So I have way to much free time, mostly because I go days on end without sleep, which is why I have so much time to think about all these near-pointless topics.

So now I pose this question for everyone to ponder....

Say the apocalypse comes around when it's predicted by the Mayans (or was it the Aztecs?), and most of the human race dies. What do you think it would be like for the rest of us, other than complete shit? Would we all struggle in the effort to build the human race back up, and start over from nothing, or do we just give up and live out the rest of our lives?

Why the thought would even begin to cross my mind, I have no idea, but low and behold, here we are. :P

So let's hear what everyone thinks.

(And I'll apologise to the mods ahead of time, in case it is deemed, for whatever reason, that this thread should be removed.)

I suggest reading Stephen King's "The Stand", thats the general idea of what i think would happen, whether by natural or artificial means of bringing about the apocalypse...the people who would be scattered all across the world would come together into 2 seperate groups in their continents, with opposing goals for the remainder of humanity, because everyone who is left is not going to all be "good people". One or the other has to dominate in the end, because it is in human nature to desire power over others. At least something to this affect might happen, but then again humanity might surprise me and pull together and make the best of a shitty situation.

Well for me and all them that I know are fighters and survivors, we have discussed this very question, and if alive we would fight, struggle whatever it takes to do just that survive and rebuild and try to live to the best that we can of course there would be amuch harsher way of discipline do to the fact whom to trust and who is really ready to fight for their own and the human races survival- so alot of people may not want to be apart of that yet if you intend to live after all is said and done you have to be alot stronger in how you survive- it will not be easy and there may be alot of people who need help so I mean there are alot of things to consider IF that was to happen, just my thoughts and opinon on it

It would be terrible.

No creature comforts. Some semblance of life. A struggle for food and shelter everyday. The inevitable lust for power of a few. And the whole thing starts again

As you didn't mention any cause of Apocalypse, I shall disregard the Nuclear one which is unlikely anyway.

I think it will be handled the same way humans have with all the more recent 'catastrophes'. The tsunami, the twin towers and so on. Some people brood on it, before it is all forgotten and one continues the way they did before it all. Humans are like virii and will promptly begin reproducing like hell. Human nature.

well, actually life might get normal.

Leaders with powers would never be killed.

The leaders would be looked to how to get copper out of mineral rocks, and all sorts of technological advances lost in the apocalypse.

Of course once the leader has done all they can do, then the power struggle would commence again, when the peace has been built. Humans are petty, they want power, but before that time comes...

it would be as the way things should, a leader would be recognized and utilized and never undermined, well at least for a short time there would be peace.

Cytler, you said that it would be unlikely that we would have a nuclear war...ummm,I cannot believe this. How you come to this i would like to know ..please message me!

we will rise up Theban, because of open minded people like you. We wiil find a way to leave this planet. I am a convict of my convictions limiting future applications based on current science. I know to much to know better.

Yes, the whole Iran manifest destiny to have nuclear weapons. We will have to go to war to stop them from building them, and once at war, and nukes involved, Theban might be right, a nuclear apocalypse we are not out of the woods yet.

There will be no Nuclear Apocalypse. Iran is being watched, and even if they were to fire one, none will return fire, because such an action would condemn them in the public opinion, and lower them to the likes of the muslims. Instead, the hit would be taken, and the world would unite against the lone aggressor. Simple politics. Iran is not, and never will be, strong enaugh to pose any real threat to the entire world.

well, I dunno, firing a nuke or two or three , or 5 might devestate the earth, it all depends upon payload of the bomb.

I think they haven't the power to enrich the uranium necessary to build a sufficient payload to destroy the earth. I think the Secretary of State mentioned that it would take 80 years for them to enrich the uranium needed to build their nukes. They just don't have enough centrifuges.

But I wouldn't believe anything the govt has to say on that matter. All threats should be acknowledged.

I mean even if they do not make a 150 megaton bomb, if they point a semi nuke say a kilaton bomb at the san andreas fault, the earth could be devestated by california sliding into the sea. The whole ring of fire under the pacific,

if a nuke tapped into the energy of the pacific rim volcano system and let it out...

But those targets must be specifically targeted with the intention of ruining the world. That would make no sense.
As for the amount of regular nuclear detonations required to destroy the world... well. The total numer of nuclear detonations to to date are 2052 blasts.
I think it would be more needed then five more.
The next step in Mass Destruction would be the Neutron Bomb, that eliminates biological creatures, but leaves structures standing.

