The date was August 10th, 1861.
The location was 10 miles Southwest of modern day, Springfield, Missouri.
The Union soldiers numbering about 4000 strong
under the command of newly promoted
Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon.
Lyon had 4 brigades under him:
1st Commanded by Major Sturgis
2nd Commanded by Col. Frank Sigel
3rd Commanded by Lt Col. George Andrews
4th Commanded by Col. George Deitzler
Along with this Lyon had 3 batteries of
artillery. There was 6 guns in Tottens battery,
6 guns in Backoffs battery, and four guns
in the Dubois Battery.

Most of Lyons northerners were made
Up of local Missourians, Kansans, Iowans,
and Germans mostly in Sigels 2nd Brigade.

Lyon who was recently promoted was a
a hard fast Abolitionist from Connecticut,
recently stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
He was promoted via Congressman Francis
P Blair. Who happend to be Abe Lincolns post
Master generals brother Montgomery Blair.

The two met their opponents in the
Planters Hotel in St Louis Missouri 2 months
Before for a peaceful settlement. Ha!
No way when the States Governor Claiborne
Fox Jackson and Major General Sterling Price
were arguing.

"No way will I give into your Sessionitis,
you must leave at once as I declare War
and don't care if it kills all of you" and stormed
out of the meeting.
Price and Jackson high tailed it up the River to Booneville
Where the Southerners lost a minor skirmish.
They took all of the money out of the
State Treasury and headed to the Southwest
Corner of the State.
There Claiborne relinquished command to
Price.
Price had about double the men of Lyon
But they were poorly armed and trained
However they had a cause. Price offered
Overall command to a Texas Ranger
Benjamin McCulloch assisted by Arkansas
Brigadier N. Bartlett Pierce.

Together with all of these the Missouri
State Guard under Price, the Texans, Arkansas
Under Pierce as well as 4 batteries of
Artillery (Guibors, Bledsoe, Reid's, Polaski)
the Southerners encamped out numbered
their surprise attackers almost 3 to 1
11,000 versus 4,000 and the element of
Surprise.

What will happen on the very early morning
Of the 10th as Lyons men set out to make
The overnight March? Stay tuned!!!!!
