I have a couple questions. I am kind of curious on what everyone's thoughts are on these two questions...
Does the belief in the after life affect the way people act?
Why is the belief in the after life so strong in some?
Well, I believe that when we die we move onto to either heaven or hell. depending upon our Karma depends on how long our stay is until we are to move on. Once we move on, we are reborn once again to continue the cycle.
Yes but my question is WHY do you believe it? What comfort does that give you? What does that compel you to do? Does it compel you to do good acts or do you just not care? That is what i am asking...What is the importance of the afterlife to us as a society?
why do I believe what I believe? because it makes more sense that something bigger than us exists than just having nothing coming
And does this belief alter how you act? Or would you act the same if you had nothing to believe in?
its not that it makes me feel good, my goal is enlightenment, as is many others. To ascend past this point and be able to control on when I rebirth. It is something that is... part of who I am, it is something that is what I accepted and know within that is how it is for me.
Does the belief in the afterlife affect the way people act?
I think so especially if they have a belief system that deals with punishment. No one is perfect so they may believe in going to a hell. So I would say that fear has a lot to do with how we act. Fear of the unknown mostly. There is always that small voice saying what if.
Why is the belif in the afterlife so strong in some?
Faith probably the biggest reason. For me I have belonged to Near Death organizations and read hundreds of cases. I have listened to Dannion Brinkley speak. So I believe to a degree but others, I think it is upbringing and what their reigious affiliations are. When I say a degree there is always that place in my mind for doubt that there is any afterlife at all. That the near death experience is just the brain winding down in the throes of death. I vasilate from believing to being almost skeptical but that happens when one gets older. I still think its a matter of religious/spiritual faith and if that is strong then your belief will be as well.
It isnt a belief of an supreme being or punishment that compels me to act a certain way.It is the fact that I like others to treat me in a certain manner, therefore ,I need to do the same.Plus,it just feels better .
i agree in that i dont require a supreme being in order to act in a more ethical manner...
but my studies in physics do make me strongly believe that there is one...or more.

My opinion, is because some people can be brain washed more easy then others.
Having thought long and hard about what it is to be a mortal in this mundane realm I have come to the following hypothesis;
1. It is likely boredom and disappointment in fellow man would make longevity unappealing.
2. Higher beings would seek new refreshing lives and thus wipe most memories "to play the game again"
3. their unique abilities would almost certainly leak out.
4.The hidden rules mean they may have devine protection and anger at mistreatment.
tho I believe in 'something', I Now live for today, not an unknowable tomorrow...
I person's belief system does influence their behavior and if that belief system involves a heaven or hell complex then I would say that above all else influences their decisions even if its the most heinous act imaginable. During the crusades for example Catholic priest would tell warriors that if they went to fight in the holy land all their sins would be forgiven and heaven would be theirs so they willingly went and slaughtered enemies women and children alike. Muslim jihadists believe if they die in holy war they go to heaven so the extremists strap bombs to themselves and blow up civilians and their enemy alike. These are negative examples of how a belief system rules a persons decision making.
yes it changes how people act and its so strong because if thhey believe something good will happen to them when they die they want to believe it with all there might
"but my studies in physics do make me strongly believe that there is one...or more."

Ditto LW.
Hmmm interesting question
Gnostics (not to be confused with Agnostics) believe that our lives are planned out with the purposes of advancing our souls. In the end we return to God. Right or wrong we always go home.
I don't know if that's what I believe but it's a nice thought.
Does the belief in the after life affect the way people act?
Absolutely, yes! We see it all the time. Different religions have different belief systems, and that is some of what causes so much pain in this world. Since I am not a religious person, what renders me quizzical is , WHY fight and war about it when the ultimate goal and outcome is basically the same. Ascension to a different existence.......hopefully a better one.
People live their lives in accordance of their beliefs and level of faith.

