What is it about Mythology that you like? Any type of mythology are you interested in most?
The Olympians-Greek mythology, mainly, but all mythology is interesting.
I like all mythology. I find all of it interesting because all mythology is unique to every country.
I agree; there are so many different categories in mythology it would be difficult if not impossible to thoroughly investigate them all with any real degree of authority. Vampiric mythology is interesting, as well as cryptozoologic mythology.
I completely agree. To do a through investigation of each one would take years. cryptozoologic mythology is very interesting.
Certain mythologies share elements, as well as deity.. demi gods, and such, the names vary, but the characters stay the same.
Greek mythology has always held a place in my mind...
I do believe there are multiple gods, elements, etc.
Greek mythoolgy has always held a place in my heart, yet exploration of other societies and their dieties seem to fasinate my interest alot. Native americans, Eyptian, druid, and countless other cultures that have mystery to a point on the life and structure of the culture.
Greek mythoolgy has always held a place in my heart
love all the gods and goddess to have lived or been around.
Depends on what the government wants the world concentrating on at the moment via media, video games or books.
Greek mythology seems to be the popular sensation at the moment in said respects.
my self.. i like Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Japanese...
there has always been a huge fasination in these mythos and believes ranging every where from the tales told to the creatures and god in the stories....
i like the over all to think of why they were put there in the first place.. and what would it be like if they were in the life now .. our minds and culture have killed them or drove them all out or under... it makes me sad to know this...
sorry random off topic rant .. but its what i believe.. so there ya go
I started off listening to stories about powerful beings before I came to know they were called myths. I enjoyed Greek Mythology alot. For some reason, I can't seem to remember any stories right now. Nothing stays, it's just the moral of the story that makes an impact on me. I loved the stories on the Greek Goddesses and Gods. They are the most popular, yes. I like stories with a horror element to it. Like maybe that of supernatural creatures, ghosts and such. Egyptian mythology is also amazing, especially the ones concerning the Gods of the Underworld. Yeap.
Slavic mythology, Northern mythologies....well I guess I love hem all, but I preffer those I mentioned because there is much more mysticism in it, while they are not known so much as others like Greek or Roman...
I love all mythologies too, and see the connections between them all. My favorites are Greek and Egyptian.
Who doesn't want to learn about history by being entertained? That's a huge draw to the subject, getting to sound well informed because you know a story that has been told and retold for centuries/millennia. These are our archetypes in the most raw we can find, 1st, 2nd, 5th retooling and recycling. That's why I personally pay attention to mythology. Besides the love a great story.

The coven of Legendary Mythology has many pages about lots of different mythology. I created most of them for Freyja and had to do a lot of research. The Roman and Greek mythology is to me, by far, the most interesting due to the fact they are very similar. They have mostly the same gods and goddesses and such but with different names. If you have the gumption to take a look at the pages, you'll see how they were cross referenced. It was very interesting to create the pages because I learned things I'd never learned in school about some of them.
Zeus gradually became disgusted with man and decided to completely destroy the species. Of course Prometheus, the Greek titan associated with the creation of man, passed word onto his son and his son's wife. Once the rain began to fall the two packed a chest full of provisions and climbed in. After ten days the rain stopped and their chest came to rest at the top of a mountain. After offering a sacrifice to Zeus, and praying to the Titaness of Justice these two succesffully brought about the restoration of mankind.
remember...the people of europe and southwest asia all come from the indo-european peoples (about 5000 years ago). so you have alot of similarities between various gods of different mythos, is that they actually are the same gods with just different names. the elder germanic god "tiwaz" is phonetically very similar to "zeus"and they share the same domains.
there are alot of sources available to research this, and its something that fascinates me.

I think my favorites will always the the true philosophers and initiates in the ways of the Great Mysteries. Scholars like that of Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Porphyry Aristophanes, Apollonius of Tyana and several others who were amongst the privilaged few who were part of the Mysteries of the past.
More information regarding that area of mythology may peruse my journal section entitled: "Freemason Liason" to further study Plato and his life.
