Lone Wolf

He waits alone,
Amidst the cold and snow,
Waiting patiently for that familiar sound.
Where have they gone to..he does not know,
Missing the love,
He once had found.
He heard a voice, that of a man,
Then a loud noise,
And a yelping cry.
The human spoke of a sickening plan,
Of killing- but for what, the wolf knows not why.
Where have his pups gone,
His precious mate.
The Alpha, Omega, and Beta,
All gone still he lets out a mournful howl, Realizing their fates,
As the winter air compounds the night's chill.
He hangs his head low,
His eyes filled with tears,
His howls unanswered.
His heart filled with grief,
He can't understand why his packmates had to die.
He wanders the forest alone,
His head to the ground,
He picks up a familiar scent.
His heart quickens,at the sound of a moan,
There he finds her...
The one for which he is meant.
His mate, hurt and frightened, lifts her head to the sky,
The wolf's heart breaking as he notices her wounds.
Raising her head, her gaze meets his eyes,
The pain in her eyes, reflected by the light of the moon.
Desperate to help,
But not knowing what he can do,
He lays down beside her, and gives her a loving nuzzle.
But, it is too late,
She is already gone.
With a deep breath,
He lifted his head toward the stary night sky,
He howled for the soul of his beloved mate.
But alas, he must move on.
The humans will be on him soon.
So on the lone wolf walked.
To create a new?
To live in solitude?
Who knows...
At the moment lone is all he knows.

Perhaps it was the eyes of the wolf,
measured,calm,knowing.
Perhaps it was the intense sense of family.
After all, wolves mate for life, are loyal partners,
create hunting communities and demonstrate
affectionate patience in pup rearing.
Perhaps it was the rigid hierarchy of the pack.
Each wolf had a place in the whole
and yet retained his individual personality.
Perhaps it was their great,romping,
ridiculous sense of fun.
Perhaps it was some celestial link
with the winter night skies
that prompled the wolf to lay its song on the icy air.
All of these things called to me,
I felt I am one of them and they me,
From that moment I began my transcending.
