Every second of every day, an animal dies in a U.S. laboratory.

Please Stop Vivisection...Vivisection is the cutting into or dissecting of a live animal.

animal experimentation is scientific and medical fraud...

We Kill To Cure With Cures That Kill

Examples of Animal Experiments Funded by Tax-payers:

`To study the results of head trauma, primates were strapped into machinery to receive high-impact blows to the head. A videocamera captured footage of vivisectionists taunting the injured animals, who were left with severe brain damage. (University of Pennsylvania)

`To examine severe burns on live tissue, restrained pigs were burned alive with a flamethrower until their charred flesh could be removed in large pieces. (U.S. Army)

`To measure injury recovery, vivisectionists strapped dogs down and cut apart the skin on their knees, leaving flaps. At the end of the study, all of the dogs were killed. (Uniformed Services University-Department of Defense)

`To demonstrate that the eye's protein levels are the same in sight deprived monkeys compared to normal ones, animal experimenters sewed the monkeys' eyelids shut. (Emory University, NIH project P51 RROO165-38)

www.irishantivivisection.org

"The question is not, Can they reason? nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?"
-Philosopher Jeremy Bentham

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Vivisection is the blackest of all crimes that man is at present committing against God and his fair creation."
-Mahatma Gandhi

DID YOU KNOW?
Thousands of animals are suffering
in Irish laboratories right now

Most people are very surprised to learn that animals are routinely used and killed in laboratories around Ireland. People are very concerned when they hear that experiments are conducted in this country on dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and pigs as well as the most commonly used rats and mice.

Over 52,000 animals were used for vivisection in Irish laboratories in 2002. The Department of Health publish the Animal Procedures Statistics each year which gives a breakdown of the species and numbers of animals used in experiments in Ireland. However, thousands more animals are bred and killed simply because they are surplus to requirement, or were the wrong sex or genetic make up for a particular experiment. The Department of Health does not collect information about these animals or publish the number of animals involved. We therefore cannot determine the total number of animals dying each year due to vivisection in Ireland.

Worldwide it is calculated that 20,000 animals die every hour in laboratories.

The IAVS campaigns peacefully for the law to be changed so that all animal experiments will be abolished.

A ban on all experiments on animals is unlikely to be won in the short term due to the powerful prevailing views of science, industry and governments worldwide. It is therefore vital that the IAVS strongly opposes animal experiments on both moral and scientific grounds while promoting scientific research and testing methods that do not involve animals.

If you agree that it is wrong to use animals in experiments please join the IAVS.
We are member of the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments and are part of a Europe-wide campaign to end vivisection.

IRISH FACTS
It is estimated that up to 50 million animals are used in research each year worldwide.
In Ireland alone 52,203 animals were used in research in 2002.

“Ever since puberty, I have believed in the value of two things: kindness and clear thinking. At first these two remained more or less distinct; when I felt triumphant I believed most in clear thinking, and in the opposite mood I believed most in kindness. Gradually, the two have come more and more together in my feelings. I find that much unclear thought exists as an excuse for cruelty and that much cruelty is prompted by superstitious beliefs.” - Bertrand Russell, British philosopher and mathematician (1872-1970)

Cruelty-Free Giving — What to Know
A man in his 80s who dearly loves animals decides that it's time to make out his will. He bequeaths $2,000 to an organization working towards eliminating vivisection. He also bequeaths $2,000 to the American Cancer Society in hopes they will soon eliminate cancer. What is the real value of his bequest?

Answer: Zero or less than zero.

The problem is his lack of knowledge about the American Cancer Society. Without knowing it, he has negated his wish to help eliminate vivisection, because the American Cancer Society funds animal experiments. Also, he has unknowingly detracted from his goal of eliminating cancer, because vivisection does not help prevent or treat human cancer. Therefore, the value of his heartfelt and generous bequest amounts to nothing.
