over his deeds: “Every night she, who possessed full knowledge of the past, instructed him in what he was to do day by day.”274 He follows her every instruction, and it leads to an increase of his status and success. Ironically, her presence in his life yields positive results, not only for himself but for the poor and the citizens of his city: “Within a short time no one was his equal, he surpassed all and became the bread of the hungry and the raiment of the needy and the ready saviour from all oppression; nor was there a city to which Reims was not an object of envy.”275 It seems that Meridiana is not averse to producing positive side-effects in exchange for her control over the life and soul of Gerbert. But her power in his life, though it enables him to become the 272 “…ne differas omnem suscipere felicitatem quam tibi de celo pluit Altissimus, cuius ego creatura sum ut tu” (De nugis, 354-55). 273 She spoke devout and reassuring words, “but there was no need of them, for Gerbert in his greed for what was offered interrupted her with his consent almost in the middle of her speech, anxious as he was to be wealthy and escape the duress of poverty, and swift to enter upon the beautiful but perilous course of love” (De nugis, 357). As with the tale of Henno, Walter’s narrative voice gives warning to the audience from the start, though the protagonists are ignorant of, or willfully blind to, the dangers these females represent. 274 “Singulis ab ipsa que preteritorum habebat scienciam docetur noctibus, quid in die sit agendum” (De nugis, 356- 57). Though Walter never records a moment of Gerbert’s recognition of Meridiana’s devilish identity, her unnatural knowledge and her association with the darkness of night, rather than the light of day, must eventually lead Gerbert to an awareness that she is not a “creature of God,” as she had asserted. 275 “In modico fit impar omnibus, uniuersos excedit, fit panis esuriencium, uestis egencium, et omnis oppressionis promta redempcio; et non est ciuitas cui non sit inuidiosa Remis” (De nugis, 356-57). 88 “bread of the hungry,” prevents Gerbert from partaking for himself in the bread which sates spiritual hunger, the Eucharist. Thanks to Meridiana’s influence, Gerbert rises in ranks of priesthood and eventually becomes pope, taking the name of Sylvester II. But his allegiance is withheld from God, as revealed by his constant, careful refusal to partake in the Eucharist: “During the whole course of his priesthood, when the sacrament of the Lord’s body and blood was celebrated he never tasted it, either in fear or respect, but by the most wary concealment feigned the act which he did not perform.”276 Rather than being united with Christ and the Church through reception of the Eucharist, Gerbert is united with Meridiana, which causes him to practice recurrent acts of deception by feigning reception of the Holy Sacrament. This insight offers strong proof of his consort’s demonic identity, for his association with her causes him to shun communion with Christ. Just as Henno’s wife could not bear to receive the sacrament herself, Gerbert, knowingly allied to Meridiana, cannot bear to celebrate the Eucharist either. Walter’s account suggests that the Eucharist is not only repellent to demons themselves, but also those in the service of demons. Yet a day of reckoning must come, as Meridiana herself warns Gerbert, promising that his life will continue in safety until he celebrates Mass in Jerusalem. With these words, she offers partial truth, while withholding knowledge that would save Gerbert. Thinking he is safe as long as he never travels to Jerusalem, Gerbert celebrates Mass in a church in Rome. After celebrating, he looks up to see Meridiana exulting and anticipating his death. Gerbert then learns that the church is named Jerusalem.277 At that very moment, he decides to make a public confession before cardinals, clergy, and common people, and he does not keep a single 276 “…et toto sacerdocii sui tempore confecto sacramento corporis et sanguinis Dominici non gustabat, ob timorem uel ob reuerenciam, et cautissimo furto quod non agebatur simulabat” (De nugis, 360-61). 277 This church named “Jerusalem” is the “Basilica of S. Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome, so called because it was built to house relics, especially a relic of the True Cross, from Jerusalem” (De nugis, 360n2). 89 transgression hidden, but confesses fully