Greek, Hindu, and other types of Mythology are good reads to me.
galfriday, i completely agree...
have you studied jung? you sound alot like him.
im very interested in the beliefs of the ancient norse/germans/saxons as well as egyption.
that is far too limiting as i find it all of interest, but that is where i spend most of my reading.
my question might be: where does mythology end and religion begin? most think that mythology is the study of defunct religions, but im a follower of the germanic beliefs myself. i feel closest to freyr and freya.
~W~
I follow Freya as my Matron, so naturally Norse would have a certain draw. I am obsessed with it. I read everything I can get my hands on.
Greek Gods. Always fasinated me since my youngest years, and most are deities in Pagan cultural beliefs.
all mythology plays parts in our current lives. respect of once gods or human feats of stories told to us by other cultures.
I love to learn about Mythology and hear the stories... or are they legends? I like Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Mayan-Aztec, Native American... There are many among cultures all over the country but I believe that they are all connected in some way. They all have some hidden message or some lesson to be learned.
All mythology from ancient Babylonia to Egypt to Greek to MesoAmerican, Europe, Asia, Australia and other parts of Ocenia and my country Canada and the Native Americans from both Canada and the States cause of my love of different myths, mystical mythical beasts and beings around the world cross time I created my group in power punks that is private
ive always had a strong interest in the germanic/norse beliefs....
of late ive felt more and more affinity for the ancient egyption beliefs.
this may hit some folks wrong, but i mean no disrespect: i also find the mythology of the old testament to be fascinating. i think there are alot of clues in the old testament pointing towards the actual origin of the hebrew beliefs.
~W~
you shouldn't be offended by that, even most jewish religious scholars will tell you that several parts of the old testament aren't supposed to be interpreted as fact but as moral lessons
true, but still...there are many that for them, genesis is fact, and i dont wish to step on others beliefs. its just about respect.
~W~
well there are many things that some people could be offended by. people just need to realize "ok, hes not trying to be mean, Hes just having his own opinion.
Oh that's easy Socrates...
Credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, he is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon, and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes. Many would claim that Plato's dialogues are the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates to survive from antiquity.[2]
Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who also lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method, or elenchus. The latter remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions, and is a type of pedagogy in which a series of questions are asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at hand. It is Plato's Socrates that also made important and lasting contributions to the fields of epistemology and logic, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains strong in providing a foundation for much western philosophy that followed.
As one recent commentator has put it, Plato, the idealist, offers "an idol, a master figure, for philosophy. A Saint, a prophet of the 'Sun-God', a teacher condemned for his teachings as a heretic."[3] Yet, the 'real' Socrates, like many of the other Ancient philosophers, remains at best enigmatic and at worst unknown.Mmm sounds like me Hehe!
To concur with a majority of participants in this thread, I am interested in all forms of mythology, from Shinto to Greek and everything in between. However, I have a particular interest foremost in Celtic mythology (due to my Irish ancestry), as well as Teutonic. With the Teutonic myths, I love how--like the Viking culture itself--the gods and beliefs are violent and one can only reach the halls of Valhalla through death in battle. Die a young man in the glory of combat, and dine with Odin; live a long life and die of old age or sickness, you go to the realm of Hel. A fascinating concept as far as I'm concerned.
i like greek and norse mythology...i enjoy the stories...wish they'd do more movies based on it...
I also often wonder how the whole world at once believed in these stories of old and then just stopped...what was the factor that made people give up the old beliefs (besides being forced as many were)
im also interested in the roman beliefs...
not the "greko roman" mixing of beliefs that occurred after the empire took over the greek speaking areas.
its actually quiet interesting, but hard to find material on in english.
~W~
Vinzent I know what you mean. I really should honor the Irish part of my heritage and study the folklore
I study all mythology it is interesting and I love to learn new facts of history
I think that if you want to be creative reading history and mythology is a good way to get ideas
you can certainly learn a great deal about a culture from the study of its beliefs.
shame that most mythology that we study was actually recorded in the christian/moslem era. we learn only what was deemed ok to read by the powers that were, and also we might get a glimpse of their beliefs, but dont really know much about their celebrations, rituals, etc.
~W~
well that and things like the mongol invasions which destroyed histories and records in places like china and India
