i watched a sci-fi movie called X-change. it was okay i liked the concept but have some questions. first i will tell you what it was about then ask ...OK, any person can have their consciousness transferred to one body to the next through a special device. they did not even have to be in the same room they could be states or countries apart as long as the buttons were hit at the right time your consciousness would (float) a term they used in the movie to the next host. you could be male or female it was quite wild.
my question is if we had this technology would we live forever just exchanging bodies when one got old and frail for a new one and live forever or would eventually our consciousness burn out and die?
Hmm that is a interesting question, kinda lke the old car that keeps going with a fw parts here and there.
I guess that ya if we had the technology to do so, I wouldnt see why not. For example.... what about people that are donors and just put in a freezer? I mean at this point there is much technology has done who really knows what is possible, especially with the cloning going on.
But if its an exchange it would just be a switch, someone would be getting the short end of the stick...
Ya that is true, petal , but if they could exchange it and regrow it now that would work
I don't think our consciousness would burn out, but I think that after a while it would have changed so much that we would be someone else.
This kinda reminds me of the quantum leap series where he was transformed into other bodies at any given time. with technoligy i think personally this could not occur, but you never know,
but yet why would you exchange for one or another is your life that black or just to frame another person for something out of spite, i would not know what concept this would hold.
I do not think it would burn out at all.. but like someone said above i do think after changing body we would change who we really are.. due to the fact that if someone has low self esteem in one body then they might be vain in another.
yet would they not carry their own traits into the body that they x-change too, well i mean a murder would still have that twitch about them to kill if their soul i shall say was put into another body. maybe an elderly would not like to be a child again, may help in school but yet to me there is a lot of negatives to x change.
I really didn't think about the age issue.. Like maybe a child wouldn't want to go to school if he/she already knew the knowledge or maybe the person doesn't want to live with their parents.. they would have to make sure to be picky about the body issue.. no mix ups..
in the movie it was just the consciousness going from one body to another and yes someone would get the short end of the stick the donors and host switch they still have thier own thought process like a fat chick going into a skinny girl may very well not want to switch back and in cases of terminal illness they used like death row inmates like if the person who was terminally ill was a good person they would switch him with the inmate then take the inmate who would be in the terminally ill body and do away with him and the sick person is well again ....i just thought wow what a concept
There have been other shows and movies that have somewhat dealt with this subject. Personally, I have no idea as to whether this would be possible--my skeptical side says a hopeful no as I am always leery of the repercussions of delving into such things as we tend to go overboard and use our knowledge for the wrong reasons.
But with all of the Scientific, Medical, Technical and other advances there have been, I can't say it will never happen.
I did come across a website on this subject that goes over possibilities, research as well as the social and ethical positives and negatives of mind transferance which I hope the rest of you will enjoy reading as well:
Mind Transfer
I have seen the movie several times and it would be dangerous to do...if it were possible...I wouldn't trust anyone to protect my body while my mind was in another body.
First thing I thought of was the Quantum Leap thing too. Pretty Wild. I'd want my Ziggy to be a little cute chicky though :) But I agree, that would be sort of crappy for the other person. I dont think I could hold on to who I was If i kept changing. Screw with your mind too much.
In my oppinion it would probably be something like staying in our natural bodies and drinking a special liquid to keep our bodies young. The thought of just transferring into a new body after the original gets too old is very unethical. Most people in higher positions in this world would most likely have a problem with it.
Well the idea is very interesting but i am unsure if i would like to be giving someone the short end of the stick one day.
i think that we probably could live forever because the guy in the movie hoped bodies like 3 or 4 times in a short period and not effected his mind at all but the question is.....
if we changed bodies all the time wouldnt that confuss ppl of who u are ?
The movie wasn't really about living forever but in a sense your mind would not your body.
Sounds crazy. In this body (or a new one) forever living? Could our minds handle this or would we go mad after a few hundred yrs.??? ps. Could I have a thinner body now?lol
Well the movie was about body exchange...for business meetings and such...alot of the people would transfer their minds to a willing party that would exchange bodies...and some even transfered to clones...but the main character was tricked and his body was used for a crime...if I remember right....and he has to figure out why and who did it to him.Not really about living forever or anything along those lines.
Traveling into the realm of science fiction...
...
I say anything is possible.
... but that would be extremely unlikely.
If you think on the term of metaphysics, switching spirits/souls with someone else is not the same as switching thoughts with someone else.
Perhaps you can exchange consciousness, but there is no way to transfer memory in the same way,... so therefore, if you were to exchange bodies with someone, you would inhabit the other body, but you would also inhabit all of their memories, and NONE of your old memories. ...
In other words:
If 'Frank' and 'Joe' switched bodies, Frank would inhabit Joe's body, but Frank would also have all of Joes memories, but none of his original memories. Therefore, it would be like Frank was always Joe, and Joe was always Frank.
DarklyDreamingDexter stated:
..."Most people in higher positions in this world would most likely have a problem with it."
I reply:
I am actually going to disagree with you on this. It is my personal opinion that people in higher positions in this world would LOVE a process where they could transfer their conciousness to another body, especially if it meant they would, in essence, live "forever". I believe, in fact, that we would see dictatorships popping up everywhere as those in power tried to STAY in power. I believe the ones who would have a problem with this would be those with little power.
YES! With all the coruption and greed in these higher positions, in any orginization, they would jump at it. Especially military. Think of the implications on that! I would be terrified to live in a world were this is possible.

i realize the movie was not about living forever but the movie put that thought into my head as in one scene in the bar the bartender said that supermodel over there is 108 years old and she only looked 25 and yes in the movie a crime was comitted with the guys body and when he bumped into people he knew he had to identify his self ...as being in a new body yes people would not reconize you for you unless you say hey remember when we did this or iam jane doe or what ever. and trollqueen if you x-changed with a death row inmate and they exicuted your original body with the other person in it you could have a whole new body and life thoe many may mistake you for this bad person your good personality would have to presivere in that case
I'd say it wouldn't burn out, but I think it'd definitely change so much over time that you're not really yourself anymore.
I think you would be fine but I could all so see people going crazy all so
I'm going to agree with him... but I'll add that it'd be boring as hell too... where's the challenge!
Well, I imagine it would be possible to live for a long time, but not forever. Unless some sort of cloning happened as well, eventually people would start to mistrust eachother, and people would start being killed. Like in scary movies when they all start to specilate on who the killer is.
its true it seems unlikely and the fact that the movie wasnt about living forever , but the theory in general about living forever is a good question, and i have to agree aswell that maybe our mind might die down or go crazy after a certian amount of time
I would wonder more if you transferred from one body to another does that mean they switched with you. If you are linked to your body at all if they got killed in your body would they die or would you and they would be returned. If you are switching does the other person have to let you or are you just killing their soul.
great pondering sweetblood, for if theory is correct no two things could inhabit one, so would the souls fight for control or would one fall short to even death, a great question to say. a soul that could take over control of an other body to hard to fathom. huh i must ponder this more.
i dont see it as us living forever its our current mind being copyed to a cd for lack of better terms
meaning the copied mind would only live what we currently know and never become better or learn new things
programs only know what we give them to know
