In contrast to the stability of complementarity, harmonic entrainment is dynamic and complex. One rhythm source is driving other rhythms in a resonant pattern with itself. The resonant patterns are integers or the driving pulse as shown in Figure #3. The wave forms progress together along the abscissa but their cycles are in different stages of completion. Figure #3 shows that y for each of the wave forms fluctuates between positive and negative values at different frequencies. The relationship between the wave forms needs a more complex equation to describe. Harmonic relationships require much more information to define. Harmonic rhythm patterns are universally present in the natural world as they are in the above example of dance. Two further examples illustrate the dynamism of harmonic patterns.



If we assume the wave forms shown in Figure #3 are sound waves produced by a wind instrument wave a would be the prime tone or frequency with any fingering on the instrument. We will arbitrarily assume this one represents Middle C. If the instrumentalist keeps the same fingering but blows harder into the mouthpiece, the note will jump up one octave to the C above Middle C, the first harmonic. If the musician is able to apply more pressure, the tone will jump to the third harmonic or the G above the previous C. In this example, with no change other than the input of more energy, three states are enfolded in one finger position. The series of harmonics would continue as long as one adds additional energy to the system.



Similar harmonics exist in atomic structure in the electron orbits, or fields. In the 1920s a French graduate student Louis-Victor de Broglie proposed that these orbits were standing waves around the atom's nucleus. He proposed that each orbit radiating from the nucleus is a harmonic of the first orbit. Like the sound waves in the above example, when an atom receives more energy the electrons skip to the next orbit in discrete jumps. Erwin Schrodinger and Werner Heisenberg eventually wrote the equations for these matter waves that now form the basis of quantum physics (Goswami, pp. 31-35).



The harmonics entrained in the above examples are in fixed or standing waves. The wave length is captured in the instrument or around the nucleus of the atom. They are discrete steps. Thus, when energy is withdrawn they return to their previous lower tone or orbit. Harmonics series that appear in dynamically systems like human development or the electrical activity of the brain may be steps in a continuum of change. That is, unlike the previous examples, when a new frequency becomes the higher amplitude driver a new series of harmonics resonate. This may be an adaptive bifurcation that establishes new thoughts and moods, and thus broadens one's character. Conversely, it might also be a shift into more pathological states such as post traumatic stress reactions and perhaps the unfolding of alters in Multiple Personality Disorder.



Such adaptive patterns are present in the human infant along with the synchrony mentioned earlier. Ayensu and Whitefield (1981, p. 153) observe the following:



Within an hour of birth babies flex their limbs and move their heads in approximate time to the rhythm of the human speech they hear around them. If a different language is used the actual movements of the babies alter slightly but the rhythm of their movements changes to match the language that is being spoken...human babies begin learning language -- and with it culture -- from the moment of birth on, and they do so through the rhythms of movement.



Agnew and Brown (1989) propose that these patterns observed in infants compile signals out of the surrounding world. They resonate through this primed synchronization to form the basis of our perceptual/cognitive processes. Thus, harmonics embellish deep structural entrained rhythms as above to produce our understanding and experience of the world. Systems, including human systems, with very high degrees of entrainment may appear chaotic. Thus, like an infant overwhelmed by new stimuli who moves to the rhythm of speech, we may learn under conditions of information overload by reducing the complex harmonic patterns to a lower common denominator -- synchrony. In musical words, we try to find and follow the downbeat.



Harmonic structures are also found organizing mind/body interactions. Barbara Brown (1974) verified harmonic organization in electroencephalograms. She noted that just as with auditory tones, a harmonic series appears above a high amplitude theta wave (4 - 7 Hz.). The first harmonic would be in the alpha range (8- 13 Hz.), the next in beta and so on. Jurgens, Rosler, Henninghausen, and Heil (1995) implicate gamma oscillations in the harmonic series. Besides the harmonics within the brain an interesting entrainment occurs between the mind and body in the perineural cells.



