Stunt motorcyclist, Johnny Blaze, in order to save the life of his mentor, agreed to give his soul to "Satan" (later changed to super-dooper-arch-demon named Mephisto with a Charisma of 23). Instead, Blaze's soul bonded with the entity called Zarathos. When emitting Zarathos' powers, Blaze's head becomes a flaming skull and he wields a fiery motorcycle and trademark blasts of hellfire from his skeletal hands.

At first... Marvel had Blaze's head spin around in circles and his eyes rolled into the back of his head as he started talking in tongues and ranting all sorts of bile, like, "there is no such thing as global warming! Scooter Libby is innocent I tell you, There are too WMDs! ... What oil?" but they decided to go with the whole burning skull and hell fire thing because it was more believable.

The subsequent Ghost Rider series (1990-98) was Daniel Ketch (Blaze's brother) instead of Johnny Blaze since Blaze ate the brains of a hippy on LSD and he soon fell in love with a Betty Page cigarette lighter and went to Cuba to land him some fine cigarros! He is currently in Baghdad with his lighter enjoying the fireworks on an extended vactaion. You can catch him every Friday and Saturday in Hawaiian shorts at the Casa Blanca drinking from his, non other, favorite Marvel Ghost Rider Frosted Pint Glass. But it's Stoli, not some fruity drink.
