Loup Garou/Vampire: Informative
I have a fascination with oral tradtions, ie. stories passed down generations (unwritten stories). I know some may not read what follows so, since joining the Rave, I have noticed some members have assosiated themselves as Vampire ( of various kinds) and a few as Loup Garou (werewolves/lycanthrope). I have also noticed some who have a grudge against the other group............................
The question I pose here is this:
Why do you feel this way when both groups may have a common origin?
Yes, I see the dissimilarities as well, but more similarities then not.
1.) Both are believed to have been cursed at some point in time.
2.) Both can be killed with blessed objects (as far as legand dictates).
3.) The legends are for the most part brought to us from the same area's of Europe.
Many European legends have followed us to the united states, the formost of these being stories of Loup Garou (werewolves) and Vampire.
They have both been made popular by Hollywood (movies and TV) , popular literature, and games. I have heard and read the stories of both speices if you will and found they do seem to have some common histories.
" the myth of the werewolf"
The myth of the werewolf is very old and common with many European people. From the point of view of mythology, the werewolf was inseparable for a long time with that of the vampire. Both being in fact a single monster .
“'' One had already the malicious ones stylés. The vampires. Then one made the malicious dreadful ones. The wolves-garous." ( Excerpt's from Wikipedia)..
Definitions of both:
The Vampire : (this is the legendary):has walked among us since time immemorial. The vampire is the undead, the resurrected, the lover of life without life, the drinker of blood without living blood, and the seducer that breeds by taking life from its victim..
The Vampire can be killed by a blessed stake piercing the heart. He/she can me warded off by the useage of garlic, holy water, and holy relics.
Werewolves (again legendary) :are creatures that turn from humans into wolves - by hereditary, purposefully using Magick or by being cursed. The herb, Wolfs Bane or shooting the Werewolf with blessed silver bullets are deterrents for these creatures.
The Werewolf feeds upon the living or dead. Werewolfism is also known as Lycanthrope by the medical community.
I hope you have found this informative.
Other than this site being a vampire site, you will not find any grudges here. I have found VR to have the most open minded people on the internet. This thread better be informative rather than flaming or it is gone.
Im half vampire, and i have nothing against lycanthropes...one of my best freidns is acually half lycan and sure we fight...a lot..we're still friends
I have no intentions of flamming Billythejust..I have found some not many that well feel hositlity and there is inforamtion here showing the similarities of both just my intention to start dialogue as to why people feel this way
Grudge is to strong a word. I am interested in opening a dialogue here about the simialrities or differences you see.. And why????
I have heard those stories as well Images although I do not live where you live and never have, the legends vary I found much to support them as werewolves and not a bigfoot type creature here online though since i couldn't find supporting evidences for the other legend I decided to do this and hopes that i might still find other info and maybe write an article???
I've never heard anyone on here calling themselves a Loupgarou, so that's a new one for me. Very interesting thread if I do say so myself. ;) But also, most of the people on this site are some of the most openminded people I have ever met in my life. Thanks for the info. :)
ETYMOLOGY: French, from Old French leu garoul : leu, wolf (from Latin lupus; see wkwo- in Appendix I) + garoul, werewolf (of Germanic origin; see w-ro- in Appendix I).
This is what i found as one of the definitions for werewolf...As Imagesinwords, said there is a legend in Louisiana of a beast much like bigfoot that lives in the swamps..The word that i used is french in origin and not well exactly spelled right but it came close in hopes it would bring dialogue of the similarities or differences people saw in the two speices..I again I find myself being maybe to obscure?? I don't know as this thread is still very new..I again didnt intend to inflame or flame anyone else..I get curious about things and i find tons of things on subjects that don't seem suitable for a thread I guess...
I have only heard one explanation of hatetred between the two. It goes back to the aristocratic organization of vampire houses, and the clan based method of organization of werewolves. The idea I came into contact with suggested the vampiric opinion of werewolves to be brutish dogs, and the lycan opinion finding vampires stuck up bastards for lack of a better term. I've heard whisperings of territory battles resulting, but nothing confirmed.
The only indifference between the two species I've ever heard of has been through media. Many stories and legends of the two are very much intertwined. Sharing territory, and food supply. Personally if I were a real vampire, I would definately be interested in some Lycan friends.
Aside from the Underworld movies, I've never heard of a rivalry between werewolves and vampires. There origins are quite similar, and apart from the betrayal bit between the species in those movies, there doesn't seem like there'd be a reason for any friction. Unless it's about prey.... then that's another story ;)
I think the animosity between Vampires and Werewolves is a hollywood construct...I think everybody just happily co-exists.....
for the one who said they are half vampire I wonder which half of their body?
In Chronicals of Riddick Director's cut deleted scenes, the bounty hunter starts out one of his space ship logs by stating he just captured a criminal on lupus 5.
I suggest you try to find the origin of the word lupus, as in the auto immune disease.
Apart from that, I would say my curse leads to a different auto immune disease, and I am a vampire. It could be some sort of subliminal underground Hollywood invisible grafitti, even the singificance of the letter 5 has some meaning.
If only it could be deciphered.... (tapping fingers on the table looking up)
Lupe means wolf in Italian. Is there a connection between entymologies?
I don't read horror. I only read classics, and nothing after the 1950's, so I don't know about these subcultures blooming.
I agree with imagesinwords. Any waring between vampires and therians is only in the movies.
It predates the Underworld movies as far as Whitewolf's world is concerned, but farther back then that I do not know.
it all depends on whoes story and or where in the world and desiding on which your to believe they are much like cats and dogs some get a long some dont
The only place I saw any sort of problems between vampires and lycans was in the Underworld series.
In my country we never had many legends about werewolves and such.
In my country Vampires, are thought to be Santeria witches who seek the blood of the innocent for their rituals. But i am sure it was just a wive's tail to scare us little ones.
We do not have wolves in my country (Cuba) so we never had a strong story on werewolves except for what Hollywood showed us.
i think that the grudge factor as said, is a movie or fantasy based fact.. they are surely different and it was even stated that they take energy differently too.....
i dont know much about both of them of course... but i think that the grudge is not that big if it exists
Good point Deathgirl.
I'm not sure what I was looking for was reasons people feel as they do besides the movie reasons..
I think once again I got off point and was a bit to obscure..
I saw the common origins for both speices and thought I had hit on somthing that might relieve a certain ammount of tension...
When I started my research however, I was looking for stories of the Loup Garou of the Lousiana swamps a creature that is much like the native american stories of big foot..no they don't call it that but that is the common term now for a creature believed to be a missing link
Fairy tales...
What are we really?
Am I a Vampire because of my inner self and what I am drawn to?
Or because I was bitten by a bat?
*rolls eyes*
Or because I saw an over the top movie and it seems cool at the moment?
Because I say so?
Because you say so?
OK call me Heretic, a disbeliever... I'm not trying to flame anyone, but how the fuck is someone half lycan? Lycan from the movie Underworld? OK I'm half Micky Mouse. He's related to the bat genus. So I gues that makes me a Vampire.
*bangs head on desk*
My apologies to anyone I have offended.
Follow your soul, your true being, into Darkness if that's were it leads you. Leave Hollywood in your Television.
Peace.
Ok Looks like I need to end this thread right now as nobody reads past a certain part and leaves the rest to be inflammed by this thread sorry to the doms and the admin