The perineural glial cells that exist in the brain and spinal cord along with the peripheral Schwann cells are of immunological origin. Along with providing nutrition and support for neural cells, the perineural cells form a direct current (DC) electrical system that communicates information throughout the body with considerable sophistication. Becker (1962, 1977) and Pert, Ruff, Weber and Herkenham (1985) have explored the affect the DC current has on healing and regeneration in the body. The current generated by the constant signals of the perineural cells can be measured over the body in the electrodermal response (EDR) and forms the underlying baseline of the EEG. Mark Rider (1992) proposes that we can direct the DC current to areas of the body:



What I suggest here is that conscious mental activity can be used to lower the perineural DC potentials in specific body locations thus allowing healing to occur. (p.153)



Rider's thoughts suggest a harmonic entrainment of bodily processes by the conscious mind. Esoteric traditions also note the ability of the tuned mind to entrain energy in the body, as A.A. Bailey (1979, p.568) writes, "energy follows thought." It would appear that by imagery and directed thought energy changes do occur throughout the body.



Entrainment as discussed thus far relates to the communication and creativity in and between various subsets of the mind and body. Harmonic, complementary and synchronous relationships pervade the natural world. We observe them in the biological, physical, physiological, psychological and social interactions. Entrainment as it might occur with spirit provides a greater challenge. Insights into spiritual processes evade our empirical grasp as we must translate seemingly unrelated or irrelevant information between highly different domains; that is, from spirit to mind to body. Exploration of spiritual entrainment must then continue through metaphors and analogies drawn from the suprasystem as we are able to understand it. In that effort, thus this essay will now extend the notion of order to discuss these highly different domains.



The Fibonacci Spiral



THE SACRED SOUND PRINCIPLE OF RESONANCE

Resonance is the most important principle of sound in any form. It designates the ability of a vibration to reach out through vibrational waves to set off a similar vibration in another body.



Every cell within our body is a sound resonator. It has the capability of responding to any other sound outside of the body. Every organ, in which cells of like vibration have gathered to form that organ, will respond as a group to particular sound vibrations. The various systems in the body will also respond to sound vibrations, as will various emotional, mental and spiritual states of consciousness.



We can stimulate an immense number of sympathetic vibrations within our body and mind by learning to direct and control our voice, and by using certain musical instruments, tones and forms of music. Where there is imbalance, we can use directed sound to bring the imbalance back into its normal parameters.



We have a capability of resonating or responding to all sound vibration - positive or negative. We need to be alert to the sounds around us and to strengthen our energies so that only the beneficial sounds can permeate our individual energy fields.



If understood and used correctly, forced resonance can be used to overcome imbalanced conditions in the body and to force various organs and systems back within their normal parameters - restoring homeostasis. High pitches can be used to shatter negative, limiting energy patterns. They can be used to create an intensity within the individual's energy field that can lead to enrichment.



When sounds are impinged upon the human body, resonance can take either a beneficial or detrimental effect. The human body is bio-electrical. Our auric fields are electro-magnetic energy fields surrounding the physical body. We are constantly giving off (electrical aspect) and absorbing (magnetic aspect) energy. Every time we interact with another person, there is an exchange of energy vibrations. If we are around many people throughout the day, we may accumulate a tremendous amount of energy debris. Unless we learn to recognize this and cleanse our fields of it, we can end up with physical, emotional, mental and spiritual problems.



Part of the secret power of the Word involves learning to control and direct our resonance with other energies. We must develop the ability to discriminate among energies. We must learn to use specific techniques to keep our energies vibrant, strong and resonant so that we only respond to that which we desire and direct.



SACRED SOUND PRINCIPLES OF RHYTHM, MELODY AND HARMONY



Chants, mantras, prayers, songs, stories, music and speech must employ rhythm, melody and harmony to achieve union of body, mind and spirit.



Three numerologically is the great creative number. To this is the three-fold song.



Rhythm - from which comes all motion in the universe.



