"Vampire" was created in 1893–94 by the Norwegian Symbolist painter Edvard Munch, who also painted "The Scream."
The UK's newspaper "The Independant" calls this painting "One of the most sensational and shocking images in European art" and "too degenerate for the Nazis." Before being auctioned off by Sotheby's for over 30 million dollars, it was in the hands of a private collector. "The Independant" goes on to say: "'Vampire' caused a sensation when it was unveiled, touching on turn-of-the-century fears about women's liberation. Some critics were outraged by its perverse, almost sado-masochistic depiction of passion."
"It was shocking to Berlin society just as it is shocking today.'" The U.K. Independant, Tuesday, September 23, 2008
