I have recieved alot of messages with questions regarding MMA and useful advice that I can offer so I am writting this article to do just that, I have been involved with MMA for years back when it first hit the scene and was bare knuckle, my cage name is The Night Train. I hold two black belts, one in Korean Style Taekwondo and one in American Style Taekwondo, I am equivalent to a Brown Belt in Muay Tai Kick Boxing aka The Sport of the King and I am cross trained in Brazilian JuJitsu, Wrestling and Golden Glove Boxing so my credentials speak for themselves. The first thing to remember is that a good defense is the best offense the objective is to not get hit, when mounting an offensive you always want to use the element of suprise this will keep your opponent guessing and off their A game, always lead the fight dont follow your opponents lead, you have to maintain control at all times this is critical, be aggressive, when you block strikes comming from your opponent always use as much force as possible to injure their limbs, bash the boney parts of the arms and legs make it unpleasant for them to aggress you it is psycological and when you attack always do as much damage as possible make every open opportunity worth your efforts and try to end the fight as quickly as possible, on average most street fights dont last longer then one minute, cage fights are another story, here we will discuss two schools of thought, on the street and in the Cage, some Disciplines will apply to both, when you are dealing with a good striker take them to the ground use a double leg take down, lift them up and use their own weight against them compounded with your own and remember gravity is your friend slam them to the ground as hard as you can and land on top of them, use your leverage, land primarly on their ribs or stomach and make sure they land solid and try to drive their head into the ground when they land, this is called a High Impact Slam, litereally try to drive them threw the ground, this will not only stun them it will knock the wind out of them and if they cant breath they will have no energy left to fight, if they do manage to absorb the impact attempt to move into the mounted position to surpass their guard and attempt to put them into submission with a choke, an arm bar or an ankle lock and if they are able to resist use manipulation of pressure points to weaken the resistance, chokes are the most effective, your opponent will not be able to breath and will tire out quickly trying to break free, use the Guillotine, Triangle Choke or the Rear Naked Choke, even grasping the Jugular and wind pipe in your hand and squeezing is effective, if they begin grabbing at your hands, wrists and arms soften them up with short choppy punches if you are laying across them and if you are setting up on top of them deliver solid punches to the face, most people make a common mistake on the ground when they are on the bottom they roll over on their stomach when trying to get away, they panic!, this is good when YOUR the one on top, they are completely helpless with their back to you, you can rain down punches to the back of the head or easly move to the choke, they will not be able to see what you are doing, this kind of mistake will end the fight quickly, if you end up on bottom put your opponent in the full or half guard, wrap your legs around their waste or leg and dont allow them to mount you, wait until they shift their weight and use a Bridge or similar move to throw them off balance and roll over on top of them to regain control, elbows and knees are also very effective on the ground often doing more damage then a punch if you are in a close quarters ground brawl, when you are fighting on the street use your surroundings to your advantage, slam them on stairs, a brick, concrete, ect. Pick up an object if you need to, use anything you can to your advantage, fight to WIN period! there is no honor in losing except good sportmanship. When in a situation were you are fighting on your feet and striking, watch your opponents eyes they often will shift and keep looking for the spot they think is open on your body, this is called telegraphing and gives away their whole tactic before its even attempted, posture and angles are a big factor when fighting on your feet, try to get inside your opponents defense, get them to lower their hands or get in between them so they cant defend effectively, use jabs to measure your distance and fake them out also circle them and try to attack them from the side that way you are outside of their defense and offence so always move to the left or right as quickly as possible using punch and kick combinations, when striking always try to hit your opponent in the same place over and over, such as the arms, legs, ribs, ect. pick a couple spots and work them this will wear your opponent down and cause them to make a mistake trying to protect their injury, when using kicks never try to go for a head shot unless your opponent is stunned or vulnerable, stick to leg hacks and body kicks, kick the inner and outter thighs, the shins the ribs and the knees, it take 5lbs of pressure from the front and 30lbs of pressure from the side to break the knee, dont use spinning kicks you will leave your backside open for a brief moment and that maybe all the time your opponent needs to gain control, use elbows, knees and head butts if your opponent tries to get inside your standing defense combinated with hooks and uppercuts, when it comes to punches try to target the sweet spots such as the temple, the eyes, the chin, the back of the head, behind the ear and best of all the nose, striking the nose will cause your opponents eyes to water making it hard to see and they will choke on their own blood making it hard to breath, work the body as well, punches to the chest, kidneys, ribs, stomach and just behind the ear, if your opponents legs begin to wabble or shake or their eyes roll back in their head or become glazed go for the knockout, finish them. It may sound funny but you can even tap your opponent out or severly weaken them with a finger lock or by breaking the finger, this is effective since the finger is one of the weakest parts of the body, if your opponent grabs you and you cant break free grab their thumb and bend it back this will break their grip, some good words of advice never ever underestimate your opponent and always have respect for them if not as a person then as someone who has the balls to stand across from you, a last word of advice is if you knock your opponent down and you want a quick finish then jump up in the air and land on their chest, ribs or stomach with both feet just be very careful doing this it can be a fatal move, remember also that power maybe good but speed kills, reaction time and speed are 10% physical and 90% mental, pace yourself and dont wear yourself down only go for the good openings, lead your opponent into opening his defenses.
You know there is alot more to it then this but this is a good solid foundation with years of experience backing it, I am older now, out of shape and overweight but dont let that fool you I am still an extremely dangerous opponent, I have had over 13 victories in the Cage and I have never lost a street fight who knows maybe my day will come, knowones unbeatable, have heart and always think on your toes, be smarter then your opponent, a smart fighter is a deadly fighter!
