The following information is given as a basic reference for survival under conditions relative to the Continental U.S.

For any of you that are survivalists you already know the drill. For those of you that are new to the skill welcome to reality and the new U.S.A.

Now in the U.S. conditions vary, and those who will be hit the hardest are individuals living in the big cities, especially the coastal cities.

Putting together a basic kit regardless of where you live will vary with items and their usefulness. A fishing kit for instance might not seem like it would be useful to someone living in the high desert, but you would be surprised.

So here is a basic SK for all.

A. Knapsack (easy means of transport)

1. Survival knife - If you can not afford to spend money on a knife sold in stores then simply take the sharpest knife you have in your home (I like sharp...plus it saves time) It can be a simple kitchen knife no more that 7 inches long with a strong blade. You can possibly buy one at a store that sells knives for under $10.00. You have the option of removing the handle if it's plastic or simply wrapping electricians tape around the handle (wrap tight) at least 3 complete rounds, and then wrapping Duct Tape (in narrow strips about 1 inch wide) for the same amount of rounds (3) You will also need a sharpening stone to keep the blade sharp. These can be purchased on line, possibly at the same store you would buy the knife, and also a small bottle of oil 3 in 1 oil is decent but you can also use water. Some oils will affect the blade, 3 in 1 works well if you wish to use oil. The blade must be sharp if you intend to skin an animal or to cut through meat of any type. You might decide to carry more than one knife in your SK, all well and good, just decide what you will use them for…defense, skinning, etc..etc..Now I’ve simply put the basic here for a knife. If you purchase a knife at a store where they sell oil, and you wish to purchase a small bottle, make sure it’s for that type of metal that the blade is made from.

2. Compass – There are many different styles of compasses on the market and each one serves a purpose. If you can, try to get a hold of 2 types. A. Pathfinder Compass/b. Lensatic compass. The Lensatic compass is an excellent compass for determining bearings from one point on the ground to another on the ground. Although it can be used for map work the pathfinder compass is better suited for the job. Also a topographic map of the area(s) you will be in is helpful when navigating and using the compass. Ways of using a compass can be found on line or you can go to the library and collect the information.

3. Binoculars – a decent pair of binoculars will help greatly. Nothing too big, a compact 10x23 is perfect.

4. First aid kit – a lifeline First aid 4052 29 piece ultralight survival kit goes for about $11.00. it’s a great basic kit that you can build on by adding extra bandages, wraps, meds etc etc if you want to. Don’t forget the aspirin.

5. Waterproof matches & or fire starter – the uco stormproof match kit runs about $5/$6.00 – fire starters run a little more about $12.00 (Aurora fire starter 440c)

6. Machete – yes a machete. I didn’t include this in with the knife for a reason. The machete is a very diverse tool/weapon, yes even if you live in the city. It has a far reach (weapon) and can clear a path (tool) You can also use it to cut up your meat into chunks. Machetes vary in price anywhere from $10.00 to $40.00. A gil hibbin 5007 iv combat machete can go for about $30/$35.00. a smith & Wesson guide master for about $18.00 they are both 18 inch blades, the gil hibbin being ¾ inches longer.

7. Seeds – Yes I’m sure this sounds funny to some of you and to others you may have never have heard of seeds in a survival Kit. You have no idea how long you will be in a survival situation outside of where you used to live…city, town, village etc…etc…so seeds are actually a good idea if you find a shelter and decide to build on it. Try to find seeds that are not genetically altered (Non GMO Seeds) You can collect these seeds from dozens of sources on line or possibly at a local grocery store/feed store/or home depot. Tomatoes, onions, carrots, cucumbers, squash, radishes, strawberries, corn, peas, you can add as you like making sure you get you vitamins in what you plant.

8. Soap – Yes soap. It has numerous uses not just for washing. A plain bar of ivory soap is probably best you don’t want to attract any wild animals (especially bees) by using a scented soap. One bar should do the job.

9. Hand sanitizer – there are many different modes or packaging for this type of item and you should have a least two types. One you can carry in an area that is readily accessible and the other you can carry in the medical kit.

10. Alcohol – you can use alcohol to disinfect a wound as well…but getting away from Hollywood and their idea of hardcore…you can use rubbing alcohol so carry a small plastic bottle of it in your med kit. You can also use an alcohol called everclear 190 that’s about 95% alcohol, it can be used in a pinch when necessary. Again hit the library and take notes. Also remember you’re supposed to be traveling light so work out your back pack weight accordingly. In other words you don’t need to carry a big bottle of everclear 190 with you.

11. Flares – flares are always a good idea and 4 is a good number to carry along. You can wrap them in a towel to keep the dry, a thin towel is best and you can also use the towel as needed.

12. Zip lock bags – you will be surprised at the uses for these

13. Condoms – get your mind out the gutter…but yes if you’re traveling with a partner a condom is a good idea, a very good idea for numerous reasons use you imagination as to why!!!!!! But my reasoning is that it is a good sealed package…waterproof and can be utilized in a number of ways…make sure they are plain condoms without lubricant for any utilization. Keep the condoms in the med kit…not in your wallet guys!!!!!!!

