Pouring rain this morning, not my lucky day.
Yesterday I forgot to have my husband take the trash, today it was raining too hard when he left.
Maybe tomorrow.
My husband bought an old tractor over the weekend. I am so glad he has something to keep us home on the weekends.
I recently started introducing actual literature to the little kid, in hopes of inspiring an interest in reading on her own. We are reading a chapter or two of Dr Dolittle on the nights she is with me and, it seems to be working.
Last night she was looking at my notepad and was trying to decipher my notes. Actively identifying letters and decoding the words, including words partially written in cursive.
She was really tickled about the cursive letters.
I am really happy she can identify Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, in audio as well as text. She doesn't know the meanings of the words or letters but she knows the symbols are words and knows the difference between the three. She rarely mistakes one for the others. Maybe because she grew up hearing all three plus English.
Now if only I could get her to read subtitles. One of her favorite channels is A Chick Called Albert. The guy uses text in between videos, like in silent movies, to narrate his adventures. It is great practice but I still end up reading most of it.
Yesterday I got a phone call from my daughter.
"We were doing the mid unit math review and there was a weird subtraction question. It wanted her to add."
"Yes, I told you they were doing this."
I don't think she understood when I told her before but now she got it. She had emailed the homeroom teacher about it and apparently she was not the only one.
I told her it was like telling all these 6 year olds that up is up and down is down but you can also look up by looking down. It is too abstract.
Today in 1st grade math.
Your parents and grandparents learned to subtract by taking one number from another number but today you will learn to subtract by adding an unknown number to a known number.
It is just another way of subtracting.
Last week I saw first hand the effects of a person in authority handing out misinformation.
Unit 1 of 1st grade math involved learning the terminology in a story problem that explains whether the problem is addition or subtraction. The week before testing, the math teacher allowed 1 student to identify a subtraction problem as an addition problem and no matter what I did to counter it my granddaughter struggled with similar questions. Not all subtraction, just the ones that went 3+_=8.
The correct way to find a mystery number in a story problem is subtraction. All problems that followed this formula she got wrong because logically she knew the answer was supposed to be lower than 8 but no longer trusted the process she had been taught and instead would just give the lower number in the equation as the answer.
Now she is in an extra math class.
My husband has found several goat costumes that would work great.
Halloween coming up.
Last year grandkid wanted to be her favorite chicken.
This year she wants to be her favorite goat.
My challenge is to find or figure out a goat mask so we don't end up explaining it all night.
Had this laptop for over a year and just discovered it backlights the keyboard.
This is what happens when you buy a tool because you are in a rush to use it.
A month ago my grandkid was playing with the remote and set the Samsung tv on a channel that just shows panoramic scapes. Best screen saver.
