Satan is a construct of humanity, designed to scare bad little boys and girls into being good.
I second that, and add that Saten is a made-to-order enemy to 'Godly people". Personally I dont subscribe to mythology known as religion.
Satan also provides an excuse for bad behavior, and impulsive actions. Nothing gets the record cleaner than "The Devil made me do It!"
I actually feel kind of bad for this mythological character because he is so often painted to be a villain but in honesty he would have everyone be free while his opposition would enslave us all to worship and love only him.
hmmmm
You just gotta have an adversary that can tempt one against Thou Lord and God

I have an opinion that I guess isn't too common among Christians (I am a Christian). I do not believe in Satan. Many Christians will point to the Old Testament's passage in Isaiah as the fall of Lucifer- when it is actually speaking of the fall of a Babylonian king. Hebrews have no concept of the 'devil'. It is not easy for many Christians, but the Old Testament should be read without the Christian lens, for it is the Jewish Bible. This is the way I learned to read it in seminary and college. Christians can't rightly tell the Jews what they 'meant' to say, although they may choose to believe differently.
The original Hebrew term, satan, is a noun from a verb meaning primarily to, “obstruct, oppose". Ha-Satan is traditionally translated as “the accuser,” or “the adversary.” In the Book of Job, ha-Satan is a member of the divine council, "the sons of God" who are subservient to God. Ha-Satan, in this capacity, is many times translated as "the prosecutor", and is charged by God to tempt humans and to report back to God all who go against His decrees
I watched a show on tv that explained how the makeup of Satan is formed by use of former chaotic type Gods such as Set (for the tail), Bael, Leviathan (?) for the trident, etc etc....

I think that the reason that people tend to equate Satan with evil is because he offers an option. I see a car on the street, I want it but it isn't mine, stealing is wrong the Bible tells me so but I want it so I steal it and it was the devil that gave me the idea. In some way.
It is a way of denying personal responsibility and if a person turns their life over to God then all is forgiven.
In some cases a person may be so "evil" that they need "Satan" cast out of them. I mean imagine the piety of someone who declares themselves possessed by Satan himself.
Satan is at worst a tool in the hands of a tyrant god at best a weak fool that could not lead a successful rebellion. This is assuming the event of the bible actually occurred and that these characters are not the work of a brilliant tale of fiction.
As a Jew this takes on a different meaning for me.
The Hebrew word "Satan" means "Hinderer." To hinder someone means to hold him back, to try to prevent him from doing something. G-d created the Hinderer to give us work to do in this world. Satan is here to make things difficult for us, so we can overcome our evil temptations, and PASS the test. That is the purpose of Satan. Satan is an angel whose purpose has been determined by G-d.
If We were made in God's image and, man Made Satan, then he to must look similar...
and, that's a theory.
Me?
we are God.
we are Satan.

All our monsters look like us- take, vampires for instance O_o... we're so egotistical we always have to use our own image to create new things.
I like that way of looking at it BLOODLIFE.
I have said the same thing many times Angelus, in fact if there is an Antichrist I believe it to be the whole of humanity and not just one person.
Off topic yes.
Images, I have noticed that too.
I have to say that I don't believe anything the Bible has to say... period.
BUT in the event that I came to believe it, I have to say that I would side with Satan. Even according to the original texts, Satan is a good guy, he just got confused. Of course... who wouldn't... what with the incompetent father figure who doesn't care. But I digress.
But to answer the question of whether I like Satan or not (if it's not obvious from the paragraph above) I quite like him.
That's an interesting thought! I guess we all have our very own Satan inside us.
Satan is the darkside of life like god is the light side
i belive he is a falen angle but most people give him way to much power blaming him for everything, because we dont except responsiblty for them selfs
Satan is an extension of Christianity as the "bad" apart from the "good"(God).
I do not believe in God, so I do not believe in Satan.
"Satan" is the fake diety people blame for their own "sins".
Now while I believe Satan to be a being (as i am prone to lean towards deistic Satanism), it is rather obvious that if we didnt have Satan as our scapegoat we would simply create some other thing to blame. Such is our nature. This makes it difficult for some people to believe that Satan is real. Take for example another reality where religion didnt exist. The people would find something to blame for the worst in people. My thoughts on Satan are simple: I believe in him, but I do concur with those who think he is a scapegoat, because he is. Whether he is real or not.
Thats my opinion anyways.
