Divining your true self: Divining 102 - Generalizations just won’t do.

Every one of us has had that moment of recognition (however fleeting) when we feel that there is something else, some kind of energy, magnetism, spirit force, or synchronicity that guides us. There are times when we say to ourselves, "It can't be just a coincidence!" Whether or not we believe that there is divine intelligence, or we believe that it is our inner consciousness that guides us, we find that we can't ignore the idea that there is some kind of mystical, pseudo-GPS system that exists.

Many cultures have recognized this very principle idea and have developed various systems of divination for guidance. People have been known to use tea leaves, tarot cards, totem animals, spirit guides, astrology, chiromancy, just to name a few. Those methods are fine, but they can lead to a very tragic outcome. By relying on methods created by others, you are letting others dictate who you are, and why you do what you do.

There are ancient divination techniques and there is, of course, the study of psychology and sociology that are helpful in coming to generalizations about cause and effect and human behavior, but I cannot stress enough that relying on generalizations to determine who you are and why you do what you do does not do you as an individual any justice whatsoever. The methods that I will begin to teach in this series are very simple and very easy to use. Each person must rely on their own intelligence, listen to their own heart, and make sure to keep their filters on.

It is my personal belief that everyone is different. We each make our own truth, and we are our own truth. So why should we listen to other's derived truths and apply these to ourselves? Your truth will always be different, now all you have to do is find it.

Next week we're going to explore divining techniques and understand the purpose of filters. Stay Tuned!

*Divining your true self is a multi part series that exposes various tools and how to use them to keep centered, focused, and keep your sword sharpened for the next battle. In no way should it be used as a bible, a treatment plan, or a definitive answer guide. These tools should never be used as a substitute for professional help, if professional help is required. It is my personal belief that in this life, everyone's experiences differ, and everyone must find their own path. If you use these or any other tools found in print or personally recommended to you, please keep your "filters" on. Accept and practice what works for you, and reject the rest. That is how you divine your true self.

Divining Your True Self: Divining 101 - The Beginnings

Divining Your True Self: Divining 101 - The Beginnings

Every once in a while we all get a little lost. Perhaps life sends you a series of blows that knock you off your kilter, perhaps you find yourself at the start of a new road in the new year, or perhaps you've just reached a benchmark in your life that leaves your head spinning while you wonder, "what's next?" During these times it can be helpful to take a moment alone with a pen and paper and re-focus.

Who am I? What do I want? Are the things that are important to me, the same things that were always important to me? How have I changed? It can be helpful to write down five or so things that are important to you, and a few sentences after each topic, just to see, on paper, what really matters.

For example, I spent a brief time homeless and found when I finally clawed my way back up the ladder and had an apartment again I felt like everything that had once mattered to me was, in fact, quite trivial. I felt that nothing was as important as it once was, and that I was a completely different person from the person that I remembered I was before the experience.

It was only by writing down what things were important to me (singing, traveling, writing, love, family, etc.) that I realized that my ordeal had not changed me, it had only strengthened me. The things that I loved and the things that were important to me were still right there on the list, just the same as they had always been. Through the exercise of re-writing and re-ordering the list and by taking the time to review the results, I discovered that I was the same person, just a little stronger, and a little more focused for the experience.

Today's tool is: If life knocks you for a loop, take a look at what remains. See that you are constant. Love what you are and what you always have been. Then decide your next steps.

Next week we're going to delve into the different methods of divining those HIDDEN truths. Stay Tuned!

suckity-butt!

I'm not looking for sympathy here, I'm just venting:

The company not paying me for six weeks and then messing up my direct deposit put a ding in my checking account so hard that after what direct deposit I got, I AM STILL $900 in the red. Believe me when I tell you, there was no xmas here. Not on my side anyway. I paid $1500 worth of NSF fees and I can't seem to catch up.

I got the electric paid at the store, that was one of the NSF's. They were gonna cut the power. The liability insurance will be cancelled if I can't pay it by the 7th (and they won't be able to re-insure us at the store if the policy is cancelled for non-payment), and to top things off, rent is due again. In the meantime, I've got internet to pay, and who knows what on the house bills to take care of.

I asked for $165 of the NSF fees to be paid by my employer, and they haven't gotten back to me. My next check, because of the time off from the holidays and the time off I needed to see my brother's wedding will go directly into my bank account and still leave me $300 in the red. Then since I'm still in the red, items will bounce all over again (two, three and even four times each - to the tune of $27 each time!) With all this going on, I'll be back up to $800 or even $1200 in the red before I know it! GAAAAR!

A friend of mine said a powerful thing to me once... (We were talking about the housing market and some close friends and relatives of mine losing just everything.) "Well," she said, "when you've done everything that you can do, then sometimes the thing to do is just be philosophical about it."

So in the interest of all things philosophical:

In the meantime, we have light and heat, I am fed and happy, for now. I realize that sometimes we only use these little trivial things as an excuse to complain, or as an excuse to be non-productive, or as an excuse to be upset, angry, or sad. And then sometimes we just need to vent.

Examining the most likely worst of outcomes: If we have to close the store, for a while, then so be it. Life doesn't end. If we have to live in the wintertime without electric or heat, then so be it. There is kerosine, and labor-ready to fuel us through. Two seemingly able minded able bodied individuals need not worry about this stuff, no matter what happens there will always be other options.

My BFD meter is either terribly skewed, or very finely attuned. I mean, really. There are only two things in this world that could hurt me anymore. Death of someone I love, or death of me. (Well, death of me wouldn't hurt me much except it would leave those I love in a mess, QED, theoretically hurting me. - if I were still around to sense such things.)

Sometimes I just wonder if I am numb, if I am just panicked into a frozen abyss, or if I've just been through so much that all this really is no BFD.

Now I go off to sleep, because unto all else, I must try to tread water, make things better and not lose all that I have gained. Focus and sleep tonight, focus and work tomorrow. And if the car breaks down, there are always bus routes.

This is a test. This is only a test.

Whatever else, whenever else - are naught but minor inconveniences.