Melody - from which comes the interaction between the

divine in the physical and our own interactions with other life forms.



Harmony - from which comes the true spiritual power

manifesting in the universe and in humans as our interaction

with all elements of life are harmonized.



Rhythm is the pulse of life and its affects all physical conditions. Rhythm can be used to restore the normal, healthy pulse within a person. Being exposed to regular steady rhythm triggers a resonance with the body's own natural rhythms. The rhythms outside of us can trigger a forced resonance and entrainment of our inner rhythms. This has both beneficial and detrimental applications.



Some rhythms are abnormal and create problems. They can overstimulate the inner pulse. They can force the normal heart rhythm into one that is counter to a healthy pulse within the body. One such rhythm is anapestic. This was a rhythm used by the Rolling Stones in some of the earlier music of the sixties. It is also a rhythm employed by some modern punk and heavy metal rock and roll bands. Some individuals experienced breathing and heart arrhythmias linked to the music.

The normal heartbeat follows a pattern of "Da-da Da-da Da-da" An anapestic rhythm sets up a heart rhythm of "da-da-Da da-da-Da." This can affect all of the internal body functions.



Steady, directed rhythms restore the body's rhythms when they are out of balance. Individuals with heart conditions can benefit strongly from listening to Baroque music. This form of classical music has a rhythm that is soothing and healing to the pulsations of the heart. It is a form of music being used more commonly now in cardiac surgery. Its rhythms promote healing and strengthening of the heart.

Drum and knocking patterns exist for the emotions and for exploration of inner consciousness. Many shamanic practices involve using the drumbeat to induce an altered state of consciousness and even a trance condition. In shamanism, the drum establishes a kind of bridge enabling the shaman to connect to a magical state of consciousness.



In healing practices, rhythm (whether expressed through drums, rattles, bells or gongs) can energize and stimulate our basic primal energies. Rhythms - especially through percussion instruments - activate the spleen and base chakra centers of the body. These centers are linked to the functions of the circulatory system, the adrenals, and our basic life force.



Rhythms stimulate physical energy. Drumming can be a means of increasing blood flow throughout the body. The rhythms can quicken or slow the heartbeat and all organs associated with it.

The rattle is one of the oldest healing instruments and is part of the percussion family. It's healing aspects are often ignored except those who are interested in Shamanism or traditional native healing processes.



The rattle and its rhythms have a capacity for linking the waking consciousness to the energies of the cosmos, or to levels of consciousness deep within. The inner levels of consciousness serve to release greater energy and power for the cleansing and healing process. The rattle is a cleansing instrument.



We are a bio-chemical/electro-magnetic energy system. As noted above, our thoughts and emotions trigger various frequencies of electro-magnetic impulses which interact with our bio-chemistry. Negative thoughts and emotions will set up a rigid energy pattern within the auric fields. These patterns are deviations from our true energy patterns and frequencies. When the negative patterns predominate - they will impinge upon our individual energies and can bring us into resonance with them. If allowed to continue, they will distort our basic life flow and we become more susceptible to illness.



FREQUENCIES OF THE BODY AND THE PLANETS



These negative energy patterns usually lodge within the etheric body and within the chakra centers. If this static and negative energy debris is not cleaned out, any energy flowing to and through the physical body becomes sullied.



The rattle is a rhythmic instrument that can shake loose any energy debris that has settled within our natural filters and mediators. It shakes loose the negative energy patterns so they can be more easily cleansed from our entire energy field.



The process is simple. The rattle is shaken while encircling the body. The rhythmic sounds of the rattle serve to loose the rigid energy patterns that have accumulated within the etheric body. The rattle is then shaken while moving it up and down the central meridian of the body - usually front and back. This loosens up the energy debris that has attached itself and accumulated around or in the chakra centers. Some healers pause to give extra 'shakes' at each chakra as these are places in the body in which there is a great degree of electro-magnetic activity. Once this negative energy pattern is loosened, it allows for easier cleansing of the negative energies .







