Wiccan Theory of Creation

This is only one theory. There are probably as many theories as there are Wiccans. This just happens to be the one I like the best.

Before there was time, there was The One. All were created from The One, and from all was The One created. In the vast emptiness of the universe, space began to move.

The One was split into Two forms, equal in energy, but opposite in form. One became The Goddess and the other, The God. The Goddess and God were thankful for their creation, but were lonely, for they lived only in the dark emptiness of space.

So they pulled together their energy, and turned it into gases and then turned these gases into planets, suns, and moons. They were so happy with their creation that they rejoiced and were merry and were unified.

From that union, came all life, and humans were created to be one upon the earth to achieve incarnation. The Goddess and God watched over their creation and decided to each take a position, where they could each watch over all sides of the earth, day and night.

The Goddess surrounded the moon, and The God surrounded the Sun. They took these symbols to watch over the life they had created, and so that humans would be reminded of Them.

All enter the circle of life. We are born, we live, we die, and are born again. All throughout the energies of the earth, under the Sun and the Moon, we are the circle of life.

The Circle is Open yet Unbroken. We all come from The One, and to The One shall return.

Council Principles

1. We practice Rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces marked by the phases of the moon and the seasonal quarters and cross quarters.

2. We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment. We seek to live in harmony with Nature, in ecological balance offering fulfillment.

3. We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than is apparent to the average person. Because it is far greater than ordinary, it is sometimes called "supernatural," but we see it as lying within that which is naturally potential to all.

4. We conceive of the creative power of the Universe as manifesting through polarity - as masculine and feminine - and believe that this same creative power lives in all people and functions through the interaction of the masculine and feminine. We value neither above the other, knowing each to be supportive of the other. We value sex as pleasure, as the symbol and embodiment of life, and as one of the sources of energies used in magical practice and religious worship.

5. We recognize both outer worlds and inner, or psychological, worlds - sometimes known as the spiritual world, the collective unconsciousness, the Inner Planes, etc. - and we see in the interaction of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal phenomena and magickal exercises. We neglect neither dimension for the other, seeing both as necessary for our fulfillment.

6. We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy, but do honor those who teach, respect those who share their greater knowledge and wisdom, and acknowledge those who have courageously given of themselves in leadership.

7. We see religion, magick, and wisdom-in-living as being united in the way one views the world and lives within it - a worldview and philosophy of life that we identify as Witchcraft, the Wiccan Way.

8. Calling oneself a "witch" does not make a Witch - but neither does heredity itself, or the collecting of titles, degrees, and initiations. A Witch seeks to control the forces within him/herself that make life possible in order to live wisely and well, without harm to others, and in harmony with Nature.

9. We acknowledge that it is the affirmation and fulfillment of life, in a continuation of evolution and development of consciousness, that gives meaning to the Universe we know and to our personal role within it.

10. Our only animosity toward Christianity, or toward any other religion or philosophy of life, is to the extent that its institutions have claimed to be "the only way" and have sought to deny freedom to others and to suppress other ways of religious practice and belief.

11. As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the history of the Craft, the origins of various terms, or the legitimacy of various aspects of different traditions. We are concerned with our present and our future.

12. We do not accept the concept of "absolute evil," nor do we worship any entity known as "Satan" or "the devil," as defined by the Christian tradition. We do not seek power through the suffering of others, nor do we accept the concept that personal benefit can only be derived from denial to another.

13. We acknowledge that we seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.

The Sabbats

There are eight Sabbats. Four of them are Greater Sabbats: Samhain (SOW-wen), Imbolc (IM-bolk), Beltane (BEL-tayne), and Lughnassad (LOO-nus-uh), also called Lammas. There are also four Lesser Sabbats: Yule, Ostara (oh-STAR-ah), Summer Solstice and Mabon (MAY-bon).

Samhain (October 31)

Samhain is the end of the agricultural year and the beginning of the Celtic year. Celebrations to honor the dead are held on this night. This is also the night when the veil between the living and dead is said to be at its thinnest. Therefore, communication with spirits, divination and scrying are best undertaken during this time.

On a personal level this is a time to rest and reflect on life and your goals. It is the time to get rid of negativity that may stand in the way of future progress.

Symbols and Colors: Pomegranates, apples, pumpkins, cauldron, corn stalks, photos of ancestors, black altar cloth and black or red candles.

Yule (Winter Solstice, around December 21)

Yule is the longest night and the shortest day of the year. It is seen as the rebirth of the Sun God. Fires are lit to welcome the Sun's returning light. A yule log is sometimes burned on this night, with a portion of the log saved each year to light the next years log, symbolizing the rebirth of the Sun God.

On a personal level Yule is a time to begin thinking about what you hope to accomplish in the months to come.

Symbols and Colors: Yule log, cauldron, mistletoe, Yule tree, poinsettia plants, evergreens, red altar clothes and red or green candles.

Imbolc (February 2)

Imbolc is the festival of lights and the celebration of the renewed fertility of Earth. It is celebrated with fires and lit candles. It's a traditional time for covens to initiate new members or for others to do self-dedications.

On a personal level Imbolc is a time to prepare for what you want to accomplish in the months ahead.

Symbols and Colors: Bridget's cross, crown of candles, white flowers, seeds, white, silver or pink altar cloths and white candles.

