Pittsburgh...the Safar Centre....Dr Howard Champion....
Announced yesterday(?), the first ever successful attempt to place a living creature into suspended animation with full recovery has been completed.
A dog (grr) was drained of its blood, which was then replaced with a saline solution, which was kept at ice cold temperature to preserve the organs.
the animal was officially classified as clinically dead for more than 3 hours before the saline was then replaced by fresh warm blood.
The 'scientists' involved say that there were no ill effects, no brain damage, for example.
How this can be defined for a dogs mind, I am not entirely sure.
The first human trials are to start within the year.
I am not yet sure whether to be reviled at this prospect or simply stunned into amazement...
"What do we want?"
"Brains!"
"When do we want them?"
"....Brains!"
~zombie march~
sorry, i had to.
i did hear about this and it's is really intresting.
I would say stunned into amazement....
as the potential for interplanetary travel requires this technology....people with diseases could choose suspention till there are better cures or traetments...
it's actually fairly simple to discern whether there is damage to the dogs brain...brain and electrochemical scans can uaually tell the before and after picture
Daermon...not an attack on you, but, with only 30-40% of how our brain functions operate being really understood, I cannot readily accept that there could be no long lasting damage to some area that may not be put into use until later in life...I dont believe that they can possible enthuse that this causes no damage....the blood is the life, remove it and there is death...for what effect could this experience have on the human conciousness? being that we are more capable then animals of perception of not only ourselves, but also the universe, what matrices of thought, patterns of biochemical energy and synapses could be affected?
These things cannot be measured in a scan...
but I agree with the potentioal for extra solar exploration of the galaxy would be a long term direction for this....actually, this reminds me of a theory (not mine) that we humans were brought here on some kind of space craft millins of years ago, which is supposedly crashed somewhere in either Argentina or under the Dead Sea....but this is pure fantasy at present, but they envisage cryo-tech as a part of this crafts capabilities....just thought it may interest somone...
hehe well I put that forth as a scientific reasoning for a dog....the human brain is a slieghtly more complex piece of machinery to be sure....
here is another take on the same topic with mice
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4469793.stm
Ah...yes...similar, but in the case you cite, they have frozen the entire speciment, with blood included...this one in particular interests me for the removeal from the body of the entire contents of its blood...a frightening prospect that one could have their life taken away and returned upon a whim...how long beofre we see the 'demolition man' method of incarceration of criminals...no need for the death penalty, as they are not really dead....the other potential applications for this are truly astounding...
like suspending a person awaiting organ transplant.......the idea is not only sound...but kind of profound also.....
but as to the blood....it's only a fluid used to transport oxygen and other chemicals to the body....the synaptic responses in your brain are what make you who you are......and they actually fire off just fine without blood as a transfer medium....a saline solution would be an acceptable substitute....once you have slowed the body metabolism......
...still makes me feel rather quesy...and not a little concerned as to the negative aspects...
Incredible people playing to be God.
When will the world learn the lesson I wonder?
Hehe ... "Brain....!" I love those movies :D
If man is playing god by using technology and science , does that mean that through science and technology , man will become god ?
perhaps we already are g*d, but simply have forgotten and cannot realise it through the tumult of bllx that we are fed from birth to death...?
then again, would we want to be?
I mean, perfection is pretty, but it is also stagnent and quite boring, by definition...
Its just amazing what the human race has done, how far we have come from over the years of expermentation and genitic research, being able to clone and now suspanded animation.
I feel that hmans were designed to eventually become god.....as an experiment by god to explain how he/she/they became the way they are...
sort of a lets thow these ingredients together and see what we get....I do not believe in an omnipotent god....just powers far above us as we are now...
an interesting and thought provoking supposition Daermon..
That's interesting/disturbing......... that makes me feel uneasy. It will get out of control and bad things are sure to come from it.
true enough gorey....
Thing is that there are plenty of people who just have a general aversion to change and would be quite happy starving to death just to be able to remain a luddite.....
As for suspending animation on people I think it would have good and bad points as it will be just like any other form of technology it will be comoditized and sold to the highest bidders unless the extreme right wing has their way with it (like t-cell research and the word "controceptive" in anti-aids litterature for africa)
I personally am not afraid of technology I'm afraid of who is going to use it first and for what perpose....