Logarithmic characteristics can be found in architecture, nature, biology, and music (just to name a few). If you know how to look for it, you can find it. One logarithmic quality of great importance is the Fibonacci sequence. Once you understand this sequence, you will begin to understand the true healing potential of sound.



Leonardo Fibonacci (alias Leonardo of Pisa) was a mathematician born around 800 years ago back in medieval times (1175AD). He noticed that all plants grow in a certain way. A plant will grow one leaf, and then it will grow one more. In order to do that, it simply adds what it just grew to where it is now to determine what to grow next. The sequence goes like this: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233... At the 5th leaf (in preparation to grow the next bunch) the plant looks back at what it just grew (3), adds it to where it is now (5) and then grows: 8 more leaves. This is organic structure. Leonardo noticed that the number of petals a plant has directly corresponds to this sequence.



One thing about this Fibonacci sequence is that it creates a curve. The sequence is blended into this curve or spiral. Some Fibonacci spirals are really noticeable. For example, the horn of a ram curls around with the same ratio and so do nautilus shells. Sometimes you'll see spirals going in both directions at once. You can see this on a pine cone or a sunflower. If you count the number of spirals going one way relative to the number of spirals going in the opposite direction, they are going to create the Fibonacci series. An example would be 34 spirals going one way and 55 spirals going the other way. In sunflowers, you will find the ratios 5-8, 8-13...all the way up to 144-233 counter rotating spirals.



So why does the Fibonacci series play an important role in understanding how music effects organic structure? First relate the sequence to music. First we should look at the life of the bee.



Remember hearing about the immaculate conception of Yeshua Ben Joseph (aka Jesus). This "virgin birth" happens frequently in nature. A female bee, for example, can have a male bee anytime by herself -- no male fertilization is needed. If she wants to have a female bee, she has to physically mate with a male. By looking at the family tree (backward) of this male bee that was born from immaculate conception, an interesting thing appears. Remember, a female can make a male bee without mating. A bee to be born as a female needs both a male a female parent.



As you trace back the family tree of this male bee, you will notice the Fibonacci sequence or series. With the series sequence given above, you can easily trace back as far as you want into the male bee's family. All sorts of things do this in nature. If you stop at 13 in the Fibonacci sequence of the bee's family tree, you can directly relate the Fibonacci bee pattern to Sound Harmonics.



If you take a set of piano keys and make the white keys male and the black keys female, look how they line up in the sequence as the chromatic scale (C, C# , D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C).



Removing the white keys gives you the octave scale and removing the black keys gives you the pentatonic scale. This also creates a reversal of the Fibonacci sequence (lower right side). This is a direct right-brained way of showing you that organic structure and sound are harmonically related. This relationship becomes clearer when you introduce the little known knowledge on sacred geometry.



Here's a little taste on what ancient people knew about the Fibonacci sequence. If you apply this logarithmic (fibonacci sequence) spiral to a particular spot on Earth, an interesting thing will happen... all the ancient sacred structures & places (i.e. temples, pyramids) all line up along the spiral. All the sacred sites on this planet are laid out on either Fibonacci or Logarithmic spirals. They are all connected mathematically and arrive back at a particular spot on the planet. You could even calculate where every single sacred site is on the planet from this spot if you knew how to do so. Obviously, the ancient peoples knew something that we don't know. This Fibonacci logarithmic sequence is the key to moving all life up to new levels with sound.



Ancient sound technologies are much different than current sound technologies. Sound based technologies had great sacred geometric characteristics. Geometry is often overlooked in modern sound therapy techniques. This is why ancient-type global broadcasting of sound for healing seems very unknown to most people.



The sound qualities of ancient temples and structures are the tools for global population healing through sound. If you just want to heal a few people rather than billions, then a small room is needed with various sound/electronic/musical devices or whatever. Mass population healing has to involve ancient sound technologies and knowledge.