Walter does not offer any insight into the response of those who heard his confession, but the Pope’s words prove efficacious in freeing him from Meridiana’s power, for he “sincerely hallowed the short remainder of his life with assiduous and severe penance, and died in a good confession.”278 Nothing more is said of Meridiana, and Gerbert’s repentance is deemed sincere. Walter’s closing comments about Gerbert acknowledge the contradictory nature of his life: “Although through covetousness Gerbert was held captive a long time by the birdlime of the devil, he ruled the Roman Church greatly and with a strong hand…”279 Walter’s evaluation of Gerbert is surprisingly positive, when one considers that most of Gerbert’s deeds were influenced by a devil. Walter never explains what Meridiana’s end game may have been.280 She gave Gerbert wealth, success, power, and influence, and under her guidance, Reims and its citizens prospered. The single detrimental effect of Gerbert’s liaison with Meridiana appears to be his inability to receive the Eucharist. But for the clerics of the twelfth century like Walter, such a consequence would have been viewed as more than sufficient punishment, for this effectively cut Gerbert off from communion with Christ and the Church. As mentioned above, the faithful were expected to receive the Eucharist once a year, at a minimum, while priests would communicate on a weekly or even daily basis. For many long years, Gerbert would have suffered the constant torture of feigning to participate 278 “Gerbertus modicum uite sue residuum assidua at acerrima penitencia sincere beauit, et in bona confessione decessit” (De nugis, 360-61). 279 “Licet autem Gerbertus auaricie causa glutino diaboli diutissime detentus fuerit, magnifice tamen in manu forti Romanam rexit ecclesiam…” (De nugis, 362-63). 280 Just as Meridiana’s motives remain hidden, the intent of Henno’s bride and all the other demon-women is unknown as well. The only common denominator seems to be that the succubi are attracted to men with the potential to be in positions of power and influence. Perhaps the devils hope to enjoy supreme control over offices of political and sacred power. 90 in the eucharistic celebration, all the while knowing that he was truly cut off from the Eucharist’s sacramental efficacy.
Gerald of Wales also highlights Gerbert’s failure to receive the Host, as he relates a much more condensed account of Gerbert’s life: There is also the story of Gerbert, who, as often as he should have received the body of Christ when celebrating Mass, placed it secretly in a certain little locket hanging from his neck.281 When at length this was discovered through confession, it was established in the Roman Church that popes turn themselves toward the people at the time of communion. One reads concerning Gerbert that he did penance, and that while still alive he caused to be amputated each of the limbs through which he had vowed and given himself to the devil. It is said that his marble tomb sweats great drops of water at the exact moment of a pope’s death.282 Gerald’s brief account omits any clear explanation of the cause of Gerbert’s avoidance of the Host. No succubus such as Meridiana appears in this version. Instead, Gerald emphasizes the Eucharist, and makes Gerbert’s penance far more dramatic. Gerald includes the implication that the pope’s failure came about because he had “given himself to the devil,” but his central concern is with Gerbert’s treatment of the Eucharist. This makes sense in the context in which Gerald incudes the tale within the Gemma ecclesiastica. The story appears at the end of his chapter which is entirely devoted to delineating the proper reverence, protocol, and means of preserving the Eucharist. In this chapter, Gerald is interested in exploring not only the proper treatment of the Eucharist, but also its mistreatment. He closes with this tale of Gerbert’s distinct 281 Interestingly, the word Gerald uses here is perula, which is identical to the word he used in the Topographia Hibernica when describing the wallet containing the viaticum, which the priest carried around his neck when he met with the werewolves in the woods of Meath. For the English translation, I use Gerald of Wales, The Jewel of the Church: A Translation of the Gemma Ecclesiastica by Giraldus Cambrensis, trans. John J. Hagen (Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1979), 28 [hereafter, “H.Gem”]. 91 lack of devotion and reverence towards the sacrament, using the tale as a fitting admonition and conclusion to his chapter.

Well, everything is already melting.

It turns into pain.

I am alive !!!

However, no anthropomorphic face is seen here. The light also remains a light that changes. The pain comes and goes replacing the tingling with convulsions and a million doors at one point.

Time goes by I know he goes the opposite way how do I know? There are four walls in a cube so it soothes. What could be better in this situation to part the cube of the same black cube in the white room of Bianka ??

Another 1024 cycles I already sit on the walls and doors so no light comes and there are moments where I disappear again.
Probably fed me or something like that. Vav's face is not what sustains me.

I hear behind the wall is the bustle of the bottom up to three times before unlocking.

There is no handcuff there is even a window behind which is black nothing with blue dots for the time kaa
irony of the little blue dot.

The dot doesn't change its location because I've scratched on the glass with my fakin nail which nails barely know what hardness polymer is made hahah feel however overwhelmed for them no matter who they are on the other side of the door.

The memory has not disappeared anywhere, as it turns out. I remember how I carved Endeavor as it turned out I was alone. I remember looking at the archive and saw an ancient record of myself. Mate unknown you tads and then another version of tads and then mate unknown. Boys no one psejhams two .. haha yes Shredinger's cat I am for you well then… I remember that when I opened the compression corridor I was torn out of the void and I remember how the vacuum squeezed from the inside of the lungs so it is unforgettable. it will even be remembered without memory. I remember how I disappeared in the cold.

