Gothic Lolita, also called Gothloli, gosurori, or Loli-Goth is a subcategory of the Lolita fashion. Street fashion among the Japanese teens, it combines Victorian-style, Edwardian and Rococo periods. Imagine a Victorian porcelain doll, with a touch of gothic style. It is usually a combination of black and white, with trimmings of ribbons and lace. Skirts are mostly knee length and may have a petticoat to add volume. Worn over knee socks, stockings or tights are most popular. Child like shoes or Mary Jane shoes are common, but with the gothic style, you see fishnets and boots. Frilly ruffed or lace trimmed Victorian blouses that are very modest, sometimes with long lace capped sleeves fit the style. Mini top hats, parasols, lace headdresses, or bonnets are some of the accessorizes used to complete the image. Along with handbags in odd shapes- like coffins, bats, and hatboxes- pocket watches, gloves, teddy bears and other stuffed animals are more of the props used. The look is cute, beautiful and elegant rather than sexy. Of course, as with any gothic style, the person who is wearing the outfit changes the rules. The loveliest outfits are the ones that have a personal touch of the wearer. Originated in 1998, the popularity of Gothloli as a distinct style peaked by 2005 in Tokyo. Now settled down as an alternative fashion, the websites dedicated to this style are many. Listed below are several, along with a few having sewing patterns for some basic pieces of the style. There are several magazines, as well as comic books for this fashion style. Look closely at the Anime and Manga clothing, and you will see just how much it has influenced the culture. In addition, a wonderful place to get an idea of what the “look” of Gothloli is. The Japanese have a form of rock band called Visual Kei, or visual rock. Bands of various music styles, they feature the use of elaborate costumes, and have influenced the Gothic Lolita fashion style. One person who is credited with having helped establish the style is a man called Mana, a cross dressing former member of a band called Malice Mizer. He coined the terms Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL) and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat (EGA) to describe his fashion label Moi-meme-Moitie. Hope this leads you to another side of the fashion called “Gothic”, and adds ideals for some additions to your wardrobe.
