I read runic cards on a regular basis, and am most of the way throug sorting out a set of Runes out of oak I picked up from Tewkesbury last year.

I find them very effective, but like anything else it is each to there own.

I am familiar with the concept of using them for magical casting, but have never experimented with it!

Do a wiki search, and then pick up the Norse Magick book by DJ Conway. That has the majority of info on it,

There are so many facets to learning them -- you would be cross-referencing quite a bit before making headway. Plan an approach (do you just want to be able to translate or use them?) to which civilizations/eras you want to start with.

Odin learned the power of the runes through visions whilst hanging upside down from the world tree Yggdrasil. the commonly used Futhark runes made popular by those fun lovin vikings evolved from the earlier Etruscan alphabet. they are partly heiroglyphic and each rune can mean a letter or an entire word. the ability to leave a message carved onto a tree or rock for someone else to find and understand at another time was a powerful thing in those days, which would shape man's destiny, so it is no wonder that they would be regarded as magic. small wonder that eventually they would be used for divination or even for cursing ones enemies.

Here is a JPEG of some Nordic Runes, Witches Runes (Theban alphabet) and the Irish Ogham (Druid's alphabet). The other ons portrayed were often used by magicians - I think. There is a good description of these alphabets in Raymond Buckland's Handbook of Witchcraft - often referred to as the blue book.

Without knowing much about the history of runes at the time, I was surprised to find that I was very comfortable in using a set a friend had made.

That was a long time ago, but think I may take them up again....I was born and bred in a place called the Isle Of Man which has a long history associated with vikings etc.