Aceros when the voice of emptiness "CARICA NEBA ZVEZDA VOSTOKA PRIJEM…" and a child cried long after…

Starts wanting to eat half an hour later I have eaten the polymer cover of the bed

2 hours later there is no bed and a couple of minimal elements of the room such as ceramics and a mirror.

They really have not taken into account their metabolic apparatus by my dear dad and what has been installed.

I'll wait until the door opens which my skin is already shining better considering the mirror particles… yes I like it.,

I wonder what they are doing now and whether there is still a pixel-like ball that turns out to be just a delay behind the window .. or its material hvz what imitates a window.

I found the batteries behind the plasterboard yes the plasterboard wall that was hidden behind the mirror.

Knocking out the wall aura of such a huge depressurization did not come in strange.
Bert will wait for the door to open.

Chapter X1 VIVA ISHTAR: D hahahahah

Bianca at skycity recover Dev and Pixsee fixx the mess take next
On back to arrival, Bi from previous realty actually works and recover
Sky city shards by itself so can save frozen corpse of Ish floating
In vacuum but unable to do anything with dev. So Bi askt to Ish to resurrect
In some way Dev without any operational reanimator and WHERE destroyed ..
So the possible way is at arrival to steal it to gods at the very beginning.
Oly this alteration will make maybe even bigger mess ... arrival will not happen
Ish destroy gods at first deorbiting maneuver

kinda where alternate ending was where she is alone in space ship together with beeping computers where Ai ejects her body in space to die .. then from previous ending the failed Bi what Dev installed into skycity causing armageddon saves MeriDI so some wandering around empty skycity and ghostly talks with Dev and Pixies can take place to figure out pan to fix something again causing maybe not so much clauning vs damage
now she got all tech of goods even to prevent the arrival of gods so even prevent the birth of her own and maybe disappear from history or dunno how this paradoxes of cloning machine actually behave
Bi asctyaly the same ai from Serpent Wing now totally merged with Ish
Bi SHow the all she knows about Dev cuz dev created Bi. So IShMeridi
Truly make to love Dev or maybe it is just manipulation from Serpent side
Bipolar consciousness of Meridi

Have you heard of scattered time machine error?
Hardly, but I am this mistake and someone very close to me on the other side is this mistake.

We will hardly ever meet again due to all the stupid paradoxes, but I
thirst for thirst is something indefinite, but this ironic
what a miracle imperfect mechanism that is a reality. I know you read it. I know I love you and you love me.
You little time machine boy thrown into a quantum collapsing sea without a lifebuoy.

I know you are looking for me however it is painful because I know every one of your failures and only failures await you. I am not and will not be your reality and I will not be myself. there is one left
Directions For the very beginning and the moment of arrival. I will correct all this misunderstanding that has arisen.
Only I will never be there again.

Hey Bianka is it called ?? are you me now ??

Yes, Mrs. I am your submissive maid.

Don't cry Bianka you cooked all this just as I did you but I… Let's live

without unnecessary expressions of false humility I know the stalk I don't see and so
admire and covet my body in time. Sorry to endure but still endure my presence.

I'm overweight as you noticed unobtrusive won't bother you…. Unless you bother me.

MeriDi pulls the kitchen knife out of the drawer and flashes sharply around its neck.

Hand reflectors drop off the edge yes Bianka can see you survival instincts work perfectly.

NU what would be appropriate for glass and plastic to wear something normal organic so you can maybe find. do not believe that the ancestors did not freeze anything because they liked criogenica let's find some columbia….

Mrs he did not meet you either. I was all the time creating I know how he did it and how much you have donated. Madam I am in pain does that mean you too?>? you see there in the opposite room he has someone I remember. You go I'm good at simulating here no more clowning it's a real illusion !!
Go to the key entry and you will be able to be two.

Bianka thank you I do not know what it is I understand I do not understand… you then unlocked?
Inside there is a strange silence Bianka's noise really disappears or she just simulates that simule and pretends to pretend. Maybe I'm not at all anymore. I put the Bianka iteration for the sake of peace.

What to tell me to the guy Vinja is projecting and who died there because of her and not me. Well, at least in the snow, it's the best way to die and freeze to death.

