just wanted to hear peoples opinion on how they feel about Goethe´s romanticing the devil in his book Faust..
his view of the devil as a tempting force
I've never read or heard about this book, but I'll check it cause it sounds interesting.
As for the devil being described as a temptation, that was what I was taught in religion classes.
But to believe it or not guess it depends on your belifs.
Goethe's "Faust" was ENTIRELY based on the earlier version, Christopher Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus."
So really, its not his book.
Anyway, Marlowe's play is brilliant, and I was in it a couple of years ago. I love the element of the tempting element, along with the comedy of Mephistopholes as his companion, rather than apparent ruler.
The play of temptation, only thwarted by Faustus's naiive belief that he can repent when his life is over, and he is about to be taken... when the Devil owned him all along.
Methastopoles wasn't the Devil in this version, he was his 'assisitant' but the personifcation was still prevailant.
I must bow..
did´nt know it was a rewrite of christopher barlowe, but now that i do i must go and find it and get it read..
Marlowe was Shakespeares friend and literary adversary, and Faustus came out around 1562, the same time that plays such as "As You Like It" came to the stage.
I think that is you enjoyed Goethe's vesion, the you will love that of Marlowes, encaptivating and symbolic in a sence fo the religious ethics and beliefs of the time.... enjoy :-)
hm...I havent read it but thanks to you I have another book to find lol
To be honest Mephistopheles is not really the devil. Everyone uses different names to describe the devil, in actuality Satan was the first angel cast down from heaven - Lucifer, Mephistophles were also fallen angels cast down with Satan, so they are all different fallen angels. I know way of subject, but thought it was an interesting piece of info.
I just deleted about 6 postings from this thread that were all pointless bullshit.
"aint read it"
"dunno"
etc.
Could you please try and keep it on track. If you have nothing to add to the thread, dont post.
thanks for adding the film daire and cleanin up the posts :-)
great to hear that ppl have something to say about the subject and thx echo for lecturing me :-)
Wait I take that back. The Bacchae is my favorite. Top 10 for Faust though.
The devil romantisied is just showing the temptation he represents... Sin is sweet to commit, the devil alluring... why else would we do it?
Somnolent- Well, it was originally written by Marlowe... so if you like Faust, then i suggest you try reading and seeing Dr. Faustus.
NightCreature- Thats a good point. Meth was neer supposed to portray the Devil, he was more of a servant, or at least he was in Dr. Faustus... he was portrayed as much more of the grotesque element, walking on all fours etc, rather than a display of power.
In Dr. Faustus, or at least when we performed it a couple of years ago, the Devil was deliberately never shown... I suppose that in that sence, the imaginatio does a much better job than trying to actually personify.
and once again...VR has continued to prove itself to be a "cornucopia" of knowledge. An absolute plethera of artistic, well educated individuals...gathering together to share their ...aww hell...I just love hanging out here :) it's just damn fun.
