So most people know that I am all about mental health, but I figured I should also let people know that I do care about physical health. After all, they go hand-in-hand.
Mental (or emotional) health refers to your overall psychological well-being. Basically, it is the way you feel about yourself, the quality of your relationships, and your ability to manage your feelings/emotions and deal with problems.
Having good mental health does not mean that you have the absence of mental health problems.Basically, having good mental health is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Part of being mentally healthy is being resilient, having a sense of contentment, the ability to laugh and have fun, and having a sense of meaning and purpose. Being mentally healthy also means that you can have a balance between work and play and the ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships. (not perfect relationship mind you.)
These positive characteristics of mental health allow you to participate in life to the fullest extent possible. These positive characteristics also help you cope when faced with life's stresses.
That being said, your body responds to the way you think, feel and act. When you are stressed, anxious or upset, your body tries to tell you that something isn’t right. For example, high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer might develop after a particularly stressful event, such as the death of a loved one. The following can be physical signs that your emotional health is out of balance:
Back pain
Change in appetite
Chest pain
Constipation or diarrhea
Extreme tiredness
General aches and pains
Headaches
High blood pressure
Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
Lightheadedness
Palpitations (the feeling that your heart is racing)
Sexual problems
Shortness of breath
Stiff neck
Upset stomach
Weight gain or loss
Poor emotional health can weaken your body's immune system. Also, when you are mentally off your game (so to speak) you may not take care of your physical health the way you should (eating right, exercising, sleeping right, etc.).