Daermon I like that line of thought... that it is impossible to act against our nature simply because anything we are capable of doing is within our nature.... tho that is sorta bleak when one holds it up to the light
Evolution, we work to become better and soon we'll be extinct like those before us replaced by those we create.
This is an amazing step in technology... and a scary one at that.
If this blood that was placed into the dog after the seline wasn't the dogs blood, then could this mean that in a sence the dog is a different dog.
Maybe this discovery is a glitch in the matrix *laughs*
The importantthing that youmentioned is the dogs mind. What would be the point if ebing in suspended animation led to an irrepairable change of the mind/soul? I suppose it depends what you can believe, to decide whether you truly think this will help or hinder us in other ways than that of 'science.'
Our purpose is to destroy and we are damn good in fullfilling it!
Everytime we found a "cure" for something that ment a few destructions of something else...
zombie nation - probably not, but androids - I would bet, self destruction - 100% possibility!
A good point... I do believe that in some ways the more we rely on technology, the more we reject natures cures.
the more we continue to reject nature, themore it disappears. The end of this cycle isnt a nice one.
the way I see this cycle is something evolved to the point of becoming godlike....then wondered how it came to be.....as record keeping along the way was probably flawed....so it started a few experiments...to watch them and see if they can evolve the same...to figure out their own beginbnings...
and eventually we will become godlike...but by then we will have forgotten our own beginnings...and wil start some experiments.....etc.etc.etc
i agree with bloodlust we shouldnt play god he will kill us sooner or later
We can't stop people from playing God. Just hope for the best........it's getting worse.
Echo -- If so , after nature as we know it is no more , man will be accustomed with the new way and call IT nature , however different .
Daermon -- Nice point :D
Kerriggor -- Spoken like a true sheep , huh ? :P
We all play god when watching TV ..
-- governed shall we be , but by our nature alone --
You know that's just creepy, for medical reason as said before would be good......but that's just as wrong as when they put that ear on that mouse
That is a little disturbing to here. I dont think that people should be messing with stuff like that.
A Popsicle with a hint of salt. Man playing God is a scary thought and yet we have been trying this for years. I am not sure if I would volunteer for this mission and would prefer the other option, death. As far as the brain issue and that brain damage didn’t occur I would have to agree with Stabb. Scientist do not fully understand what damage would occur since we do not use 100% of our brain nor do we know what the other percentage does. I would be very afraid knowing that even though part of our brain, the part that we understand works would be intact the other parts may have damage. Another reason would be that if I slept for 100 years would they have the same blood type that I once was.
Oh yes I've heard about this in the Italian news.
Well for decades humans tried to make life better. However technology has its negative side.I really don't know what to think about this, but I think there will be consequences since humans abuse of their abilities.
yeah they have been wanting to do this for years main talk was for prisoners to cut down escapes costs and jobs for screws clean up the streets they reckon and save money when there sentence is finished bang with the blood back to life like nothings happened and released which is pretty cool when you think about it as theres no such thing as rehabilitation
another i just remembered was Walt Disney is on ice till they can find a cure for what killed him but if his body shut down not got switched off like daermon explained in an earlier reply wouldnt it all be mush and hardened or rotten closed brown like veins not healthy i hope some one knows what i mean
i think it's kinda cute... now zombie man can have a best friend too.
...and I would add a question: Who gave us the right to interfere?
I dunno...but the idea of chilled brains makes me tongue quiver...lmao
i see my other half has already added his 2 cents to the conversation, i would have to disagree with you on this one daermon darling, as a believer in fate i think that if something is sick to the point that if we weren't to do that kind of procedure that the creature would surely die, then it would have no quality of life anyway and to freeze it in the hope of finding some sort of cure in the very distant future would be rather pointless. not to mention that once frozen, life around it would carry on and everyone around it would eventually die. how long would the creature sit in animation before a cure was found? and once it was administered, would there be any point in it's existance being that everyone around it that it loved would have either moved on or died?
if it is successfull
every 1 will become equivalent to immortal (If some disease occured the life can then be suspended n restart it when there is cure )
