If there is such a thing as destiny, mine has been to witness the death of humanity's soul.

I was born into a small family many aeons ago in a small settlement on an island that later became England - near the town of Tavistoke, which is now called Tavistock.

I was turned not 23 years later, at the beginning of that winter.

I thank whatever powers that might be that those aeons have washed away the memories following my passing into eternal life, for they are grim to say the least.

I have watched humanity abandon the forests and its ways, watched as they left the Garden.

Watched them tame the plants and the animals. They thought themselves so clever, those first ones.

I and perhaps 10 others know what it is to have lost a place to belong... the further away humans get from the earth and home, the more lost and miserable they have become.

I watched when the men came from sea with their ships and bronze swords, enslaved or killed my ancestors, and tamed the plants and the animals.

I watched the Romans come, and the men from the north lands after them. They cut down the trees, killed the forests. They forgot what it meant to belong. They spawned a thousand times their number, living in ever-bigger towns in buildings that grew ever bigger and taller, choking the sky.

I have watched Gods born and Gods die, too numerous to recount. I myself have been one, more than once.

Why have a lead so long a life? It is the life and the blood and the soft scent of skin, the yielding of the little doe-like soul in that final moment that sustains me. It is changeless as the forest once seemed. Perhaps it is not all that I want, but it is everything I need.
