How do they relate to the old myths and stories. And how do they relate to the truth?
As I would expect to be rather self evident, there is little truth to be found in fiction. If one seeks truth in any historical area, it is to actual historical research one ought to defer. And where vampires are concerned, this modus operandi should be no different.
There are a number of wonderful resource books out there written by doctorate-level Slavicists, anthropologists and forensic medical professionals (e.g., Drs. Jan Perkowski, Alan Dundes, Paul Barber, Bruce McClelland) that one should first read and consider before attempting to come to any conclusions regarding who and what the "Vampire" of history was and perhaps still is.
What these expert resources reveal is that the actual Vampire from whence this term itself originates bears little if any resemblance at all to the Vampire of Western pop culture. No fangs, no blood drinking, no fear of crucifixes, no aversion to sunlight much less sparkling in the sun. Now, as to what exactly they were and why they were so demonized and then hunted down... that you'll have to consider for yourself once you have taken the time to begin replacing cinematic fiction with historical facts, assuming you should someday choose to do so.
The key in any area of inquiry is to seek out knowledge rather than rely on the claimed knowledge of others. Without knowledge, there is no intellectual self sufficiency. And without that, there is only naivete and ultimate gullibility to whatever others tell you that they can have sound attractive and appealing.

I think the movies take what little they may know and add more fiction to create the illusion of fact to hipe the movies thinking of the myths. we see that movies have done this with all realms of the myths in our times.
I'm very skeptical of pop culture media, , and other garbage. They take it to heart without really investigating media when it comes to the truth about our lifestyles. I can't tell you how many people I ran into, especially teens who suddenly claim Vampirism because of Vampire Dairies, Twilight, and some of this other stupid things on tv and films. It's the same when I ran into young people who got into Witchcraft because ot "Charmed."
I think that like all fictitious things truth gets lost between the lines

I could have said it better myself.
I do find it fascinating how people of this day and age (and throughout history) will believe just about anything they see or are told. They are shown these movies and told there is some truth hidden in them and they all buy into the idea. I have met to many people that have either moved to Seattle or are out “looking for their Edward.” Before Twlight it was Interview with a Vampire. People move to New Orleans and looked for Lestat. In the end the average populous will not hunt truth they would rather believe a Hollywood creation because they find their lives boring. Sad truth is most times truth is far stranger then fiction.

Yes, and never more so where the truth regarding Vampires is concerned.
Upir you are truly a man of wisdom.
Where movies are concerned you also must realize movies are made to make money so they love fantastical stuff especially if they defy all the laws of nature and even make stuff up themselves like making vampires into sparkling fairies to appeal to a teenage female base of fans. That being said for serious research i would not use holywood films or any fiction films. There may be some documentaries out there i do not know I have never done much research on vampires.
stories, legends... myths.
and the truth... as written by the victor and, historian.
they all have one thing in common: written by man.
literal truth is just that.
fictional truth, as written from a bias perspective, now... [[pardon the pun]] that's another story.
There's so many different beliefs thats it is definitely difficult to actually know the truth. I do enjoy them, but am partial to True Blood, probably because I've read the books.
I agree they are entertaining, I love True Blood. I would love to see them make a show from the Hollow Series by Kim Harrison. She writes similar to Charlaine Harris. I love Queen of the Damned! I know things are out there the way they portray Vampires in Movies, but I just watch for entertainment and don't take it any more serious then that
the legends arose to combat and explain fear.
they persist through fiction, to entertain.
