With its high-interest subject and conversational tone, this title in the new Monster Chronicles series is a candidate for reluctant as well as strong readers. Veteran writer Krensky introduces vampire habits and history, based on folklore and legends across cultures. Later chapters address historical reports of vampire attacks, famous fictional vampires, real-life suspects, and vampires' enduring popularity. Some readers will find Krensky's glibness a little off-putting, and because he plays up the spine-tingling effects with comments implying vampires are real and on the loose, the book may be a problematic choice for school projects. However, the topic, the strong visuals (including lots of movie stills), and the casual voice will attract plenty of readers.
