We all believe Vampires to be Predators.
Who are their prey? How do they Hunt?
Where? When? Why?
Usually people think Vampires advocate predation on humans. Some people believe that, others believe that Vampires prey on other sources of the animal kingdom. Others believe in the psy vampires who feed on the energy of living things.
What DO YOU think?
The type of prey, location, time, etc. really depends on the type of vampire. Each has different aspects which influence their behavior. As far as condoning feeding, that all depends on whether or not you believe a vampire to have a soul or a conscience. Traditionally, vampires were little more than reanimated corpses or demons, so I doubt they'd have any regrets about feeding off of whatever they came across.
In my opinion, vampires feed off of energy. They can can get it from blood or chi. What ever they were made to consume, they will hunt. I believe that a vampire that drinks blood can obtain it from any prey they wish. They might wish to obtain it from someone who is strong or pure. The psyvamp might wish to feed from the same or they might enjoy their meal more from someone who is strong willed and happy.
What might the aspects be that influence their behavior? I'd love to know your take on that.
As for the thought of Vampires having no soul/ or conscience....youre def. right. Back in the day that is exactly what people thought because they had no idea of the unknown and they feared it...so they labeled it as evil...basically.
I would imagine Vampires look for their prey at night, maybe on a specific time, atmosphere....
I know of Vampires who prefer to have their prey by force, and they consider themselves sadists and practice BDSM. they have certain requirements and conditions about their feeding alternatives....thats why I ask about others, it would be interesting to know.
Combine the best sex you have ever had with the greatest food you have ever tasted and that is how a vampire hunts. They love to hunt what is more attractive to them. Someone can get by on burgers, but love to have steak instead.
The different vampire types, and therefore the aspects that define them depend on where in the world you look. Cultural and religious differences influence the legends greatly. A Strix (ancient Rome) is a female vampire/witch who have deliberately become cannabalistic predators through their association with black magic and have the form of a blood-drinking bird.
A Civateteo (Pre-European Mesoamerica) is the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth.
It's mostly appearance, feeding habits such as preferred prey and hunting styles which distinguishes one type from another. You are correct that hunting is primaily done at night, though this would have more to do with people's fear of the dark, I suspect.
Interesting, I never knew that. I guess you learn something everyday ;)
No day has been wasted if you've learned something new. I firmly believe that, and I'm looking forward to hearing more opinions on this topic.
Although some might not agree, I do believe feeding should be a pleasurable experience. Like Dezeus said...you have to enjoy your meal. Although not everything might be about sex or seducing your prey for a good time, it makes it easier on both.
I have also heard of people feeding off of animal blood not to harm humans. And some even feed off of the fresh killed animals.
Speaking from experience, I don't think feeding necessarily has to be linked to sex to be enjoyed, not that it doesn't often end up that way.
As for feeding on animals, there's several cases that I've heard of like that. Whether it's so that nobody is harmed, or just from a lack of any other source, I couldn't say.
I was just trying to associate it with a sensation. You could also relate it to drinking cold water on a hot day and feeling refreshed by having your thirst quenched.
That's a good analogy. I tend to need a certain connection with my donors, so there's usually a bit more to it than that for me, but if you want to put t simply, that works.
in the old days it was believe that vampyres stalked their pray and forced them to bend to their will...
these days vampyres do not need to hunt...so many are willing to give themselves up to vampyres because they feel its romantic, that they will be "turned" and live forever...that they will become one of the dead..
vampyres need not to hunt for their next source of energy, nor do they have to fight for their existance...the only thing vampyres have to hunt anymore is mfor those who are true to them
A pranic/psychic vampire can usually be found around large groups.....clubs, festivals, and concerts. In these particular settings the energy is high and a psy-vampire needs only to feed off of the ambient energy instead of individuals. Those who are aware, usually like to go out during a full moon, when energy is exceptionally heightened.
Like any other animal, vampires choose to predate to follow their sexual instinct. Beyond the starvation for flesh, or to feed upon crimson ambrosia, is an innate craving for an invigorating sexual encounter.
The vampires of legend fed for different reasons, be it revenge, a requirement of whatever evil they received their power from, or simply to sate their hunger. The human vampires of today could have any number of motivations for their feeding, usually it's from a wlling donor, though it's the ones that end in a grisly murder that make the papers.
It all depends on who you are... and what you like to taste. Some prefer humans or amimals. But if you are an energy vampire, then it's as simple as walking into a haunted house that gives you energy. Some prefer living energy, but others prefer unworldly.
Any others care to enlighten us with their knowledge?
I would like to hear more about this subject.
What would be other tactics to lure in the prey? (other than what we have discussed)
Do you think maybe hypnotic trance? and can we call it murder even, if in fact the vampire kills his prey while feeding?
I don't know if anyone said this but it all depends on the vampire itself.... From what I understand they can either go in groups or by themselves.... Some (like the Italian Vampire) Don't feed off of human blood but of animals and tend to move less and stay in a certain area for a long period of time. Others go and hunt humans and are drifters...... That is what I know....

Stabb,
Now that you speak of psy vampirism; I heard of a story in which a group of vampires walked into a club looking for a victim. They found their prey and lured her in, and she was found then lifeless. It is said that they drained all her energy and therefore her heart gave out.
You would think she probably had a heart attack, or a stroke, or some type of medical condition, but the autopsy results were clear and nothing was found.
