Most will immediately think of Optimus Prime. That unmistakable voice carrying all the weight, patience, strength and quiet authority of a character that became larger than the cartoon he came from. Generations grew up hearing it. Kids became adults, those adults had kids of their own, and somehow that voice remained.

For me, though, there is something particularly fitting about remembering Eeyore too.

Such a simple character. Quiet. Melancholy. Usually standing a little apart from everyone else and never expecting much attention. Yet he was always there. And beneath all that gloom there was warmth, loyalty and a strange sort of endurance. He didn't need to be the loudest character in the Hundred Acre Wood to matter.

Maybe that is why one little line feels heavier today than it ever had any reason to before.

"Thanks for noticin' me."

Funny how childhood voices become landmarks without us realizing it.

We don't wake up one morning and decide that a particular voice, character, song or story is going to become part of the architecture of our memories. It simply happens. Years pile upon years. Life changes. People come and go. Childhood disappears somewhere behind us.

Then one day a familiar voice goes silent.

And suddenly you realize just how long it had been there.

Peter Cullen gave life to characters that will continue speaking long after today. Somewhere a kid will discover Optimus Prime for the first time. Somewhere else Eeyore will be sitting beneath his little rain cloud, quietly wondering where everyone went. They won't necessarily know the man standing behind the microphone.

But they'll know the voice.

Those of us who grew up with it will remember.

Thank you for the stories.

Thank you for the memories.

And, Peter...

Thanks for letting us notice you.

Eeyore, is who I think of first. I love Eeyore... it's a sad day indeed.

| AND NOW HIS WATCH IS ENDED |

There are some men who spend their lives avoiding the dark. Others learn how to stand within it. And a rare few teach it how to smile. Tim Curry was one of those.

News came yesterday that he had passed, and I found myself thinking less about death than about the strange permanence some people leave behind. The body eventually obeys the same law imposed upon all living things. Time collects what it is owed. But presence is another matter entirely. Some voices linger. Some faces remain waiting in forgotten corners of memory. Some shadows refuse to leave when the candle goes out.

I remember Darkness. Not merely the creature beneath those magnificent horns, but the presence behind him. That enormous red figure standing against fire and shadow, speaking with the confidence of something that had existed before men invented words for fear. There was elegance there. Intelligence. Humor beneath the menace. Curry didn't simply play Darkness as some snarling beast. He gave him personality. Pride. Wit. Temptation. The monster did not merely frighten you. He invited you into his world and seemed genuinely amused that you had wandered there.

Then there was Pennywise. A different darkness entirely. No throne. No grandeur. No magnificent horns. Only a painted smile beneath a quiet street and the uncomfortable realization that sometimes monsters do not need to chase you. Sometimes they simply wait.

Curry understood monsters. Perhaps that is what I appreciated most. He understood that darkness need not constantly announce itself. It could laugh. It could charm. It could be ridiculous one moment and horrifying the next. It could invite you closer rather than drag you screaming into the night. That is a far older kind of monster. And a far more interesting one.

There were countless other characters, of course. Strange men, villains, fools, pirates and voices scattered across decades. Yet somehow, regardless of costume, there was always something unmistakably his beneath them. A presence. Those are rare. The world has no shortage of performers. Presence cannot be taught so easily.

Now another familiar voice has fallen silent. I suppose that happens more frequently as the years accumulate behind us. Names once thought permanent begin appearing beside dates. Faces belonging to childhood and younger years slowly disappear beyond a door none of us have yet opened. It would be easy to mourn that. I think I would rather remember.

Because somewhere tonight a television will flicker in a darkened room and Darkness will step from the shadows again. A clown will smile from beneath the street. A mansion will fill with murder and laughter. A pirate will sail again. And someone who never knew Tim Curry while he lived will meet him for the first time.

Perhaps that is the closest thing mortals ever achieve to defeating death. The man passes beyond the veil, yet the things he gave life to remain behind. Somewhere Darkness is still standing beneath those great black horns, smiling down upon the pieces before him as though the outcome was decided long before anyone thought to make the first move.

The man has gone.

The monsters remain.

Sleep well, Tim Curry. You gave the darkness a voice.

It will remember yours.
