Oysters May Be an Aphrodisiac After All
But one expert says their power in the bedroom not proven yet.
By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter (2006)
WEDNESDAY, March 16 (HealthDayNews) -- Throughout the ages, foods such as asparagus, almonds, avocado, bananas, basil, chocolate, eggs, figs, foie gras and, of course, raw oysters have been touted as aphrodisiacs.
But in the age of Viagra, the scientific community considers these claims to be nothing more than wishful thinking. All these foods can be part of a fabulous meal, but the aftereffect is more likely to be weight gain and the need for a nap than a night of rapturous lovemaking.
However, a new study by American and Italian chemists claims that as far as oysters, clams and mussels are concerned, the ancient claim may be true. Their finding was presented March 16 at the American Chemical Society annual meeting in San Diego.
"The supposition for centuries was that oysters, clams and mussels have been thought to have aphrodisiac properties," said researcher George Fisher, a professor of chemistry from Barry University, in Miami Shores, Fla. "And they were eaten raw for that purpose."
Until recently, there was no scientific basis for that belief, Fisher added. But what he and his colleagues have discovered is that mussels, clams and oysters contain compounds that have been shown to be effective in releasing sexual hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. These compounds are D-aspartic acid and NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate).
"We found there might be a scientific basis for the aphrodisiac properties of these mollusks," Fisher said.
Not so fast, says food myth expert Dr. Robert H. Shmerling, an associate professor of medicine from Harvard Medical School. "The findings are certainly interesting, but we still have a ways to go before saying that there is scientific evidence that clams, oysters and scallops boost libido," he said.
Shmerling asks this: When D-aspartic acid and NMDA are digested, do they still lead to sex hormone release? And do they release enough estrogen or testosterone to matter?
"Testosterone is thought to play a more major role in libido in men and women than estrogen alone; in fact, estrogen release could reduce libido in women. And while it's hard to predict what, if anything, mollusk-induced estrogen release would do in men, it probably would not increase sex drive," Shmerling said.
In addition, Shmerling wonders if animal studies linking D-aspartic acid and NMDA to the release of sex hormones is even relevant to humans.
"This is a good example of the headlines getting well ahead of the science," Shmerling said. "It will take much more compelling evidence -- with human subjects -- to prove a link between seafood and libido."
I've been asked do I believe in Miracles or the Supernatural?
Well I would have to say that Nature itself is the only thing that I consider a miracle because humans can not duplicate it. Humans can not produce out of nothing what nature already has. Fire, Air, Water, Rock, Wood, Life etc ...these are what I consider miracles of nature.
As defined in Wikipedia, Nature, in the broadest sense, is equivalent to the natural world, physical world, or material world. "Nature" refers to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. It ranges in scale from the subatomic to the cosmic.
So since at least one of the five Known senses of humans can register the miracles of Nature, nature can never be God.
The Supernatural as defined by Dictionary.com as of pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal; of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or attributed to God or a deity; of, pertaining to, or attributed to ghosts, goblins, or other unearthly beings; eerie; occult.
I would have to say for something to fall in the Supernatural category for me is for either none of my 5 senses being able to registered the existence of it, but by only my faith do I CHOOSE to believe it to exist. Furthermore, if something does make its existence known to me out of nothingness and humans can not reproduce it or create something that can reproduce it, then that too I would consider Supernatural.
I believe since everything has to have an opposite to exist, so to must God. So it is my belief that sense Nature is physical, God must be the great Supernatural Void in which all Miracles spring from.
When ask why do I relate to Goth and Vampires? Well it is my belief that in this life there are POSITIVE experiences and NEGATIVE experiences. One can not exist without the other. It is my personal 'FEELING' that I've had more NEGATIVE experiences experiences than Good ones even though the Negative ones have only made me stronger. Therefore, I better relate to the Darker side of things. The Dark does not mean 'Evil' although 'Evil' uses it more due to the fact it can be hidden better. To me The Dark is what you make of it. To me it means Freedom, Acceptance, Peace, Power, Serenity, Comfort, Love, Rest, Quietness, Hunger, Exotic, the Unknown and the Possible. I equate The Dark with Goth and that is why I love Goth.
There have been so many stories told about the Vampire. The stories have covered the spectrum from Supernatural Beings to just Humans with a rare, but contagious medical condition. To me, being a Vampire simply means someone that has been through much pain during their existence and they are always looking for serenity while having to survive needing others whether they want to believe it or not. Because it is from an external source that they find temporary relief from the eternal pain they feel inside. They derive some level of extreme Pleasure from the external source. In some small way I believe all humans are Vampires.
These are only one man's Beliefs.
I have yet in my life time seen anything Supernatural, but I see Miracles every day. *Cough, Cough, Women, Cough Cough* ;)

Resolution Options
When a conflict occurs, there are three (3) steps in the Informal Resolution System that you can use to reach satisfactory resolution.
History has proven that if a step is skipped, this may result in a marked increase in DRAMA and further CONFLICT and RETALIATION.
(Step 1) DIRECT APPROACH
In person, by approaching the individual(s) involved. First, give yourself time to collect your
thoughts or cool down. Stay focused on the behavior and its impact. Use common courtesy and
ensure your approach is not disrespectful. You may consider writing down your thoughts before
approaching the individual(s) involved. (The comments do not have to be given to the offending
person but can be used as documentation if you have to resort to formal action.)
· In writing, by sending a letter to the offending person stating the facts, your feelings about the behavior, and expected resolution.
(Step 2) INFORMAL THIRD PARTY
· Request assistance from another person. Ask another person to talk with the individuals
involved, accompany you or intervene on your behalf to help resolve the conflict. This will normally
be a friend or co-worker.
(Step 3) TRAINING
· Request training be provided to the offending person which covers expected standards of proper conduct or society etiquette.
So having been in the military for 24 years and seeing how issues can escalate, it's interesting that in a virtual world it continues to play out. I am so amused.
So now when will the council elite come in to make an attempt at mediation and resolve issues or are we headed to armageddon with collateral damage.
Who will show true leadership in these dark times.

So after 24 years in the military where facial hair is not allowed, I finally get to grow some and all I see is the gray of a Distinguished Gentleman.

LOL...It happens to the best of us CM. Well me more than most, but that's another story. :)
People who say they never feel Fear...Lie!
They only control the symptoms brought on by fear better than others. This is called Courage or becoming Numb (Don't Care). Both are a by product of fear which they DO feel.
Everyone feels the rush of Fear. How you handle it is based on the choice you make.
When I have no guns, no bullets, no cross bow, no arrows, no knives, no swords, no hands or legs...Then I will began to get a little concerned about my self-preservation.
I've heard about the Fear of a Broken Heart. A possible broken heart I can deal with. I've yet to hear of anyone literally dying from a broken heart. Either have Courage to Love in the 1st place or Love again after feeling that your heart has been broken or become Numb to Love and never Love or never Love again.
Fear...Feel The Rush!
If you aren't happy being single you will never be happy in a relationship. Get your own life and love it first, then share it.

You ever have that one table you just can't keep yourself from cluttering no matter how hard you try. I mean I just keep laying stuff on it. I'll remove everything off of it, but 15 minutes later, I'm placing something back on it again. LOL!
