Dungeons and Dragons had always featured undead prominently in their modules and other products, but Ravenloft and Ravenloft II: The House on Gryphon Hill took the concept to new heights. The vampire had become a cliché in many campaigns, and these modules really returned a lot of the atmosphere and sense of true horror that had been missing from the majority of TSR’s published modules.
The original module was written by Tracy & Laura Hickman of Dragonlance fame, who were responsible for elevating Advanced Dungeons and Dragons from a pure hack-and-slash play to a game where storylines and motivations became far more important.
