**MY ARTICLE ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE**

More than rapes, car accidents, and muggings combined, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women. I have decided to write this article in hopes that it will help increase awareness. As a survivor of severe domestic abuse, I hope that one day I will be able to say I made a difference. Although domestic violence can happen to anyone, it is most often a women's issue.
A shocking three women per day are killed by their husbands or boyfriends. These statistics are heart-breaking and the only way to combat the issue is to NOT turn our backs when we see certain situations occur! It is often said that you should never get involved in others' relationships, however, this situation is an exception. When it comes to witnessing domestic violence, it is our duty to call the police and report the abuse or try to help the victim. When we stand by and watch it happen, we are just as bad as the abuser!
Domestic violence is a learned pattern of behavior that is, in most cases, passed down through generations. Adult male children of men who battered their wife are twice as likely to become a wife-beater themselves!! These men generally have deeply held beliefs regarding masculinity and what it means to be a man. However, men who abuse their female partners are doing so because they feel inferior. In lament's terms: the batterer is a coward!
Domestic violence is the use of intimidation from one partner in order to control the other. It is often delivered in a pattern. Generally speaking, the abuser will find something on which to blame the abusive behavior. For example:
"Today is the anniversary of my grandpop's death. I'm just really stressed out and I'm so sorry. It'll never happen again!"
They will often times blame it on the victim herself! Often times, it is the victim who ends up apologizing to the abuser when its all said and done. For example:
*Joseph & *Mary are in their bed watching a movie. Joseph drops the remote & Mary jokingly says, "Now look what you did, ya dummy!" Joseoh slaps her across the face causing the onset of a black eye. Mary begins to cry. For a few mins he ignores her sobs as she lays there rocking, trying to comfort herself. She waits for him to comfort her but he does nothing but continue to sit and watch the TV. This is psychologically abusive and we will get to that in just a few. When he finally comes around he says, "I'm sorry babe. Sometimes you just make me so angry that I can't control myself!" Mary replies, "I'm sorry. I was only joking." She strokes his hair giving him the comfort that really she needs.
Now, do you see what's wrong with this picture? Not only has he physically hit her but he has brainwashed his gf into believing it was her fault and she ends up apologizing for it! DV isn't always physical in nature. As a matter of fact, emotional and mental abuse can be worse than physical! Reconsider the above scenario. While Mary is crying all she wants is to be comforted. He makes her wait and this hurts her even more than when he struck her. This causes her to believe it's her fault.
No matter the situation, no one deserves to be abused! If you are unsure if you are being abused, you can visit:
