Prologue – The Song Beneath the World
Before the first dawn broke upon the mountains,
before the seas learned the taste of the shore,
the Earth sang.
It was not a song of words,
but of stone shifting in the dark,
of molten rivers flowing like blood through unseen veins,
of roots dreaming in the deep.
From that song came the Five—
born not of flesh, but of element and will.
Earthgrinder, the heart of stone and fire.
Skyveil, the breath of storms.
Tidebearer, the spine of the ocean.
Rootmother, the keeper of green and soil.
Flamewrought, the ember that shapes mountains.
They swore a pact in the age before memory:
to guard the balance between the surface and the depths,
to keep the Earth’s song unbroken.
But songs can falter.
And when the discord comes,
when the Hollowborn rise from greed’s shadow,
the Five will awaken.
The ground will shake.
The skies will roar.
The seas will churn.
The forests will bind.
The mountains will burn.
And the Earth will sing again.
Chapter I – The Heart of Stone
Before rivers carved their winding paths and before the first tree dared to reach toward the sun, the Earth was young and restless. Its skin was raw, its bones unformed, and its heart beat with molten fire. In those days, the world sang—not with voices, but with the deep, resonant hum of stone shifting, oceans forming, and mountains rising.
From that song, in the deepest chamber of the planet, Earthgrinder was born.
It was not a creature in the way mortals understood. It had no flesh, no blood. Its body was a fortress of obsidian plates, each etched with veins of gold that glowed faintly in the dark. Beneath that armor, magma flowed like lifeblood, pulsing in rhythm with the Earth’s own heartbeat. Its eyes were twin embers, bright enough to pierce the blackness of the underworld.
Earthgrinder’s first breath was a rumble that shook the newborn mountains. Its first step carved valleys in the stone. It was the Earth’s will given form—a guardian tasked with shaping and protecting the balance between the surface and the depths.
For centuries, Earthgrinder roamed the underworld. It sealed fissures where molten rivers threatened to spill too soon, sculpted the foundations of mountains so they would stand for ages, and smoothed the jagged scars left by the planet’s violent birth. It moved slowly, with the patience of eons, yet every action carried the weight of purpose.
The surface world began to stir. Rain fell, oceans swelled, and life took root. Earthgrinder watched from below, sensing the delicate harmony between the living world above and the molten heart below. It knew that if either faltered, the other would crumble.
But even guardians grow weary.
After countless ages of labor, Earthgrinder descended into a cavern so vast it could cradle continents. The walls shimmered with crystals formed from the Earth’s tears, and the floor was warm with the breath of magma rivers. There, it curled into the stone, its glowing heart dimming to a slow ember. The Earth’s song lulled it into slumber, and for millennia, it slept—listening, always listening, to the steady pulse of the planet.
Above, the world changed. Mountains eroded, forests spread and burned, oceans shifted their borders. Civilizations rose from dust and returned to it. Yet Earthgrinder remained still, hidden in the dark, waiting for the day when the song would falter and the balance would break.
