To most people, the old Nameless Art, or the Traditional Magic of British witchcraft, seems mysterious and supernatural. However, magic spells are something quite different and perhaps unexpected. To the Crafter, or Traditional Witch, magic is the utilization of the forces of Nature, forces of the First Cause/the gods/God, in the change of present reality as reflected in the goals intended by the Trad Witch. Thus, magical spellwork is a divine act, that fosters change in the individual, family, friends, others, or the community.
Thus, when seen in this light, magic is not "supernatural" because it works within the physical world, within Nature, within the laws of physics. For if the universe exists because of the gods or God, then that which is created is natural and within Nature.
It is true that at this time it is not scientifically fully understood how magic works, although some believe it may be explained by some theories in quantum psychics. Though one day it will be better and more completely understood, today's lack of a clear scientific understanding does not make magic supernatural; it only means that magic is a phenomenon that is not presently understood by provable theory.
Traditional Magic is the indigenous magical tradition of the British peoples, and the type of magic practiced by Traditional Witches. Magic is seen as a vehicle to access the energies of Nature. Magic is based on the belief that Nature proceeds in orderly sequences of events and these events can be known. With this information, one can influence control or influence energy in such a way as to effect and alter outcome. This is the very basis of magic.
The Crafter Goes Within, which are meditative techniques and visualization in the old manner, to focus the mind, collect energy, and send it to its destination. The use of spellworkings is a natural aspect of working within one's environment, and an aspect of Nature.
The practice of Traditional Magic is direct, practical, simple, and often spontaneous. Magic spells are usually not elaborate, are usually not planned ahead of time, and are not especially ceremonial. Of course, there are variations between traditions, or Trads, but the clear predisposition is toward simplification and directness. If ritual tools are used, if any, are also minimal. For the only two things that are essential for a any good spellworking are the Crafter, or Trad Witch, and the Crafter's mind.
Secrecy, Propriety, & Discretion
Spells and rituals are considered highly private and are usually a family or Trad trust. They are usually not shared outside a family or group, except for a highly selected seeker that is brought into the group or family.
Some Trads require an oath of secracy at the time of dedication. When secrecy is required it is held as a sacred responsibility. In a household or Trad, nothing is deemed to be more important than to maintain secrecy against outsiders. Children are usually taught at a very young age to be highly suspicious of all outsiders and never to speak about the family or Trad, or to speak of family or Trad affairs under any circumstances.
Even when there is no oath of secracy in a Trad or if you are a solitary Crafter or a solo seeker: a high level of discretion is wise. Being a Crafter is not about seeking attention. Generally speaking, we do not dress differently than other people. We do not discuss our spiritual beliefs or thoughts about the Craft to people on the street or even to casual friends .and we do not believe in allowing outsiders to know we are in the Craft. Trust must be hard earned, and never simply given away.
In conclusion: The use of Traditional Magic can be a force of immense good in our lives. It is important to learn how to use magic correctly. Just like learning to play the piano or any other valued discipline, mastery requires patience and dedication, but most importantly, good training and practice.
