ok there seems to be some fairly intelligent ppl here I was wondering if any of you have studied or well tried to study the speed of dark or a way to measure dark matter . since will dark matter does comprise roughly 96% of the known universe and was just wondering if anybody has looked into it cause well I lack a degree in advanced quantaun electro dynamics to fully study

i took a course on the speed of light and Einstein's theories on the subject.

but i know little of research on Dark matter.

i would also like to know more about this.

I like what youve raised here, but sadly i dont think anyone here would know. Top scientists and quantum physicists might now but we know so little about dark matter in the first place that we wouldnt know where to start. Though I would be fascinated to find out.

hehe tru I just thought that with the whole myth of ther relationship of vampires and thier control or use of shadows even to the extent of travelling with in shadows that maybe somebody here has also looked in on the subject (myself I got into the subject when me and a friend came up with the I dea of a D.P.A.C. or darkness particle acelerator cannon think an negative lazer since walls can stop light from entering a room but not dark) ...

Yeah that is a fair point. Though of course a vampires power is limited to what they know, ahh interesting place to start and an interesting idea.
Its at times like this I wish I wa a physicist, this type of thing fascinates me, but alas music is my life.
However little hobbies like this make for interesting reading.

yes dark matter since darkness apears to have mass and is the known oppisite of light it is believed that there must be dark particles ( darkons or dark matter) the reverse of a proton or light particle

Technically dark matter is something of a filler within the universe. Its added into calculations to balance out the galactic weight and mass as evident in galactic orbits.

As for its speed, there is no one set speed for dark matter.

If you look at the name given to it;

Dark matter.

What it is , is a substance that does not radiate light energy so can not be seen through telescopes. People are made of dark matter if you want to get really technical as people do not radiate light.

Cosmic dark matter is still an X factor in a lot of equations.

Its very existence is still theoretical at this point.

What I'm more interested in is antimatter, antigravity, white holes, etc. I used to be into astrophysics. The concepts behind these is mind-boggling.

Firstly, about 23% of matter is supposed to be dark matter(the other 73% is dark energy). Secondly, it isn't called dark matter because represents the fundamental particles of "darkness"..but because we have no way to detect it. Dark matter is not a settled issue though, there are plenty of competeing theories(such as modified Newtonian mechanics) which explain the same phenomena.

People are not made of dark matter, they are made of atom, which do radiate light energy. If we were composed of dark matter, we wouldn't interact with light at all..we would be invisible. Humans, at average body temperature, radiate most strongly infrared at about 10 microns. Incidentally, there is no set speed of dark matter.

The website earlier referenced was either a joke, or a very poorly represented hoax. Try reading a little further down the page about the cats and bread and butter. :)

Vamperellia, dark matter is very different from darkness. The darkness you refer to is simply the absence of light. The 'black matter', more appropriately, that we are referring to is actual matter that doesn't emit light. Its existence is hypothesied because of the gravity fields that exist in a spaec where no detectable light is being emitted. Yes, it is similar to the concept of black holes, though the gravity fields are less intense.

actually the aformentioned site is not a joke it is a personal site built by a group of ppl stufying dark theory and as I said before it as at times maddening trying to study dark particles since we as humans or a subspeices there of are built to see light ... like when you look down at your keyboard you don't see the keyboard but how light acts and interacts with the keyboard ... so as you can imagine studying something that is basically invisable to you .... is quite difficult

And mistywillow, there are particles called tachyons, which modern physics acknowledges the possible existence of, which travel no slower than the speed of light. But that isn't the topic of this thread.

if the speed of light is the fastest speed then couldn't the speed of dark be non-existant? if darkness is the lack of light then either the speed of dark matter is so fast that it is faster than light or it just doesnt move and is masked by light?

That's pretty close to what physicists are trying to figure out. Is it composed entirely of particles that don't even follow the known laws of physics? There are a number of unanswered questions about it.

tacyon particles are theorized to be able to lirerally move through time it self ...... while the protons that make up light matter do have a recorded top speed ... well actually it's a constant speed unless it is interupted by an outside force ...such as a quantum singularity or black hole ... and on the black hole thing the fact that they prevent light from escaping adds some credance to the whole speed of dark thing .... it is quite possible that dark matter is has kind of a reverse speed sorta like gravitiy ... like how fast does a single dark particle consume light ... or something to that effect

Well I don't know but the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second... so I'd have to conclude that the speed of dark is faster because it's always there first.... Hmmmmm..... *disappears deep in thought*

That site was not even meant to fool anyone, it's simply a joke. This is what a real website on the subject look like. Notice it is at Harvard edu, not freak face.com. :)

Also, no physicist thinks Dark Matter might not follow the laws of physics(though would kind of negate physics)..they just think it behaves differently from known types of matter. But the types of matter may postulated through our knowledge of partical physics.

that's kinda what I think if there was a way to get a film fast enough you might be able to figure it out by simply turning the light on and off in a room and slowing the film down ... tho I am sure somebody has tried that

I apologize that I neglected to include the link in the last post, so here it is.

Darkness is just the absense of light..unlike light, it is not made of particles. It isn't made up of anything in particular. The only difference between a room where the light is off and one where it is on..is that in the room with no light..there is nothing shooting photons everywhere.

Dark matter is the stuff that is not anything. Its everything. It is the stuff that is used to create. Its not going anywhere. Therefore no speed.

You speak wisely DarksBlade.... For every action there's an equal opposite reaction so if there is a speed of light, why not a speed of dark??... But it and the whole anti-matter thing is just so damn complicated!! LOL.

There is a speed of light..but equal and opposote reactions in no way translate to a speed of dark. I'm not sure why this is so hard to comprehend. Light is created by photons..a lack of them means no light. What it does not mean is a replacement with something else..dark is an absense..not some sort of physical fill-in. No substance in this case, means no speed.

Once again, there is a difference between darkness and dark matter. Darkness is, as mrd put it, the absence of light. Light is in fact made up of photons. Darkness is simply the absence of this energy. Dark matter is something completely different. What is it that you people aren't understanding?

Well, darkness and dark matter are two different things.

For dark matter, unless it is stimulated or propelled, it won't move at all.

Darkness, as in the absence of light cannot have a speed as it isn't an object. It is a lack thereof. Light is an object, affected by gravity, the medium it travels through, etc. Example: light travels slower in water and in high air pressure. The speed of light as recorded at 186,000 miles per second is only when it is in a vacuum. Darkness cannot have a speed because it isn't an object, it isn't affected by medium, gravity, etc. Therefore, it cannot have a speed.

i don't know, i'm not sure there is such a thing as the speed of dark matter. light travels to reach something, but darkness just falls when the light is unable to reach what your target is. there is no possible way to figure that out unless you study it like einstein did with light

what I mean by my reverse speed / consumtion theory is ... if you in outer space and shine a flash light you going to tell me that beam will go on for ever at what point does the darkness devoure the light.... get what I'm saying

Well, firstly, the beam would stop when the flashlight stopped providing energy for it. On the other end, technically, the light would never stop travelling unless it hit a solid piece of matter. What exactly are you asking?

Ahh... okay. That was what you were asking. Yes, in outer space, a total vacuum, the beam will travel on forever or until it hit a solid piece of matter, as I said before. In a total vacuum, we can't see light anyway. You never wondered why space was so dark despite all of the stars? When you shine a flashlight in an empty room, devoid of particles in the air, you can't see the beam, only the object the light shines on. We can't detect light unless it shines on solid matter. THe photons themselves would travel on forever into space, though.

Until such time that they hit a rock, dust particles, a planet, dense gas, etc.

So it seems I've answered your question. Or did you wish to debate this further?