Ostara (Spring Equinox, around March 21)

Ostara is the Spring Equinox and is the first day of spring. Fertility abounds. It is a time for beginnings. There is balance between the masculine and feminine forces in nature.

On a personal level it is a time to physically and symbolically plant the seeds of what you desire.

Symbols and Colors: eggs, seeds, lilac altar cloth and scented candle.

Beltane (April 30)

Beltane is mainly a fire and fertility festival. The major symbols of this holiday are the Maypole and the cauldron. The Maypole is a phallic symbol, which has seven colored ribbons, tied to it. As the people dance around the Maypole they weave the ribbons around it.

On a personal level this is the time to actively pursue your goals.

Symbols and Colors: Maypole, cauldron, candles, crown of flowers, green altar cloth and candles.

Midsummer (Summer Solstice, around June 21)

Midsummer is the longest day and shortest night. In the past bonfires were a way of celebrating and promoting purification, fertility and love. It is said that one custom of our ancestors was jumping over the fire during this holiday. It was believed that the higher one jumped, the higher the crops would grow.

On a personal level it is a time to nurture goals and efforts.

Symbols and Colors: floating candles, bonfires, a wheel tied with colored ribbons, bright yellow altar cloth and candles.

Lughnasadh (August 1)

Lughnasadh is also known as Lammas. Corn is a big part of rituals at this time. It is the beginning of the harvest and it is a tradition to break bread on this day.

On a personal level, as with the harvest, the fruits of your efforts should start to be evident and you should continue working toward them.

Symbols and Colors: corn, bread, baked goods, brooms, gold colored altar cloth and candles.

Mabon (Autumnal Equinox, around September 21)

Mabon is the second harvest. It is a time to give thanks for all we have and also a time to make sure we keep all that we have gained.

On a personal level give thanks for all you've accomplished and ask for the ability to hold on to it.

Symbols and Colors: corn baba, apples, cornucopias, cauldron, orange-red altar cloth and orange or red candles.

The Wiccan Rede

Bide the Wiccan laws ye must,
In perfect love and perfect trust.

Live and let live,
Fairly take and fairly give.

Cast the Circle thrice about,
To keep unwelcome spirits out.

To bind the spell every time,
Let the spell be spake in rhyme.

Soft of eye and light of touch,
Speak little, listen much.

Deosil go by the waxing Moon,
Chanting out the Witches rune.

Widdershins go by the waning Moon,
Chanting out the baneful rune.

When the Lady's Moon is new,
Kiss thy hand to her, times two.

When the Moon rides at her peak,
Then your heart's desire seek.

Heed the North wind's mighty gale,
Lock the door and drop the sail.

When the wind comes from the South,
Love will kiss thee on thy mouth.

When the wind blows from the West,
Departed souls will have no rest.

When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go,
Burn them fast and burn them slow.

Elder be thy Lady's tree,
Burn it not or cursed you'll be.

When the Wheel begins to turn,
Let the Beltane fires burn.

When the Wheel has turned to Yule,
Light the Log and the Horned One rules.

Heed ye flower, bush and tree,
By the Lady blessed be.

Where the rippling waters go,
Cast a stone and truth you'll know.

When ye have a true need,
Hearken not to other's greed.

With a fool no season spend,
Lest ye be counted as his friend.

Merry meet and merry part,
Bright the cheeks and warm the heart.

Mind the Threefold Law you should,
Three times bad and three times good.

When misfortune is enow,
Wear the blue star on thy brow.

True in love ever be,
Lest thy lover's false to thee.

These eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill,
An ye harm none, do what ye will.

The Law of the Power

1. The Power shall not be used to bring harm, to injure or control others. But if the need arises, the Power shall be used to protect your life or the lives of others.

2. The Power is used only as need dictates.

3. The Power can be used for your own gain, as long as by doing so you harm none.

4. It is unwise to accept money for use of the Power, for it quickly controls its taker. Be not as those of other religions.

5. Use not the Power for prideful gain, for such cheapens the mysteries of Wicca and magick.

6. Ever remember that the Power is the sacred gift of the Goddess and God, and should never be misused or abused.

7. And this is the Law of the Power.

The Laws

1. We are of the Old Ways, among those who walk with the Goddess and God and receive Their love.

2. Keep the Sabbats and Esbats to the best of your abilities, for to do otherwise is to lessen your connections with the Goddess and God.

3. Harm none. This, the oldest law, is not open to interpretation or change.

4. Shed not blood in ritual; the Goddess and God need not blood to be duly worshipped.

5. Those of our way are kind to all creatures, for hurtful thoughts are quite draining and aren't worth the loss of energy. Misery is self-created; so, too, is joy, so create joy and disdain misery and unhappiness. And this is within your power. So harm not.

6. Teach only what you know, to the best of your ability, to those students whom you choose, but teach not to those who would use your instructions for destruction or control. Also, teach not to boost pride, for ever remember: she who teaches for vain-glory shall take little pride in her handiwork; she who teaches out of love shall be enfolded in the arms of the Goddess and God.

7. Ever remember that if you would be of our way, keep the Law close to your heart, for it is the nature of the Wicca to keep the Law.

8. If ever the need arises, any law may be changed or discarded, and new laws written to replace them, so long as the new laws don't break the oldest of all: harm none.

9. Blessings of the God and Goddess on us all.
