This is for you to tell us waht you think is the scariest vampire novel ever and why you think so.

I definitely think Stephen King's " 'Salem's Lot" is the most terrifying. From the memories of Ben and Hubie Marsten to Ralphie Glick to the way the town turns into a ghostville.

I read this book when it first came out (yes I am OLD!) and it scared the bejesus out of me. I was reading it on the way to a Forensics match in Rock Springs, Wyoming and someone behind me grabbed my shoulder and yelled "BOO". I have never moved so fast in my LIFE!

Not even when I ran the high hurdles for track!

What's your scariest vamp novel and why?

(2nd place for me is "Vittorio" by Anne Rice)

I was pretty freaked out by Dracula Unbound, but then, i was only 14 when I read it.

I bet if I read it now, I'd think it was rubbish...lol

I like the idea of dark futures, where in this one, vampires had conquered humanity, much like the storyline for the Anime Vampire Hunter D.

Sunglasses after dark was a pretty good one as well.

This thread is going to become a reading list for me. =P

Me, too XanderLucian. That is one reason why I wanted to start it so I could be exposed to some different authors and works.

BTW - I was still pretty young when I read Salem's Lot and it may not have jsut come out. I think I read it in 1978. I was 14.

i dont know to be honest anything by anne rice more than likley.

I personally didn't think Anne's novels were that scary. I didn't need to have all the lights on while I was reading any of her stuff *except* Vittorio the Vampire.

I have to keep all the lights on though when I read almost anything by SKing.

Well to me Anne Rices books are not scary at all. I find them boring actually.

Please don't kill me all those Anne Rice Fans.

I Like Salems Lot by Stephen King but it didn't scare me. Kept me wanting to read more.

Brian Lumleys Necroscope series is really good. But again not scary.

Actually i haven't found a book yet that has truely scared me.

I have yet to find a scary vampire book.

I find all of Anne Rice's books very intreguing and keeping you coming back for more.

So there is nothing scarier than 'Salem's Lot? Arrggghhh!

And I was nore scared by the Stand becasue that could actually HAPPEN.

I don't maybe it is just me..I didn't find Salem's Lot all that scary. Now the one book that Stephen did that was a mind blower was Delories Clairborne (ms) and Misery..but that's not Vampire based. I am not a huge Stephen King fan, so I will just leave this thread to others.

I know I'm in the minority here and will most likely be pelted with rocks and garbage but here goes...

I find Stephen King's books, in general, incredibly boring. I believe he is a very good writer, but not a good HORROR writer. He has a tremendous grasp of language and all, but he spends so much time trying to show how literate he is, he never gets around to being scary until maybe the very end of the book. There are a few exceptions, of course. I enjoyed "Misery" and "The Dead Zone," but his other books...like "Cujo." If I pick up a book that's supposed to be about a crazed, rabid dog, THAT's what I want to read about. I don't give a flying flip about the marital problems of the man and woman who own the dog...I want a crazed, rabid dog, dammit! I usually find myself flipping ahead pages in his books while muttering, "come on...get on with it."

Anne Rice...very atmospheric, but not scary. I enjoyed "Interview With the Vampire" when it first came out (yeah, I'm old), but I didn't care for "Lestat" too much and only made it about half-way through "Queen of the Damned" before I lost interest. Never read anything else by her.

Dean Koontz is the author most often equated with King. Personally, I like him better. King's technically a better writer, but as far as horror goes...you open up a Koontz book and BANG! Something's happening on the first page and it doesn't let up until the last page.

The writer that is most often mentioned with Anne Rice is Poppy Z. Brite. I find her writing much more interesting. Especially "Exquisite Corpse." It'[s not a vampire novel but holy crap...talk about disturbing!

i dont think that i ever read anne rice let me know a good one and i shall read it i love stephan king though

I agree with you for the most part about King - especially later works. But his early stuff (minus Cujo - lol) were pretty well done - atmospheric and I suppose liking a writer's style is subjective too.

I do think you are correct for the most part though. But I loved "The Talisman" (of course Straub had a hand in that) and he was phenomenal with "The Eye of the Dragon" and the whole Gunslinger series.

But, yes, you have to like the way he writes.

I like Straub's writings too - but don't think he has done a vampire novel???

To be quite honest, I don't think any book has scared me truthfully, but that's because I read alot, so little things don't suprise me

Umm Vampire books are supposed to be scary? Vampires are the one thing that never really scared me. Frankenstien, the Wolfman those kinds of guys scared me. I was all ways too busy rooting for the vampire.

I am beginning to think it is age relative. But I still get chills up my spine when reading certain things.

I have a *very* good imagination...

when i was reading anne rice novels i didnt find any of them scary, but i have yet to read salems lot...i must now go and raid my mothers collection of stephen king novels

There has to be someone else who got scared by a story???

I can't believe that no one felt "scared" for a character in a book.

When I read I am very empathetic with my protagonist.

I have to agree with darkfantasywriter about Poppy Z. Brite. She writes the kind of stuff that just sticks with you.
As for a freaky vamp novel the only one that got to me was "Manitou Blood" by Graham Masterton. The plot was a little off but the "cold ones" freaked me the hell out.

see thats the thing i cant find vampires scary and never have, you know when you a kid and your always scarred of somthing in your room just before you fall asleep? well i was always hoping to see a vampire or have one feed on me, the thing i was most terrified of was the boogy man, considering i didnt think he had the ability to reson.

So far I have not found a Vampire book that has scared me, but I will be keeping an eye on this thread because I haven't read every vampire book ever written.

i dont really consider any ann rice scarry or even stephen king im gona have to go read those other books though but i doubt their scary
vampire books tend to be more atmospheric or romantic than any thing