I open the door hello Dev I'm Inana Ishtara so that Meridian Magdalene Original
My Bianca it's you if it's direct.

Devs coming to the consciousness simulated .. Where am I?
What is this place about ??
Who are you ??
What's your name
Meridiana I'm Dev !!

aaa it's a dream Ish well yes Ish why I don't remember you and anything else too.

Because this place is WHERE it's like the realm of the dead excuse me, I did it again.

The dose of hologram disappears from the wall returns to Bianka's typical noise but vinja says nothing.

Bianka I will drink now and drink a lot more so if I damage something I don't know for me there is no reason not to drink now !!!! Can you still get up from here ???

I don't know ISH here, everything has been malt for eternity and the columbari's empty trail is nothing to eat.

however, you don't even need to have a temperature close to zero here.

No Bianka I need, I want to eat !!! and drink why I am so unbearable why do you make me feel it all ?? He ends up cheating on it himself, or here and there all of us here and I all don't know ourselves.

Have to go back and make me unprecedented then I won't have this suffering Bianka !!! ??
Madam, then I will have to take over all your brains for a while until we get up.

Do what you have to do just as everything has already happened.

MeriDi disengaged with a loud tick, falling backwards to the floor if anyone saw it thought he was dead and dead. Eternity passed by plastering loops and branching into endless worm nets, all pierced by small thin clots of red blood. Meridian heart chords where many destinies are entangled as fish through times and places.

Here and there the nets are especially abundant and somewhere in the distance someone hears me calling someone who is still waiting for him. Someone there repeats this mantra without stopping… carica neba zvezda vostoka.

these names brings consciousness through the singularity delusions and chaos until bright light splits the darkness
of the universe opens STARRY sinkhole of proud peace rotates their mirrors planes

filling the void opposite the little blue ball in the distance Tiamat gigantic body brings thousands US dollars
sleepy sleep anunnaki life. they lifelessly showered in their sarcophagi gathered in giant columbariums until the heat of the sun-stricken Tiamat titanium beat their hearts.

a wave of gravity like a tsunami washing over the lands of the sun. the creature in both the sea and the forests feels it
and now nothing will be as bright as it has been for millions of years.

death and life will create union. there is a small star shining in the gutter that grows to a certain extent as it goes beyond the solar disk during the day so this is not a disk but a reverse pyramid
which blades close to pierce the virgin body of the earth to fill it with the seed of death.

Slower and closer approaching the blade now visible ice it is a giant ice approaching the ground
Cuball getting frozen go buoy a lot of life frozen river years only ice and snow.

however, as time passes, the sun overcomes the ice melts on the blade as tears water drops dripping then the river falls from the sky to the ground below it grows mountains on the hill grows a tree a tree there will never be an invisible magic tree fighting from the flesh more than from feel
all its roots drill deep into the rock of the mountain and through the mountain expands hundreds of kilometers of land it drips to every plant freed from frost every beetle dog ancient microbes or cousins from ancient insects all life is understood and taken for granted. even after thousands of years of standing in the woods full of moving and green trees where the very end of the mountain tree of life is now indistinguishable from others green and hard bark wind songs listen.

the sky opposite the White Moon rotates slowly, reversing the pyramid in one special moment Tiamat heartbeat happens second time and the third ... fourth ... Gravitational waves are now starting to remind beast heart rhythm

heavenly town with their death during sleep Sleeping inhabitants divided into four sites are
chosen instead of calling a couple of hundred meters above the ground.

it's time for someone to wake up. one of all the columbari is a distinct fourth which is above the hill just above the tree of life. a strong wind blows and the tree scatters the pollen so much that the poppies constrict from them and lightning is thrown into the thunder erupts smoke and trembling stands for months they cover the sky sak lit acid poured storm fog all the weather seems confused in the dance of madness. silence
occurs quickly after this endless toxin. the top of the hill shines in the sun it has descended a quarter of the
pyramid which now forms like a fairytale castle at the top of the hill so that it was created by the impressionist cubist
it is no longer a reverse but a proper pyramid perched on top of the hill.

if you can properly see the terrace and open huge windows, through which the direct morning sun creeps into the
dark room where only one columbarium is lit. the heat with the incoming sunnaves
causes theto recede and the only sarcophagus comes to life
. opens his eyes hard beats now the heart breaks the crystal cocoon and
immediately falls to the floor tverdems with his hands to his mouth and nostrils pain breathing looking at the wall in the columns he puts on a special thing he is able to breathe without sap sitting in front of an open window and watch this long sunrise for a long time. someone has been waiting for their first day. Happiness and joy take over the heart of ANU.

he managed to whisper no one's unheard words to the wind to the sun.

