It's not a real person, as far as I know, but an acceptance of the Night being a parental style influence, or holding that position of consideration in our minds.

It's a saying used by people who identify with the Nighttime, as a form of reverence for it.


To the others, I disagree, for the reasons I've given above.

This has a potential to be a good discussion so I will give this thread a chance.

I too have a similar view to Stabb's of what this represents.

However should the thread turn into "I don't know, but I want to know" answers and not a discussion it will be closed.

So this is sort of the same concept as Mother Earth? Hmm...that is interesting. I've heard of a woman who spreads her dark cloak and brings night to all of us but I haven't really gotten to much into the mythology...

I've noticed that I don't see as many "male" figures if you know what I mean. It's usually more centered around the female aspect. I suppose people do feel really connected to that motherly quality. It comforts us and makes us feel more at home and more protected.
while we're on the subject, I'd like to hear more about male figures in mythology, or maybe I should just make a new thread...blah.

I think to everyone she is something diffrent... to thyoughs who fear the night she is something to run from and hope dosn't come to close to you..... to thoughs who chose to embrase the night and all its beauty she is a beautiful goddess... though either way she is powerful and can chose to hide things or make them stand out she has the ability to protect you or to trap you and is not someone you want to turn your back to

I see the various dark matriarch images of legend being little more than personifications of this one aspect, used in explaining the nature of the universe to prehistorical humanity.

Many cultures place a value on the Mother figure, some even descending the right of royalty via the female line.

Each time a figure within the community came close to embodying the idea of the Mother of Night, they are graced by peoples need to have icons, upon whom they can depend to fulfill a certain role.

Possibly there could well have been living people in unknown history, who may have had this identity thrust upon them, or, inherited as in certain reincarnation theories.

I beleive actually she was second, not really mother of the night but second after the Father, the one who is the source the origine of the vampries, she was chosen by him then he helped her evovle into her vampire mind and soul, into her true form as his partner and companion. This is my two cents.

i used to believe she is the one who proctect us during the night like the mother earth sort to speak. but yet again depends on the culture. some say she is evil and a destroyer others say who takes care of us during the night. that is the beauty of cultures ...

That is interesting MissDevilLove, you're right that a lot of different cultures view such things in very different ways.

I think it is interesting to see how one culture will view the night as a blessed time, sacred to all living things and another culture will view it as the time that evil creatures come out and prey upon humans and all of that stuff.

I think the best is once again, the happy medium. Night time is both beautiful and dangerous, we are not in our element at night, though we can survive....That level of mystery is what I think fascinates us, if you can't see that well in the dark, but only slight shadows and outlines of things you are curious as to what is really out there...

Well of course there are two sides to every mother...two general sides...I mean there are more than two sides but yeah..

People USUALLY divide aspects of the "Mother" figure into two groups, the comforting protector, and the dangerous and deadly force that can affect us all.

To me a prime example of what I'm talking about is the goddess Kali. Some people depict her as an evil demonic figure but to me she is a great example of a motherly figure.
She is protective and loving to those she holds dear, yet she will destroy anyone who challenges her.
She is a creator and a destroyer at the same time.

I was speaking more about the cultures that take either of those aspects to the extreme...If you get what I mean.

Kali is a great example. Others include The thriple Goddess Maub/Morrigan/Macha and the Goddess Hecate. There are many others through out history and myth. Many seem to be associated with the power of Magick as well.

the mother of night has many incarnations and has appeared in many civilizations as the persona of the night sky and all the starry host is wrapped into the folds of her dress and in her hair.

my favorite thus far is the goddes Nyx of the greek mythos. Nyx was the first born of the gods to come out of chaos. From her the night and the stars were born. and eventually, she brought about daylight and life into the world. many of the other popular gods can be traced back in lineage to her form.

to me, the night goddess represents the blanket veil of night, the time of the 'day' that i feel the most alive. she is in the energy of the night and her presence is felt heavily in the places where there is no manmade light.

the glorious night was one of my first beloved studies into the occult and the gods and goddesses. i still hold her in high regard.

The Night Mother is an Archtype, essentially. Multitudes of aspects, from all across the globe. I've always spent my waking moments at night. I've felt the heavy hand of death time and again, most notably at night. I've known the desolate feeling of loneliness at night, and the comfort of the humid darkness.

There are typically two sides of the Night Mother, the protector, which brings comfort and calmness, and the destroyer which brings fear and chaos. I've known both aspects because of the service I've lead. And just as the sea has both aspects, I trust the Night Mother has cause and reason to be as she is, all on her own.

Depending on the culture of your belief you will see it differently. I have to agree with a lot of you on this. Its all in what you truly believe.
It is strange though, that there are not a lot references to the "Male" aspect of things. You always hear about the "Female" presence.

Stabb, I agree with your assessment. many of the older gods and goddesses were archetypes and beings that were chosen to represent the different aspects of the world that mankind had yet to understand.

The mother of night, the night goddess, indeed was the personification of the protectoress and also was the personification of wrath and fear. She was the archetype of the feeling you get when you walk at night and for some of us, who believe her to be so, she is the protecting veil that shrouds us in the night. While I am far from superstitious, the gods and goddesses of old are great archetypes to call upon in spellwork. Because they are such old archetypes, they contain a great sympathetic link to the actual forces being called into play.

In all of my research I have not come across anything regarding a Mother of Night. Maybe in the Hollywood portrayals, Akasha would be what you are looking for. But, a true Mother of Night, is not something I have found to exist.

I agree with Stabb's assessment of the night's personification as our mother.

I belive that lilith is the queen of the night, but because some religions make her look bad that is whats thought of her... But i think that is wrong to think...

Suppose it really does rely on where your from and what culture you belong too for I have no idea which mother you are talking about! theres Brigid,Lilith,Morrigan,Mother Earth, Hecate, Bastet...etc...

Personally, in Chile there're no pages talking about the Mother of Night. Maybe because it's a very religious catholic country. But I've found some pages with Greek myths and also Akasha as part of the vampire history.
