As I look at the picture above I can't help but feel nostalgic. It was taken on our last Christmas together after he'd already been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, and just as it brings me to tears, it also brings back so many memories.
My Granddaddy was the closest person I ever had to a decent father. The epitome of a true southern gentleman, he was strong, hard working, family devoted, mild mannered, and always had a keen sense of right and wrong.
He was married to my Grandmother for 52 years, was an Army veteran in which he served in the Korean war, and after leaving the Army worked at the Naval shipyard until he retired.
His favorite past time was carpentry. I'm convinced that he could have built anything and I still have many things that he built for me. His work shop was the best place to be on a warm spring day and it made me feel so proud that inside he hung my elementary school artwork on the walls.
One of my fondest memories of him was when I as a young child fell into a ditch, and after seeing me covered in mud his reaction was priceless. Luckily, he took me inside, gave me a bath, and dressed me in clean, dry clothes. I often can still hear his voice echoing, "Goodness gracious alive!"
I still miss my Granddaddy everyday. I miss being able to hug him and the way he always called the women in the family "Doll Baby." I miss his voice and the stern looks he'd give when he knew that you'd done something wrong. Those looks alone were firm but gentle enough to make anyone apologize and correct themself. I even miss the way he always smelled of the outdoors, saw dust, and tobacco.
Even though he's been gone three years now the memories of him will always live in my heart. He is undoubtedly the most wonderful man I've ever known. I love you, Granddaddy.
