To save you from jumping pages i put in all the info, my question is, ccould this mythalogical creature be a form of vampire to another culture?
Manananggal
According to Phil. Folklore, an Manananggal is a nocturnal being who eats the viscera parts of a human being.
Filipino stories share lots of information about this monsters:
How to become an Manananggal.
Unless you have a Mother or Father that is an Aswang, you are out of luck. Stories say that an aswang passes his powers to his or her child just before she dies.
But one story tells that a person can become an aswang by eating foods from Manananggal ( which is more or less transfigured meat ). Usually it takes the form of Camotes or Sweet Potatoes. They will look small and delicious, but take note, if they are placed in fire, they will jump and go back to their natural form, Human Flesh!
Another thing to do for you to be an aswang is to obtain the Flying Oil. Similar to the flying lotions of the witches of old, this is smeared all over the body at about midnight. The person will then feel extreme heat and some moments later, the lower part of his body will separate from his upper body. His wings will appear and off he goes.
The Manananggal Diet
The Mananangal will stay with his human diet until the rest of his life. Often he will hunt for food at night, usually humans who stay outside too late. Also he delights in Child's flesh. The Liver is one of the most delicious parts for him.
How to Stop a Manananggal
There are several things you can do to kill a Mananangal. One way is to use a Sibat or Spear. It is said that Manananggals are afraid of spears. Trust the spear into his heart and he will surely die.
You can also use the universal Magickal ingredient, Salt. Just throw salt the mananangal or more potently, place some on his lower body. In case you don't have salt, you can also use Ash, Garlic or Vinegar.
And the last thing you can do to kill him is expose him to sunlight. He will die a "dry" death, I tell you!
Saving a Manananggal,
There are also some things you can do to save a Manananggal or stop him from being so. You could Tell him to not eat human flesh for a year or use the ritual process.
First, he should be hung to a tree and a fire be built under him. The fire is to make sure that the creature that will come out from his mouth will be destroyed before he preys on other beings. It is said that this creature, usually a black chick is the cause of his delight in human flesh.
Next the manananggal should be whipped using a Buntot ng Pagi. He should be whipped until the creature comes out of his mouth.
I don't believe this could be considered a vampire at all..vampires feed off of blood...not actual flesh.
I don't know what this creature could be classified as though.
i dont think it is a vampire. but it is intriging so i will look it up. but the flesh traight i believe sets it apart from vampires
I just looked this thingamabobber up and this is what I got...
"It cannot be readily classified as a classical undead being or a vampire as per Western folklore or literature since the creature is, for all intent and purposes, a living human being during daytime or at any time when it does not detach itself from its body."

no its not a vampire... i agree with the comment above.. puuur. I looked it up as well and agree.
I would have to say Cannibal not vampiric LOL I mean if they live off the human as diet there are alot of Cannilbalism going on in places you could not even imagine... But it does not seem to be vampiric to me... just an opinion
Very interesting i feel it may not be a vampire but a canable
According to the link I posted above, it is mostly a woman's head detached from her body with her entrails hanging below her...and she has bat wings.
I kind of agree with her being a cannibal, but then again...some sort of demon. All I know is if I ever saw anything like that, I'm shooting it.
So I understand this thing. You can kill it with salt, like sprinkling on a birds tail. You can kill it with a spear through the heart, like if you was hunting. It eats human flesh like a cannibal, but is quite human in apperance. Absolutely outstanding, where can I get one
to test out these theories?
I would have to agree with some of the opinions here, I don't believe it is a vampire. As vampires just feed from blood not other body parts.
it sounds like some kind of cannibal to me. Of course u can kill it by putting a spear through its chest. I would say anything could be killed that way
I would say more of a canabal then I would a vampire. As with everything else that has been added to your message. Vampires don't feed on flesh.
But how do we really know they don't feed on flesh aswell maybe do?
Aswell but not as much
I would say canable. It is a different species. That is my opinion.
Velvet Passion we don't, its more of an assumption I would think that is.
i am so glad to have so many people posting to this thread. with the manananggal, it is a philipino fokelaw creature, i teacher of mine told me about it. I am told the manananggal attacks pregnant women to get the babys. i know the flesh eatting thing make you want to through the vampire thought out the window but some of the other bits and peices are intresting. like spearing the heart.
Of course, that would kill anyone or anything. I just can't see this thingy as a vampire because a vamppire feeds off of blood instead of flesh...but thanks for posting this. Been pretty interesting. ;)
cool. i didnt think this would reach here. im a filipino myself. and ive seen one of these things a few years ago with a couple of friends. it really exists. there are a lot of mythical creatures here in the philippines and the mananangal is one of them.
so your saying it isn't just a foke law tale? wow that Different...
I don't really believe that this could be a vampire but there are certainly some similarities. Like the fact that it feeds from humans, and that garlic can be used to stop him. And it states that you can thrust a spear into it's heart to kill it, that's sort of like staking a vampire. The only similarities I could come up with were based off the two legends or stories, I am not sure if I believe in either.
Well you know how every culture has it's own "monsters". This is just another one.
"You could Tell him to not eat human flesh for a year..."----hahahaha! Just tell him not to! haha......he will stop then. :P Like it had never occured to him before to stop. That just struck me funny.
Jamie is right.. bravo Jamie.. I mean one place could have monsters you never even heard of here.
Everyone is saying "cannibal vampire", but I think its closer to a zombie. Zombies eat human flesh or brains, duh.
You're right deena, at first I only noticed the similarities between the manananggal and the vampire, but now that you mention it I guess it shares some similarities with the zombie as well. So, this may be stupid, but what if this is just myth/story about a creature who's a mix between a zombie and a vampire?
It could be. Maybe an old person was telling it and got things mixed up? And someone took it seriously.
no i dont think this could be a vamp either for the sole fact a vampire drinks the blood not eat the flesh
Perhaps the most popular figure in Philippine horror literature, the Manananggal has become almost a symbol in pop culture and the answer to Western literature's vampire. Very much similar to the vampire, the manananggal is a blood-sucker, and is also related to bats. Unlike vampires, however, the manananggal doesn't belong to the undead. It is a transformed creature that roams around only at night, and lives as a normal human being during the day.
Ref: The Manananggal Phenomenon
By day, they look like beautiful women. In fact, the more adoring males they come across they often turn into their consorts who guard their queen fanatically, especially when her inanimate body is most vulnerable: at night. The word Manananggal roughly means "self-remover" in Tagalog. This is because at night, a Manananggal's head lifts from her body cavity, and she flies about, her internal organs hanging from her floating head. Alternatively, she turns her arms into wings, or spouts wings, and severs at the torso instead.

To be a Vampire, you only need blood. Wolve, feed from flesh.
*Wonders if the Manananggal is a cousin of the Chupicabra* Huh...*Shrugs*
the Manananggal sounds a lot like a cannibal rather than a vampire, all though burning in sun light is seen as vampiric of the Manananggal he does seem to be more cannibal than vampire.