Why is the belief in the after life so strong in some?
I think ones upbringing, and personality plays a huge part in the level of their faith, as well as the experiences one goes through in life , either proving or disproving in the mind of the individual of what may be on the other side and because of the need to believe is so strong that this existence is not all there is , that physical death is not all that awaits.
i think it has an effect on people in their religious thinkings
i think some have a strong conviction in it because they hope that there is an afterlife and also perhaps they had a near death out of body experience that strengthened their belief in a afterlife
Does the belief in the after life affect the way people act?
I believe it does. We all make our choices, and in the afterlife we are judged accordingly.
Why is the belief in the after life so strong in some?
I believe that it is the way we are raised. Some families instill it very strongly in their kids, where others not so much, and in those families the kids are allowed to make their own choices.
Interesting and strong subject. How can I answer your question without touching religion? Impossible. The after life is the culmination of a long life, being submitted into a believe that after you die, then, life begin. For many, this is paradoxical, because, if that is the case, then, What happen for the non-believer? Don't say "Hell", because, for then, Hell or heaven, is just a creation of some Master mind, to control the masses, and get a good profit, and live a good life; No after dead, but, at present moment.
im honestly happy with the way ive lead my life. im still torn on if there is an afterlife or not, but if there is im certain im going to a good place because of how i was in this life and all
Questions asked:
Does the belief in the after life affect the way people act?
A: Yes it does. People who have a fear of death usually feel lost, or that there's no purpose to life really and live it more depressed and wonder how or why is it that some people have that kind of faith, and they yet have nothing to change their viewpoints or perceptions. It has a huge impact on people as time goes on. Each handles what they are given, in different ways.
Why is the belief in the after life so strong in some?
A: To me, I do not follow the idea of an afterlife based on what religion has taught us, or by word of mouth. My belief in an afterlife stems from experiencing and witnessing many accounts of entities outside of the body. This gives me the perception that we are capable of moving freely outside of our material shells.
I believe it does and actually is a type of behavioural manipulation. After all none that i know who are religious wants to be a damned soul.
And, mainstream religion makes this strong in people
For me its easy, dead is dead, no going to any fluffy paradise, or be reborn, we get one change at it, so make the best of it. Our soul (inner self) will not go to any afterlife. This idea is just used by, especially the monotheistic faiths, to keep men under their control. Be good, live according to their dictates and you will go, after death to paradise, your life will be one misery, but at least, you have the promise of eternal sitting on a cloud. Pity, that the words they speak, don't seem to have any meaning for these religious guys, as usually their own life isn't so nice. Something we can conclude out of the many scandals, in for example the Roman Catholic Church.
Well thanks, if that is our choice, then rather not. I prefer to enjoy my life here, according to my own believes and insights, and we will see what comes. Even if I don't believe (any more) in an afterlife, I know my memories and as such, maybe a part of who I am will remain in the collective unconsciousness, which you can also see as a kind of continuing. At least, for as long as you are remembered, once you are lost in the memories of men, the energy will fade away.
Thats the thing , not many mortals can stand their own demise. You sya "Fade Away"...Listen all the way through...
When you can, you've cracked it...listen to a Matser of the fade away at 23...hats off. He hung himself at his moms house shortly afterwards...23 going on 63...
But see, some of us at least, KNOW there's not a true demise. The body may be short lived but the energy lives on, in everything, in whatever dimensions or planes that already exist and have existed since, oh i don't know forever? But it's obvious there are those here who have yet been given that enlightenment, while some of us already have....and for quite some time, which is why not all of us FEAR the material demise. :)
And some of us feel the age of humans is much like the age of dinosaurs...long overdue.
I believe in a place like summer Land, I think it may make me act the way i do because there one person there waiting for me. My brother Bobby. And i want to go there so i can be reborn again to get my life perfect. So i can finally rest there with Bobby. So yes i think the after life has a big part in why people can change for the better. Because they want to see there loved ones again.
for an eaon the church ... any church, told us we must suffer here, to enjoy the rewards of the afterlife...
that meant... we had something to look forward to...
and, we would endure... serfdom.
more thoughtful Now, we realise that as there's no Afterlife, it's best, to live.. for Today.