Meanwhile, in another reality however, is cut everything upside down and spožkāis beauty dropping through my being infinite calculations and simulation iterations with smoke and noise šīstošiem Minerals atomic bomb of similar strength hit the mountain izkūpinot fall victim to the tree of life and
half the valley and of course all the fragments of the pyramid. there will never be any newcomers here
and for billions of years the sun will spread and the blue ball will evaporate.

Some reptile tries to bite his ear MeriDi opens one eye soaking and already the tail of a rapo just hangs from the corner of her sweet little bloody lips. Bianka prijem here….
Bianka hello are you there ??

Oh the devil, do not say that you will stay in heaven… I would really benefit from your charming talents now.
MeriDi's erect legs wiped cold reptile blood from her face. sun shines exactly at lunch times pasha middle malaka HoraMeridiana your maucibu… should get out of the crater
until the heat is not like baking on the pan.

After about 5 km, the crater wall begins. a long tiring climb is still a bit and the peak
is no, I'm on the top of my head hissing and cracking it is not a good sign it shows only one about the of tanning
approach needs water or ice or honey. The shockwave has leveled out any potential shadow
potential. somewhere in the distance, a large stack of trees is visible in the air, the roots of the scattered branches are pulled out, at least something that will give a small shade !!

Milk is closer and the tree does not look like a tree, but the limbs of the body are distorted and, like an
artist's brush smeared to form woody forms, glittering dark black-red puddles of blood spread on the ground, hardly anyone will understand it, but there is no one to see
or have an opinion. Meridian kneel at one of the dark mirrored blood beds, and drink it as a hungry infant feeding again upon mothers breast then wiped of dress shee fully emerges into liquid and sweating shelf sparkling fumes of plastic and burning flesh smell rises high air .. time it's the smell that once upon of times god was so pleased of ...

ticking noise and the drone of slow dormant time I was paralyzed by the sun already approaching to touch the horizon. Cleanup sand from boots and put back dress. She finds throughout this grotesque kind of shelter
She covers with twigs and falls into a strong sleep without simulations and slips the usual unconscious beta rhythm as a child safety at the same breast.

Sleep is interrupted by some movement, the tingling of something creeps back on top and already inside the ears of the vagina and nose. MeriDi instantly throws in some random direction but immediately falls because something is behind his feet. the darkness of the pitch moon does not shine at all or is such a month now.
it has already grasped something like a choking snake fills the throat. The lungs of the lungs are unable to move. It is a daunting feeling when the eye cannot take its usual throws in the hope of finding a visual object of interest to be heard. Bianaka, you really had to drop me one here .. anmind
imaginary dialogue in the[opened to the convulsive movements of the cemented members.
at some point the dark sky lights up one by one, and now you can clearly see the clouds
recession of the, opening a miraculous view of the milky road, although the eyes can not move the universe
a vast magnitude of this somehow creeps into the paralyzed body of Meridiana.

time goes by and closer to morning it's day number two stagnation doesn't seem so ironic
anymore it's just numbness and overcoming the stabs of small miriazhu needles can move both fingers and slip your legs and blink your eyes.

When traveling sheds wow almost do not fall off the branch realizing the surrounding situation MeriDi
is located on a branch such as a nest. It is a huge tree and the bottom is a slope of the edge of the crater that was filled with water for some time before the river went here and now it has returned.

ha the tree probably did not want to drown in sleep .. I probably know what a tree is.

here on the horizon spills my brother Shmash and its rays in the morning very gently warm and caress
their flesh. even a couple of stupid birds arriving from somewhere start jumping over tree branches.
The branches and the tree itself are nowhere near similar to flesh and bloody limbs, but have become
a normal tree with bark needles.

Bianka prijem are you or not?
Click click on the left ear of someone scratching against the eardrum. There will be an insect crept in.
MeriDi slips down into the water and puts his hand behind his ear.
An insect starting to suffocate spills out. It's like a beetle or a spider with wings spare, probably so thick and thicker wings. The insect looks more like metal than chitin.

