"Music is what feelings sound like" Author Unknown

Welcome to my profile. It is dedicated to my love of Gothic Rock. Not only do I love the music itself, but I find the origins fascinating as well. There are so many great bands that I couldn't begin to list them all here. I will not attempt to give you a list of my favorite bands either because that list would be too long. I also do not provide any personal information on my profile page itself. If you would like to know more about me, I have chosen to put that in my portfolio. I am generally an easy going person. So if you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

Gothic Rock

Although goth rock is said to have it's beginnings in the post punk era of the late 1970's in England, "The Marble Index" album by Nico in 1969 was likely the first goth album. Several other early key influences included, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music, T. Rex and Lou Reed. Their music and style which included bondage gear, vampire inspired attire and heavy black eye liner inspired the modern goth era.

In the late 70's four of the most influential bands often referred to as "batcave", "protogoth" or "firstwave" included Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, and Joy Division. These bands fused a dark, morose music with romanticism to give their music it's mysterious, theatrical qualities.

Bauhaus

The Batcave was a London nightclub that became the heart and home of many great gothic artists including Bauhaus, The Cure, Alien Sex Fiend, and many more.

The next wave or "first wave" in the 80's and 90's began adding less elements of punk and adding more elements of rock music. The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, and Field of Nephilim, or "The Big Three" had a striking impact. Vampires became very fashionable for bands during this era.

The Sisters of Mercy

The "Second Wave" came in the late 80's to late 90's. It evolved with deep base guitar, synthesized strings, and even harpsichords and organs. Vampire attire was again very popular during this period for goth bands. The english group, Rosetta Stone is pretty much considered to have ruled this period of goth rock. The english band Nosferatu not only gave themselves a vampire name, they also embraced vampire attire and lyrics and drove to shows in a hearse. A few of the other great bands during this era include Love Like Blood, Garden of Delight, Children on Stun, Dronning Maud Land, and Dreadful Shadow.

The Witch, Rosetta Stone

During the modern age of goth rock bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson with their gothic attire took center stage. Because they attributed themselves to Goth rock, at least in the US, it turned more to shock value, and teenage rebellion.

There are other bands in the modern age that have stayed closer to their origins. Although some say that the true Gothic rock has gone underground. it is actually still thriving in some places including England, Spain, Greece and Gemany. Bands that are still doing well in Europe include, The Daughters of Bristol, Reptyle, Star Industry, The Eden House, Merciful Nuns and Dreamtime to name a few.
