I think the man was a pushed a bit beyond sanity by the challenges faced. He used any method of saving his people and his land from invansion though....
So the historic leader was a Hero in using drastic means for drastic times and challenges..

You have a good point about the bloodline, but I dontthink the way he killed people was something that he 'had' to do. Mutilatiing sexual porgans, impailing (hence the name) and suchlike, and many of them from HIS OWN LAND.

However, he was defending his people right until the end, but I think its atrocious how he treated other humans.