Some think it could have been a silent killer, which leaves no traces for the forensics to follow…One will never know, we can only speculate. But it is strongly believe, by those who knew of the incident, that the group who she was with was oozing with the stereotypical gothic look.
This is just a story I heard, I thought I’d share it with you…maybe can use it to learn from it or to clear some points.
I for one do not agree with the fact that they stereotype a group of people, murderers or not, by the way that they dress, look, or act. Who knows, it might have been vampires for real, or it might not have been.
What do you think?
Indeed. Therin lay the crux of my frustrations. Disbelief from a blinkered viewpoint.
It was as if I had been told that the sun shines all day everywhere in the world, by someone that lives in the arctic.
I would have to agree.... There are some that just rampage and do as they wish with no care of the consiquence..... But that is just how they live....
Well, if this is how they wish to continue to live, they will be running up against a sizeable portion of the community, who feel that media exposure is now a given consequence of the inspired popularity of the culture.
As a result, there is a need for a unified and dignified front to be presented to the world at large, because they are watching and wondering and the rest of this decade will determine the place that vampyres will hold in society- As a legitimate sub-culture and semi-religious function of humanity.
well, i believe that they prey off blood of what ever is living. since they have no soul, they would need no energy
Stabb I agree with you. I think that nowadays they are given more attention due to the media and movies and instead of good press they are made notorious and infamous for all legends and any little thing that comes up.
While I think that the media is a good thing for us to learn more about the matter, I also think it to be bad.
I know I read once, and posted it in a thread called myths and facts about vampires, that there was an incident in london once where a girl was claimed to have been bitten by a vampire in a dark alley, back in the day.
From then on people lurking in the shadows, vampires or not, were accused of vampirism and abuse to their victims.
The girl was said to have died, a prey of a monstrous act. This was all over the newspapers, and people whispered to eachother. These are the things that make Vampires notorious....I think it is true what they say -> "Bad news travel fast"...when have you heard something nice about vampires and their prey?
I always say vampires as more of a parasite then a predator because if they do it right they don't kill many people.
LOL The irony, I feel, is bittersweet and sorrowful.
I suppose one ought to be thankful that a fascination with immortality drove such great works of fiction through the ages, ones which have brought a romantic air to the concept, overriding the fear with lust.
But even images which portray the villainy of vampires still resound a note of comfort for the viewer. Society is left with the impression that they are somehow safe and secure, protected by bands of warriors in the fight against the demons.
But reality is all too different.
LOL I think you hit the nail on the proverbial head, DB, so I'll keep quiet. ;)
But I will say that I believe that even a vampyre has a soul, perhaps not one which has the same connection to the world as others, but still, it must have a consciousness and by my opinion, a soul.
In reality people live breathe and eat with vampires..... Unfortunatly they are to blind to see that.....
Unfortunately, sensationalism is what sells papers. "Dog bites man isn't news, but man bites dog is." seems to be the way of things.
wow....i don't have anything to say cuz you all already said what i was going to
(mostly Xander)
that is cool tho, thought i'd at least post to say i agree with the things said
it is not predation we seek it is more or less experimentation like rats in a maze we sit and watch them choose the fate of society
Switch, if you could...elaborate more on that theory of yours?
the question of what is the difference between a predator and a parasite needs to be raised here, in nature predators essentially cause death to their "prey", whereas parasites may or may not eventually cause death
all nourishment (except for milk and honey)is obtained with violence to lifeforms of one kind or another, just that when one cannot self identify with the loss or pain or death of say a cow or sheep, or plant even for that matter, that one can say the word homicide and murder, yes since humans have highly somplex consciousness, the demise of one human is on the larger scale a greater loss , evolutionarily, that is, if one looked it that way
it is a matter of perspective really
vampire is a form that is built to feed on the life energies of other beings, directly, something that humans do in a round about and indirect manner, the many layers of denial in between actually serving to buffer the nature of violence of the actual process of acquiring the food,
a few days spent around slaughterhouses may be most enlightening for this
nothing wants to die, you can see it their eyes, that look is the same for horses, cows and human beings
we are all predators or parasites of one kind or another,
the primary occupation of the universe being eating
this is perhaps the wisdom that lies in gratitude, for what is recieved,
predator is about snatching and denying that gratitude, which is also an interesting thing,
there is a whole book that a very interesting man called Fyodor Dostoevsky has written called Crime And Punishment that is really the last word on the right to predation
this thread is really about that perhaps, the right or qualification of predation, the question of 'to what extent', the example of the woman who was drained to heart faliure and so on.
there is also the matter of power here
morality is a lame horse without power to make it real
laws are about power
all except the real laws of action and consequence
predator has to become prey such is the way of the universe isnt it
to balance
and vampire is really in essence an form whose primary purpose whether known or not, to establish balance and open the clogged and constricted threads of energy
to redistribute and redirect
though we are vampires, we exsist in a human form and must therefor follow the human codex.
lureing the pray... well I make sure that I have only one donor at the time, and I ask for his accept to prey on him.. usuall get to know the person, his or hers behavior, because out of behavior we are able to predict their reactions.
unfortunatly there are some smartasses who has seen one to many Hollywood productions, that they just do not seem to get the fact that you must show respect to all living beeings.
that is at least my view on it.
