Well, comparing the rating I have now to the rating I had before I updated this thing, apparently straight and to the point was even worse than I had imagined. Having already jumped through your metaphorical hoops to provide a more interesting and ADD-friendly profile for your enjoyment, I now continue in my quest for a more worthy profile. I have finished for now, but one day I shall return, and the updatage shall be mighty. Till then, enjoy.
About me
First and foremost, I'd like to say that I am now, who I have always been. Self-possessed, discerning, and too smart for my own good, I ask questions that no one wants to answer. I engage in discussions because I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. In bygone days I would have been a philosopher and spent all my time reading and debating with a group of scholars. But unfortunately that's no longer a viable career choice, so I settle for spending my spare time on the Internet, doing the same thing.
Physically, I'm black, of average height and weight, with long hair. I have no bodily modifications to speak of. That is to say, I have no piercings, tattoos, hair colouring, or anything else of that nature. I see no reason to express myself visually when I can do so verbally in a way that will more accurately represent my personality. That said, I do seem to have a 'signature look' which tends to involve a vague sense of professionalism and a beret.
My current age is 20, though I neither look, nor act my age. I find that most people my age seem to look and act like idiots, so that shouldn't be a big surprise. Actually, I often find myself feeling old. I always believed that when you could honestly say that in your day, music was better, gas was cheaper, and kids were more polite it was time to find yourself a rocking chair and start knitting. I expect to finish my scarf early next week.
Interesting things
Interesting things about myself? I really do knit. I actually like kids, but I always forget that until I'm put in close contact with them, when they flock to me like seagulls on a sandwich. I read insatiably, and I have done so since I was a child. It took my mother a few years to realize this so, having no books of my own, I read all of hers. I've always wanted a green newt for a pet, but no pet stores in my area carry them. I choose odd names for pets I buy. I had a toad named Humphrey, a salamander named Curtis, three rats named Atticus, Crispin, and Lucius-Marius, a goldfish named Winston, and a turtle called Greybeard. I know more about "Harry Potter" than you do. I play D&D, I will own you at Risk, and I've never lost a game of strip-anything. I am obsessed with the 18th Century. I feel that society reached almost to it's peak in the 18th century and has yet to return to it's former glory. I dislike almost all modern art with a sort of virulent hatred.
What I do when I'm not here
I entertain myself with a variety of media. For books I like historical fiction, mystery, science fiction, and fantasy for fun, biographies, textbooks, and topical research for information, and poetry, and quote-books for relaxation. Some of my favourite authors are Guy Gavriel Kay, Oscar Wilde, Piers Anthony, George Orwell, Neil Gaiman, Ann McCaffery, Alfred Hitchcock, Anthony Burgess, and Leo Tolstoy. H.P. Lovecraft is the only horror author I respect. He is also the only person in the world who can give me the heeby-jeebies. I enjoy Poe, not for his dark themes, but for his mastery of rhyme and meter. I am completely unable to use these effectively in my poems, and admire his aptitude.
I like every type of music, but the content has an effect on whether I enjoy a particular song. I specifically enjoy classic rock, techno, Fifties music, swing, J-rock, J-pop, classical, heavy metal, and folk songs. Bands I enjoy are Dir en Grey, Antique Café, Yum!Yum!ORANGE, Green Day, Nirvana, AC/DC, Prozzac, Queen, The Supremes, and Fool's Garden. I love Elliot Smith, I like Alanis Morrisette, and I can't get enough Weird Al.
I watch a bit of tv, a lot of anime, and not many movies. I read manga, go to conventions, play some video games, and like to use my sewing machine. I like to write, and I try to draw. I spend most of my online time posting to forums. When I'm out of the house, I get my exercise playing DDR (I freestyle on Light), walking out in the woods, riding my bike, and having random 'sword' fights with my friends. When I'm bored, I find ways entertain myself. As you can see, I am not just a geek, I am Geek².
Other things
I have an odd collection of friends. The only thing we all have in common is that we all like to talk about anything and everything. We have liberals, conservatives, hunters, vegetarian PETA affiliates, Christians, atheists, revolutionaries, geeks, nerds, goths, and 'cool kids', among others. I am the current 'leader' of this group, and the most eccentric one there.
I'm fairly well-read, wittily sarcastic, and find modesty to be the last refuge of the incompetent. My only true fear is that I might one day descend to the levels of stupidity that I see on an every day basis. I am open-minded, and I always try to see the other side of an argument, even if I don't agree with it. I think everyone has the right to do what suits them best, provided it does not overly conflict with other peoples well-being. I dislike people who attempt to force their beliefs on other people, because it is a sign of insecurity and they are inevitably unable to support their views. I don't expect people not to label me. I know it's going to happen, so I prefer to simply give enough information for the label to be accurate.
I was raised using the English language, therefore I make every attempt to use it correctly. In fact, I pride myself on the ability to use grammar and complete sentences to express myself, unlike so many of my peers who seem unable to even use complete words. I tend not to chatter excessively, but I thrive on discussion, and could spend hours talking about nearly anything, so long as it was interesting. I can sometimes go on scathing rants but seldom intend any actual insult to anybody. When I do, you'll know. In reality, I play the Devil's advocate just for the joy of arguing a point.
That is not all the information I could give on myself. It is what I thought was most pertinent and interesting to the people here. If I find I need to add to it again later, I will do so. But for now, I certainly hope it was enough to appease your voyeuristic desire to know more of the delicious inner-workings of my life.
