Robin Hood returns to England from the Crusades. Travelling back to his Manor at Locksley, Robin and manservant Much pause to rescue Alan-a-Dale from having his finger cut off for poaching.

On return to Locksley it becomes clear that all is not well on Robin's lands. Starvation and brutal punishment by authority have taken hold. Villager Dan Scarlett has had his hand cut off whilst protecting his two son's Will and Luke from that fate when caught poaching. When Robin left, The Sheriff of Nottingham was Edward, his sweetheart marian's father. Now there is a new Sheriff, a new regime and Guy of Gisborne has been overseeing Robin's lands to the detriment of Robin's people. Not surprisingly Guy is not one of those celebrating Robin's safe return.

Robin determines to find out what has happened in his absence and visits his old friend Edward. However, neither Edward nor Marian are pleased to see him. Returning to Locksley, Robin discovers Guy hauling off the two Scarlett boys and another villager for stealing flour. Robin travels to Nottingham to intervene on their behalf and is shocked to discover they are to be hung for their crimes, along with Alan-a-Dale who has again been caught up to no good. When his pleas for clemency go unheeded by the Sheriff, Robin must decide - their lives or his position.
