Set in the fictional town of Angel Grove, California the action begins when the evil witch, Rita Repulsa is freed from her 10,000 years of confinement. She and her army of evil Space Aliens set their sights on conquering Earth. Soon Zordon a wise sage who had captured Rita all those years ago becomes aware of her escape from captivity, he set about finding five "teenagers with attitude," to defend the Earth from Rita's attacks, along with his robotic assistant Alfa 5. The five teens chosen are Jason Lee Scott (The Red ranger), Kimberly Hart (The Pink ranger), Zack Taylor (the Black ranger), Trini Kwan (The Yellow ranger) and Billy Cranston (The Blue ranger). Zordon gives them the ability to morph into Power Rangers and gives each a large powerful robotic machine called a Zord, these combine into the Megazord.
After consecutive failures to defeat the Rangers, Rita decides the only way to stop them is to attack them with one of their own. In possession of a special Green Ranger power, Rita kidnaps and brainwashes a local teen whose fighting skills prove to equal that of Jason's in a martial arts contest held in Angel Grove. The new teen, Tommy Oliver, becomes the Green Ranger. Eventually, the Green Ranger is defeated and the brainwashing is revered, he joins the Power Rangers, and his Zord gains the ability to join with the Rangers Dion zords.
However Rita wishes to get back the Green Rangers powers and so constructs the Green candle, that when burnt out will remove his powers and sever him from the morphing grid. The Rangers are unable to stop the process but Rita does not ain the Green Rangers powers as they are transferred to the Red Ranger before they are lost. Later Tommy becomes the White Ranger and rejoins the team.
Later more of the team are replaced although for the rest of the season the ranger colours remain constant.
