What does the Solar Eclipse of May 20, 2012 mean to you?

As many ancient civizations observed past solar eclipses they were moved by such events as divulged in the following poem:

"A fragment of a lost poem by Archilochus (ca. 680–645 BCE), who was a Greek poet and soldier, seems to clearly depict a total solar eclipse:

Nothing there is beyond hope,

nothing that can be sworn impossible,

nothing wonderful, since Zeus,

father of the Olympians,

made night from mid-day,

hiding the light of the shining Sun,

and sore fear came upon men."

Personally, it means nothing.

Is it really supposed to MEAN something?

Many ancient cultures believed it to be a sign of a end of days and they performed many rituals to avoid the destruction of the world.

Well let's look back to why or how the people viewed such things in their time shall we?

When the Vikings first looked up in the sky and saw a Solar Eclipse, they thought the Gods were responsible for it. So they probably panicked or did what Vikings do to try and scare the thing away or whatever people did back then, and whenever it finally moved, they felt they accomplished something.

Now with that said....I agree with Zombie. Why do natural occurances have to have some sort of mystical meaning?

Many ancient cultures believed any number of debunked superstitions as a direct result of their ignorance and the fear such always engerders.

Were a solar eclipse truly a portent of the "end of days," then the Earth would have been destroyed literally 100,000s of times over given the number of eclipses that have occurred since Humankind has existed on this planet. And yet... here we all still are, and without any of the rituals, Human sacrifices, etc., ancient cultures used falsely believing such ridiculousness was necessary to "save" the world.

So, as has already been asked, what's the point of this question?

Possibly it was (to some extent) a good thing though.

If as you say, they thought it was the end of days, perhaps people treated each other better. So, even though these ancient beliefs were debunked, perhaps they served some purpose.

Of course, I could just be full of crap.

To me it presents a proverbial rebirth of planetary proportion. Having an eclipse gives me the distinct outlook that the Universe closed its eye for a time then woke up once more. When this happens, we should all make a wish!

"If as you say, they thought it was the end of days, perhaps people treated each other better. "

Likely they made more brutal sacrifices to please the angry gods.

It means a great deal to me. It means that our solar system moves and we are very fortunate to have such an ideal place in it.

Not a damn thing other than it is a very cool natural occurance .

When you think about it , and the fact that all life is actually sitting alomst like a bacteria on the surface of a massive ( according to us) ball of molten rock with a thin crust wheeling through space at aprox. 67,000 miles per hour around a giant (again... giant to us) ball of burning gas in a black void only 3 degrees above absolute zero and spinning at a little over 1000 miles an hour at it fastest point, with another "little" rock spinning around it!

I am over simplifying of course but it kind of humbles you if but just a little ...don't it? Makes one think, we are ALL lucky to be here.

Timing is everything.

Foreverseeking, I couldn't have said it better.

Sadly, I wasn't able to see it either, wrong side of the country.

I think any kind of celestial happening is special, as the particular happening will never be reproduced identically ever again. Its something that makes up history. Celestial happenings are usually beautiful and unique. I guess you should have an interest in Astronomy to appreciate this kind of thing.

Seeing as how we are all still here I don't believe it ment anything like end days. I do understand that ancient cultures may have seen it this way but in the present time we understand that it is just part of nature. For me it just ment a moment of peace. I can't explain but in those feww clearing moments I just felt at peace. Good or bad I'd go with good.

Solar eclipses.. To me it means that the moon passed between the sun, thus blocking out the star for short time.

To believe anything about eclipses meaning the end of days or whatnot is silly. We live in the 21st century, we've evolved past what ancient civilizations once believed, because we know better. To hold any meaning in an event that naturally occurs is ridiculous. We might as well ditch the technology, live in mud huts and go back to believing natural occurrences are acts of gods and mystical forces. An eclipse is just an eclipse, nothing more, nothing less.

I have to say that the jaded comments astound me. Have we become so educated that the simple beauty of a solar eclipse is a common occurrence. How can you witness such a thing and not attach meaning to it. I saw it as moment to reflect to stop and ponder the distractions in my life. It was a reminder to pause, take stock, throw out the trash, and be nice to each other.

During this cosmic event, I believe that the gravitational fields are changed enough to allow the possibility of time travel and our creators visit us. That is why there is so much documented UFO activity during these events.

Doru, an excellent theory.

From a personal perspective all this started during the solar eclipse over the Avebury stones in Wiltshire near the Henge.

I was lucky enough to witness the event Horizon from the hills near the white horse overlooking a Crop Circle we believed was made by locals but who knows.

The sky went dark and shadows over the stones shifted, so very cold, a still silence, a darkness descended back then in 1996/7.

I think you are right forces have moved once again, so now I must say farewell. Take care, TFS.

So is it during every eclipse gravity is changed or just this one?

Do you remember that gravity slows the speed of light relative to those observing?

The speed of light may "change" but whatever that speed is can not be surpassed by anything with mass within the same system.

*goes and cries*

All cosmic events change gravitational fields, so the possiblities could be limitless with the correct technology. The unusal amount of sightings during these events does make me wonder if there is a connection.