Well Ctyler does that include nukes hitting power plants...my country is so small it wouldnt take many to destroy it..there would be no one to run the power plants..so they would go up anyway...and where did you get that figure from?

AGH! Sorry. That number was incomplete. Those were the number of nuclear tests. The total amount of detonations are 2,400 with a total yield of 565 megatonne.

The numbers are from the Johnston Database Of Nuclear Tests.

To me it depends on who lives through it....If people of high faith survive they would fight to rebuild the human race......If criminals survive they would probably just be happy to be free and live out their lives.

I agree with one poster on this thread. It will depend on who lives through it. If the best and the brightest of the human race survive, then we will have hope in restoring humanity to the planet. If the worse of humanity remains, then time will tell what will happen.

I think that no one knows what is gonna happen, and to say so would be purely speculation. So, that being said, We are humans it is in our DNA to be the top of the food chain. We will live again as we have done in the past. Never know it could be a new ice age that wipes us out.

I was talking about this the other night with my boyfriend on the drive home.
It would be weird/amazing if we survive such destruction but if the world everyone once knew suddenly changed so drastically it would certainly be a complete disaster for the human race.
I secretely wished I would survive but all at once I wish not to ever see something like that happen.
Is beyond any capacity of thought, in my head, I just can't face the possibility of it happening during my lifetime.
I would hope humanity would unite and better ourselves thus giving us a fair chance of survival.
But perhaps it would be too late even then.

Mostly likely we would return to the hunter gathering modes of our ancesters..Wheterh the best and the brightess were here or the worst of the vile were here...It would also depend on how many people were left...I doubt ever body lacks the imagination needed to servive something like this...As some think this has been well done some many different times in ficton... You really should look up some of the books on this like S. Kings "The Stand" or a book called "The Day after Tomorrow", I don't recall the author of that book.....I tend to think the best about people till I'm shown differently...It is a good question... Well worth examing.........

Even though the neutron bomb doesn't exist it has already hit. Most of us are out of touch, micro waving fish sticks we didn't even catch. I think the survivor episodes indicate how feeble we have become. We are like brains in jars, ordering take out.

We all would have to pull together, like on survivor, everyine has something to give. Do you think I would write on here if I wsn't draining you of all your knowledge? And CTyler, you deserve a claok of a graduate student for some of the things you wing out with.

BUt most of those "tests" are done underground in dry areas, so it doesn't get into the water supply, or in the atmosphere, and the payload of bombs these days is many megatons. We have perfected how to destroy life, I just hope when that eventually happens we do not also destroy all the magnificence of how to preserve life. If that does happen, you got the cockaroach scenario.

The lizards and reptiles had their day of the dinasaur

mamals have had their shot but were too smart

and then insects will rule the earth in the Apocalyptic scenario, for insects are impervious to radiation and do not rquire the light of the sun to exist. The nuclear winter that would ensue because of the blockage of the sun because of the dust in the air after hte bombs, hey, cockaroaches, well, they could just continue to eat floorboards, molding and dry wall, like they've been doing for all this time.

And with the Earth sticking around because of the sun existing another 5 billion years or so, based on estimates of other's suns colors and stages before they go super nova, I think in a couple of hundre millions years the insects are going to be on archeological digs saying, what kind of bone is this? It isn't in our book of god, just like the dinasaurs aren't mentioned in the bible more than just as freaks of nature.

There could be a spawning of intelligence from out of the seas. With sharks unable to get cancer, radio activity also probably in my best guesstimate, they are unaffected by radiation, and in 40 million years they could climb out of the sea as once our forbears had done to populate the earth on land, or they could just stay in the sea , getting lessons from dolphins and smarter whales.

I think that if anyone would survive the end of the world that no one at the moment would really think about building the human race back up. People would be to preoccupied finding shelter and some sort of food.. any way to survive really. But when someone would actually think of reproducing many people wouldn't try because there would be many different levels of society and different cultures. Many people wouldn't accept that.

if humans would survive, and some will, for there are perhaps thousands of gentically perfect people in underground bunkers, who will carry the torch for the rest of us. However, life on earth would be different in an apocalyptic scenario based on nuclear holocaust.

It would be like it once was, like some have maintained, the hunter gatherers days and barter, but we really wouldn't live very long. I'd say 20 if you were lucky from all that radioactivity.

If we can find the cure for cancer, and have that knowledge saved underground too, we might be able to stave off an earlier death, but I mean the equipment needed to continually need to transfuse blood out of cancers, and having few blood types left to pick doners from, I mean, eventually, there would be just one dominant blood type.