14. Important papers and id’s – keep these in a waterproof zip lock if you have to. You don’t need to travel with your paid or unpaid bills!!! Birth certificate, social security card, drivers license, any other forms of id that are necessary. Forget the credit cards the world has just gone to shit you don’t need them. However it is advisable that you carry some cash just in case also in a zip lock. Gold and silver wouldn’t hurt either. If you have to bug out of an area quickly remember this survival pack should already be ready for a snatch and run. Cash may still carry value depending upon where you go, gold and silver always will. Jewelry doesn’t hurt either as a barter tool. Do not wear it while bugging out or while in survival mode.

15. Clothing – you have to dress for the environment. If you wind up having to bug out in the summer time and travel across country from a city you have to remember summer city nights are going to be different from summer wilderness nights. You should have at least two pairs of heavy wool socks or heavy cotton socks. Long johns will help as well (thermals) a survival blanket is a must and you would be surprised how inexpensive they are. Check out the internet or a camping store. Sheels, cabelas, etc…etc…military black wool sweaters like the navy squids wear…ok sorry guys it’s a jarhead habit…anyway those sweaters are perfect for utilizing in cooler weather. Also a lined wind breaker, thermal gloves, and a watch cap…skull cap will help. Now these items may seem a bit bulky and in truth they do take up a little room but not much. So try to incorporate a knapsack that will be able to hold all the items listed here. It will not be as heavy as you think. As you move along through areas you may be able to obtain other items as needed.

16. Footwear – boots are always a good idea and a good pair of hiking sneakers is a help but not a long term good idea. The rubber will wear out faster on sneakers than will the hard rubber of a boot. The boots are your choice, do a little research on what you may need. Remember if you’re bugging out from a city like new york and traveling upstate by foot you’re going to need boots that can handle both black top and rugged mountains.

17. Sunglasses/goggles – your choice but get something that will keep your eyes safe, get something a bit more rugged than the Walgreen/walmart sunglass rack offers you. Also in this category you will need some form of goggles that are not bulky, remember space is a rare thing when bugging out and the more space you have the more you can pack that is necessary. Goggles can help in snow keeping you from going blind from the white and thy can also help in windy conditions when dirt is blowing around.

18. Watch – doesn’t matter if it’s digital or analog just as long as it keeps time. Keep extra batteries along in a ziplock.

19. Flashlights/candles – flashlights are always a help for many reasons. The military type flashlight is a pretty good deal. Remember batteries, and only use the flashlight when needed. Candles are also a big help you can utilize them for many situations, keep in a ziplock.

The following web site (See at Bottom- NSC) is only being given as an aid. You can browse through it get ideas or purchase products. Also remember you can not do this on your own unless you’ve lived that life already and even then team work is essential. Lone wolfs usually get their asses handed to them eventually. Remember Rambo was just a movie. Again unless you’ve actually been balls to the wall don’t travel alone. Share the burden, the journey, and the rest of your lives in harmony and peace. Do for each other.

Weapon recommendations – 22 caliber survival rilfe. A rifle that will break down but can quickly be put together for use on small game. Search the internet an ar-7 is a pretty decent survival rifle. If you live in an area where you can legally purchase a rifle try to buy a used one (.22 cal) the brand new ones can be expensive. How you obtain your weapons is your business, remember you’re trying to survive no one is looking out for you but you or your partner again working together as a team is essential.

Air rifles – either a .177 or a .22 air rifle at or in excess of 1000fps is also a help and even a necessity. Don’t forget the pellets there are numerous types of pellets including hollow tips on the market.

Large caliber rifle – if you’re in an are where there is large wild game it would be advisable to bring along a good rifle. A .223 can get the job done but in all reality you’re not trying to piss off the animal you’re trying to kill it for food. So unless you’re a marksman and know what you’re doing with a caliber like the .223, you should think about a .308 at the minimum.
Again a used rifle is going to work just as well as a brand new one. And do not forget the cleaning kit for any of the rifles including the air rifles, remember those pellets are lead and leave a build up in the barrel especially at 1000 fps. Also for all of you city folk out there…take a hunting course!!!!!!

A good scope is also a must/ask a dealer for a scope that will go well with the rifle.

Shot guns – a 12 gauge is going to be your best friend in the backwoods. There are many shotguns on the market and again a used one is going to work just as well as a new one. Remington, Mossberg, they’re out there. Ammo varies, remember to ask questions some and this applies to rifles as well use regular rounds of that caliber unless it is specified in the rifle manual that the rifle or shotgun can handle match/magnum rounds. Ask the dealer what ammo works best. And you will also be surprised at the array of ammo that is sold. Everything from steel balls in the (O) series to sabot rounds, and flechette rounds and many other exotic rounds for the shotgun. You may have to hunt grouse or quail or geese or any other fowl so you need to proper ammo.

Bow and arrow – sure why not you can hunt large game with a proper bow and arrow and take out an enemy sentry….oh sorry lost it there for a minute…yes you can utilize the bow in a number of ways. What type of bow works…easy…the one that gets the job done. There are a number of bows out there and the science of the long bow is one to be well taken in and respected. Hell you can even make your own and save some cash, plus in making your own you will learn to respect the bow just as in making your own knife or in mastering the gun what ever type or caliber, you will learn that the tools you make or master will save your life and the lives of others. The zen of survival people.

These are just a few things essential to survival. You may/will also need salt tablets, water purification essentials…by that I mean either a kit or chemicals…study…ask questions….learn the only way you are going to survive is through your seeking of knowledge that you must pursue so that you will retain it because you are the one that has to survive if need be…on your own. No one will be there to hold our hand if things go wrong!!! Learn for yourself so that you may survive and possibly teach others.
