Gene Therapy

Gene therapy has grown out of the science of genetics or how heredity works. Scientists know that life begins in a cell, the basic building block of all multicellular organisms. Humans, for instance, are made up of trillions of cells, each performing a specific function. Within the cell's nucleus (the center part of a cell that regulates its chemical functions) are pairs of chromosomes. These threadlike structures are made up of a single molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which carries the blueprint of life in the form of codes, or genes, that determine inherited characteristics.
A DNA molecule looks like two ladders with one of the sides taken off both and then twisted around each other. The rungs of these ladders meet (resulting in a spiral staircase-like structure) and are called base pairs. Base pairs are made up of nitrogen molecules and arranged in specific sequences. Millions of these base pairs, or sequences, can make up a single gene, specifically defined as a segment of the chromosome and DNA that contains certain hereditary information. The gene, or combination of genes formed by these base pairs ultimately direct an organism's growth and characteristics

through the production of certain chemicals, primarily proteins, which carry out most of the body's chemical functions and biological reactions.
But what about gene therapy for children? There's a fair amount of risk involved in trials of this kind of therapy, and to date, only kids who are seriously ill or have illnesses incurable by conventional means have been involved in clinical trials using gene therapy.

For those with serious illnesses that aren't responsive to conventional therapies, however, gene therapy may soon offer hope that didn't exist just a short time ago.
Question #1. If you have a decease, will you volunteer yourself to become a tester to this amazing discovery?
Question #2. Can religion be a factor in the evolution of experiments regarding gene therapy?

Question #1. If you have a decease, will you volunteer yourself to become a tester to this amazing discovery?

That would depend on several factors including the stage of my disease, the treatment methods and the ultimate results ( I know it is a testing stage, but one wouldn't want to 'waiste' ones precious remaining time on experiments that could even deteriorate the condition - one never knows..)
On the other hand, if you could help science discover a treatment, perhaps not for yourself, but for others, then my opinion would be a life well spend..

Question #2. Can religion be a factor in the evolution of experiments regarding gene therapy?

Of course it can, if you let it be.. Religion is a delicate subject as it is personal. Also, religion and science never have been two best friends in course of history and time.. Therefore it is your point of view and beliefs that will have the final say in the matter.
If you strongly believe in the disease being God's will, then that might influence your decisions as to treat and perhaps alter the outcome.
On a larger scale, I do believe certain religions see science as a threat. If they consider gene therapy as one of them, that remains to be seen.
However, I do not believe religion will have an obvious influence on science's progress.

There is already opposition from religions regarding gene therapy.

Look how strongly they oppose stem cell research. Religion despises anything that has to do with talking about biology, it makes them feel icky.. haha

Yes, but do you think religion will have an influence on science's progress?

Throughout the ages religion has strangled the progression of science because of fear. The documention is endless.

Question 1: if I had a disease the n sure why not.

Question 2: I agree with what has been said above. Many religions are just like that. 100% anti-biology

Yes, religion can influence any progress, when their agenda can be neutralized and they use the influence by the manipulation of the masses, using brain wash, by telling people that only the creator will create a human...Pure Boloney!! Do you know how much money the catholic church have?? WOW...countless. and for sure that money is always used to control Government and politicians.

With PXE the only solution will gene therapy so far they are already doing some of it, for the eyes, and for the heart problems and for the calcification (sp) of the bones and articulation and joint, as PXE is a degenerative and congenital disease.

I also learned that there was some intensive research done for alzimer patient, and other genetic degenarative desease.

If I would accept to be treated? Depends if the doc showed me facts and details of how it works and that it had works in the past then yes, if there was success in the past.

As for religion I know that for so many centuries it has always be a cat and dog fight between sicence and religion... just think of galilleo... round earth? flat earth?

I would consider it.

Question #2. Can religion be a factor in the evolution of experiments regarding gene therapy?

Of course. Which is too bad too.

I would like to think that if a deity should it exist, no matter what you choose to call it , had created man in it's own image, it would also have infused the intellectual capacity so achieve such feats.

it depends what they plan to do with gene thearapy.they used cells from murdered unborn babys for one experiment.curing illnesses seems like a good thing.maybe they will want to make sex changes easy and painless too.then they will want to make dogs that can talk.science is a tool like any other but what is it used for much of the time?Tolkein was not opposed to science itself but how it was used.im just amazed the WW3 did not happen in the 1970s.inside every human being there is a monster just waiting to get out and that can make science a monster too.