Bianka ???
insect crosses usas 1, 2, 3, 4 times
now no Bianka is that your only option? a if i had eaten you ??
ha do not believe it is a pleasure close to hysterical to see you.
anuka topography and geological analysis of the territory up to the time of the challenge !!!

the insect kko fumbles and flies hard waving its blunt wings.
Ahhahahah nee well you think timer eventually I was lucky.

now it is already the sun again hora maridana and median screaming needles waiting for your insect to return. Meanwhile, the stupid birds are offendedly trying to restore their nest, which was previously possible here - I have a cry of guilt in Iraq, but I will wait for these birds and them !!!

so sore stupid birds life is cruel …

In the distance you can hear the hum of small wings and here the insect has already returned.
It sits on MeriDi's face and quickly pours into her nose, creeping up to her brain
at the beginning of the web it connects to the vestibular apparatus then slowly wraps around the spine and then enters the Meridian's heart where the blood flow in the small blunt wings begins
rotate like a generator in front of the eye to the nude shots scenes and feelings from somewhere so familiar.
I see the crumbling heaven city in the lady's disappearing gas
repeat. I see the starship and I see me thrown into emptiness… I see the alley of the cross
I see a boy in the desert who has come to meet me because I thought I was real.
I see a burning stake with a beautiful girl whose bones are evaporated in the wind. I see cities with domes with people
beautiful clothes where songs are played where a guy runs away from chasing a hidden book. I see him sitting in the woods and he comes to me where I give him gold. then I am locked in a room without windows with a door that no soul is able to unlock

then there is emptiness.
the sea above the blue sky appears
On the seashore, in a white minimalist style two-storey house, there is a pool where the same girl swims and coming out of water I can see water drops running along her hips and breasts. She starts to talk
HI Bianaka, what are you baking here? Go in the water. It is as good as the milk. I will go out tonight with Donny, maybe ya wish to join us?”. Aa I answer that no I need to do some work. Laura dropped the towel `well as you know I'm just offering so don't cry later that here we get bored all the time, by the way I'm going to leave tomorrow my new relocation ... to aaaa area 51 haha spy tinkies binkies`. Laura goes to the veranda. I say `you just make phone call when on place, and do not disappear ok? !!`.
`sis where should I disappear? So the offer is still valid. Maybe come with us tonight. I swear I will bring ya back home if you get drunk haha !!
everything disappears seeing through someone like an old webcam someone fell asleep at the keyboard playing music flashing screensaver. then follows the departure from Rigas airport. White clouds through the plane's window look calm and peaceful..
Bianka ?? am I now Bianka or how ??

Now you are finally you again, no you are not me nor am I you !! you are who you are !!!
I am who I am. MeriDi raises her right hand to the sun and, as if greeting it, tightens and folds fingers in her fist.
After collecting the hatched eggs from the nest and how posible much gater a tree leaf tangled in the pockets, so prepared she jumps into the water.
Never liked swimming, where it was more full of pockets and eggs in hands and mouth.
The only pleasure from such activity is a slight cooling due to the thermodynamics of the water.
The Bianka`s generator requires its own by increasing the total blood pressure and heart rate it seems to be controlled somewhere on its own. You can only get comfortable with such improvements over time, if it is possible to get comfortable at all. I hope It will not be as bad as with the Serpents Wings, where it was easier to break them in case something goes wrong, where the Bianka`s generator is entangled in the heart.
being finally ashore on a normal mainland, she must understood how and where to go, as if the place directions at first glimpse feels
familiar, however, something is very different. Most logical explanation is: With the next iteration of reality, more or less differences caused by the previous reality collapse and fluctuations of the universe affecting more or less the space-time is possible.
The information brought by the insect is at least clear about the closest surroundings
n overall area.
Obviously nothing great here to do so will not think too much and choose simply go to the river and and then down by river until reach the Sea.
Hopefully not it will not get too long.
MeriDi swallows the egg that was in her mouth, the others inserted in a pile of leaves, for travel effectiveness she tears both sleeves and creates a simple puddle.

The desert crater terrain is slowly transformed into a green paradise scene seen somewhere near the rainforest. But unfortunately those forests are still 5 km away and this new skyline feature is just starting to play an increasingly important role on the horizon !!

MeriDi studies the trajectory of the movement of the sky and the sun.
I will normalize the whole latitude longitude and time ratio, it would be easier and more energy efficient to
perform calculations in this way.
Atm its clock is 0.25 by now !!! I'm… it still can't be said to have to travel a longer distance !!!
Between the unbearably already screaming birds and the cries of an insects stuck in a demonic cacophony, I somehow inbetween it kinda hear a pleasant white noise as the river
speaks to me.
Yeah It's a river !!! or at least what will soon be a river !!!
I need something faster than K2…

...to be continued.