But those perfect genetic specimens who are prepared for doomsday, I don't think they'd look so hot walking around bald from fall out. Every time I shave my head I look like I have got cancer or something. I once heard someone say on the subway:

"Has he got AIDS?"

to not to be in the form we were made would estrange our actions from righteousness, life would not be ideal, but it would be life none the less, a short lived one at that.

Thanks for the praise, Vampyreinthesun. I just have a brain for sucking up little nuggets of stuff one generally have no need for. But its good for conversation.

Anyway, the notion that it would depend on the people left behind...
I think a possibility is the Mad Max scenario, where there are people who create, and people who take. It's easier for those who take what they want and do not have anyone to depend on them. If it came to it, I even think I would end up as of the latter. And after a world encompassing apocalypse, I think any policing entity would ever be able to control the pillaging and razing. There is strength in creation, but there is also a strength in the complete disregard of the peril of others.

Well Vlad, Interesting thing to thinked about. If the world ends. And there would be a couple humans left. It all depends on what sex they are. Liked if there two males or two girls don't count on it. Unless we find some other away to have baby the way frogs do. I heard that frogs are able to change sexs are whatever. So then we might start the world back over. But perhaps we would be little more smarter about stuff we do. But I think terrible really if we do that. Because we be all alone in the world. No animals or anything to comfort us. No food or anything so eventually would died out.

well paranoid is fear unfound, we would gave to be on a constant state of alert like war time, in a way it would be a paranoia of sorts, but it would be valid fear, and therefore not paranoia.

We once had brains the size of walnuts Mikhail, and that was less than 40 million years ago. All mammals arose out of the furry little things that scurried under dinasaurs feet 200 million years back. Shark could evolve into a shark tale scenario, given enough time, the first conversation the sharks could have be, would be something like, yeah fish, remember what grandfish said, about humans tasted like?

What is a human? the other shark would say.

It would be eerie if they ever do make the neutron bomb, all those buildings standing, empty and books flipping in the wind.

and as far as generating a new race from a handful of men and women, it would be impoossible if the numerbs were too low. Take the Pjorski horse that almost went extinct. They've been brought back even though their numbers were down to like 160.

Cloning would the only way to go if our numbers got too low

well remember you were so quick to agree that insects would take over the earth, yet insects you could smush with your pinky, a shark on the other hand....

I already answered the underground bunker thing in the Mayan topic, the interspace voyager probe is headed towards. There are very many diff doomsday scenarios, I was just putting forth the nuke one cuz someone had said it wasn't going to happen.

There was one Star Trek motion picture based on a robot designed by man that goes throughout space collecting information. The designer was a man named Kirk, it just so happens that this voyager probe had mated with an alien probe and had become stronger than from the original late 1960's star trek episode, and when it pulled up to earth it was like collecting planets inside of it's new dimensions. Voyager decreed that Earth was impoerfect because humans were imperfect and there fore had to be destroyed. The original philosophy of the probe was fused with the alien one, and so it was perverted from it's mission.

James Tiberius Kirk says to Voyager, Voyager, I am your creator right?

Yes Kirk, you are my creator

That is a lie, I am James T Kirk, the man who created you was named James Q Kirk (or something) you just made an error, you are imperfect

Then the probe freaks out, thought it was perfect all these years, and then it has to follow it's programming to destroy all things imperfect, and since it is imperfect it sets off an atromic bomb in it's hull, fortunately Scotty had Theban's molecular transmitter ready to beam Voyager off of the enterprise and blow up in space.

Voyager in science fiction almost destroyed the earth, a machine (from the "conversatrion with God" II topic on artifical intgelligence), it is ironic, that this new Voyager probe may find the reason why we may have to get underground. But since that was erased for too many people that that science was baseless, I will end the thread on that discussion here.

I know you had alluded to the bunker topic, but I don't want a fine thread like this one to be RIA'd because I alluded to something which killed a thread before, but since you pressed I took a chance....

Ok but what really does movies ie..hollywood have to do with the end of the world and why just the one theory yes we have a way to distroy our planet true enugh tens times over. I was thinking more along the lines of another thing doing us in or at least weeding us down like a epidemic and not HIV/AIDS that virus is far to unstable to be spread fast nor does it kill fast..I was looking back and thinking something along the lines of a plague.. something fast hard hitting and also something they don't have a cure for..then some people would have perhaps a natural immunity while others would die..I have always seen this as more liely of the dooms day sinerios..it doesn't involve the complet distruction of the planet nor does it gaurantee that we will stay the dominate species...who really knows what could happen as it is all just speculation in the first place...
