I went to the Fertility specialist yesterday.
I am the kind of person that likes to come prepared for doctor's appointments. So, the previous week, I have gotten my mother's medical history and all the women on my mother's side history.
I sat down and wrote down my medical history and what I felt was the reasons. Here is what I found:
I found that the pituitary gland is the gland in the body that tends to control all your hormones. It works with your ovaries, by regulating the sexual hormones that you need, to get pregnant and to carry a baby to term. But it works several others ways I found.
I was started on birth control pills, when I was 14. The cramping would keep me out of school for days at a time and this was suppose to help ease the cramping. My understanding is that Birth Control drugs are a small dose of estrogen. When your pituitary gland sees the estrogen it decreases its secretion of FSH and LH, preventing ovulation. Well when I came off birth control, I don't think my pituitary gland ever started producing that again.
But...the birth control pills also effected my thyroid, that is also controlled by the pituitary gland. Within 45 days of starting the birth control, I gained 30lbs. My doctor said my thyroid was low but I was too young to be put on meds. And my metabolism and my adrenal glands, which causes me to have low blood pressure, fatigue, weight gain, impaired thinking and salt imbalanaces. All due to the birth control pills, my doctor says.
So, when the doctor came in, he was very jovial and listened attentively. I explained the problems that I have, the MS, the MTHFR that causes my blood to thicken and the lack of ovulation.
I waited. I waited to be told that I was too old, too fat, that I shouldn't get pregnant with my medical problems. I waited to be told basically, "No."
He smiled, patted my hand. Said he wanted to do two tests. An FSH test, to make sure that I still have healthy viable eggs, which he assumes I do, due to me not ovulating for so long and the fact that I am not showing any symptoms that indicate early menopause. He also wants to do a progesterone, which will indicate if I am ovulating or not.
He said if the FSH says I have viable eggs and the progesterone says I'm not ovulating, he will give me clomid, to kick start the ovulation process again. He warned me of twins. I laughed, explaining that I carry the gene for twins and murphy's law says, of course I will get pregnant with them.
His concern about the MS, is that he has never had a patient, that had MS. I told him that 99% of the time, pregnancy is a cure for MS. Most the times the symptoms will abade, until about 6 months, after the birth of the child, when a major "attack" will be had.
He said that he would check with some of the neurologists that he knows, to see if any of them have dealt with this before.
The MTHFR, is a gene that they found within me, that causes blood clots. My mother has blood clots and my grandmother died of them. The danger in having a child, is with pregnancy, your blood thickens. The most dangerous time is during birth, where clots are going to be more prevalant.
This doctor, was so sweet. He didn't seem worried and said that with the patient being so informed of the dangers, makes his job easier. He asked me, how I would feel about starting in late spring, to actively try to get pregnant. I almost started crying.
So, they took blood for the FSH test to check my eggs and on March 7th, I will have to go in, for the progesterone test to check my ovulation. After the results for that come back, the doctor will write a RX for what supplements and prescriptions he believes I need to be on and we will be off and running.
This doctor did one thing for me.....he gave me hope. Keep your fingers crossed.
