the title really says it all, i'm interested in hearing your thoughts.
Is it moral for a person to be able to legally ask for aid in dying?
This pinto will not be satisfied until he hears your answer
Tricky and touchy subject for many people. For me? Not at all.
If I were 90 years old and had a life threatening disease and couldn't get around or do anything and was pretty much useless to everything and everyone, I would say, yes it would be my choice to ask for help dying. Whether it is moral or not depends on what your morals are, as everyone has their own personal morals that they go by. What could be right for me might not be good for you and vice versa.
That's me thinking out my ass.
Suicide is suicide, whether it be self-inflicted or assisted. It's the same thing. You are killing yourself before you life has ended naturally.
whats ethical for one person/society may not be ethical for another is how i see it
OK so we can have a doctor assist in the killing of a criminal and we can have doctor assist in the termination of a fetus... heck we can even have a doctor pull the plug on a person in a vegetative state but a person who is suffering and in pain???
Nope... They Have To Be Force To Live!!
This isn't even a morality issue it a feel good about yourself after the deed is done issue... which is selfish on our part.
Just Give Em their last wish!!
I remember posting this topic a long time ago.
I am a firm believer in assisted suicide . I feel it is perfectly ethical.
One should have the right to opt for another way to end his or her life that would eliminate suffering for instance if someone was terminally ill. I mean who wants to be hooked up to tubes and machines? Having someone who is qualified would make it easier also rather than say doing it yourself and botching it. When one no longer has quality of life why drag it out.
We make these choices for our animals everyday because we feel they should not suffer or if they no longer have the quality of life, or even for financial reasons...we feel noble for it...and think nothing of it. Why then cannot we make these decisions for ourselves, why just sit back and watch a loved one suffer for long periods , or be the one yourself suffering.
Another way of looking at this is:
Those in long term terminal care use a lot of drugs. Hospitals are getting their cut too. So why would these people want you to have that option? Claiming it is morally or ethically wrong only plants the seeds of doubt about something that should be the ultimate personal choice.
So then what about the ones doing the assisting? I do not feel it is murder when it would be the choice of the person making the decision.
Usually a person's reaction to those suffering is to go ahead and end their lives so they don't have to go on suffering even more.
I guess people hang onto hopes that some "miracle" will happen so they have a chance or at least a fighting chance to come out of their state, but I believe there's a few factors that come into play such as....not able to afford keeping them alive etc.
If there's absolutely no chance at all for survival, why prolong the inevitable?
if someone helps in someones elses death i dont see that as suicide. that is tech. murder i dont care if the person asked for it either way you look at it , it is still wrong
morals and ethics really are up to every individual, it's a personal opinion. mine is i think assisted suicide shouldn't even be called that . if your are terminally ill and want to die it should be your right to do so. It's your life. You do have to think of those in your life as well and how it would impacted them but in the end it is up to the person.
just my thoughts
Agree that this is up to the actual person. It's a very individual and personal thing....and who's to say what goes through a persons mind when they are suffering through the end stages of life. I feel that their wishes should be upheld. Is it ethical though...again I think that is open for interpretation, as everyone has a different idea of what the definition of "ethics" is.

Although an interesting topic, this really has nothing to do with the topics discussed in this section and walks a fine line through political and religious/moral debate.
This would be better suited for your journal.
